Meyer will be concerned despite Palace appearing to miss out on Fofana

[ad_pod ]

According to Calciomercato, Crystal Palace are set to miss out on Udinese midfielder Seko Fofana.

What’s the deal, then?

The Ivorian is expected to leave the Serie A club in the coming weeks; however the Eagles are supposedly going to lose him to fellow Italian side Atalanta, as per Calciomercato.

Palace and Newcastle were both said to be interested in the 24-year-old, who scored 10 goals in 84 appearances last season after moving from Manchester City.

But it is thought they will not be able to secure the deal as they cannot compete with Atalanta, who surprisingly qualified for the Champions League last season after finishing third in the league – above Roma, Inter and Milan.

And their success has led to them negotiating with the €15m (£13.3m) rated midfielder who is said to have ‘already given his availability to the transfer’.

Palace’s enquiry about Fofana could worry Meyer

Fofana is a box-to-box type midfielder who prides himself on having the engine to win possession back from deep and drive the play forward, contributing in the final third too having picked up four assists and having averaged 1.9 shots and 1.2 key passes in each of his 30 league appearances in 2018/19 – all higher numbers than Meyer’s last term.

Now, given the two systems Roy Hodgson preferred to play last season – 4-3-3 and 4-4-2 – it is clear a player like Fofana is much more suited to those formations than someone like Max Meyer.

The German has largely been a No.10 throughout his career and therefore there isn’t a natural place for him in that role in either of the aforementioned systems.

Are Crystal Palace right to slap a £100m valuation on Wilfried Zaha’s head? Check out the video below to see why they are…

The interest in Fofana must worry him as the Udinese man is a a much more balanced midfielder and is the right fit for how Hodgson wishes to play.

Meyer’s debut campaign in English football certainly didn’t go to plan under Roy Hodgson, with only 15 of his 29 Premier League appearances coming in the starting XI.

He will hope to improve upon that record next term, but the fact that Palace are seemingly actively searching out midfield players more suited to the Eagles than he is must surely be concerning.

Panini Tabloid Sticker Pack – World of Lewis discusses Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was appointed as Manchester United manager in late December.

The former United attacker got off to a flying start, winning his first six games in charge and collecting January’s Manager of the Month award.

The Norwegian also masterminded a Champions League win over PSG, but once he was named permanent manager in March results declined and United finished sixth, losing their final home game 2-0 to already relegated Cardiff City.

The World of Lewis, who can be seen in the video above filling out his Panini Tabloid, was “Very happy with the appointment of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.”

Everton fans react as Kieran Phillips signs first professional deal

[ad_pod ]

Everton announced on Friday that teenage forward Kieran Phillips has signed his first professional contract with the Merseyside giants.

Phillips, who has penned a one-year deal until the end of the 2019-20 campaign, scored 12 times in 11 appearances in the Under-18 Premier League (North) last term.

In an interview, the 19-year-old revealed that he would be targeting a spot in the club’s double-winning Under-23 side in the new season.

It remains to be seen whether Phillips can become a future first-team star at Goodison Park.

However, the fact that the attacker struck 12 times in just 11 games in the Under-18 Premier League (North) last term shows that he certainly has talent at his disposal, and he’s a player you’d expect Marco Silva to keep a close eye on.

Rangers could be left waiting on a bid for Alfredo Morelos despite Steven Gerrard’s wishes

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard wants any bids for Alfredo Morelos to come well before transfer deadline day, but Jackie McNamara has warned that’s not how it all works, as reported by Football Insider.

What’s the story?

Gerrard spoke about Morelos’ situation earlier this week, refusing to rule out a summer exit for the Colombian but warning any interested parties they better get their bids in quickly, with the club not looking to sell in the last few days of the transfer window.

McNamara though isn’t convinced that’s how it’ll all shake out, believing clubs do their business closer to deadline day for a reason.

Check out some amazing tekkers in the video below…

As quoted by Football Insider, the former Dundee United boss said:

“I listened to his interview about Morelos, about people coming in early if they want him.

“Obviously he’s wanting to deal with that as soon as possible rather than wait until the last minute of the window. Unfortunately, the window doesn’t work like that!

“Everybody does it last minute so the prices aren’t astronomical.

I don’t think he’ll be forced just by money, he’ll have options that he’ll be looking at. Maybe he’s thinking along those lines – if he left, he doesn’t get the other one last minute.

“I can understand why he’s saying if you’re buying him, come do it now but the transfer window doesn’t work like that, unfortunately. I think he’s asking the question if there’s people interested.”

Is he right?

McNamara is certainly bringing a bit of reality to Morelos’ situation at Rangers.

Gerrard has admitted that every player at Ibrox has a price and so if the right bid comes in, even at a complicated time in terms of seeking a replacement, can they afford to turn it down?

It’s true that they are in a strong position when it comes to potential negotiations, with four years left on Morelos’ current deal, but the player has also made it clear as recently as May he is seeking to move to a bigger league.

With Jermain Defoe capably starting matches ahead of the striker in recent months, it would be no use keeping the Colombian on if he both wants away and the right amount of money is on the table, regardless of the timing.

Manchester United must place their faith in Alexis Sanchez

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Amid all the talk about Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku this summer, one man who has seemingly gone under the radar at Old Trafford is Alexis Sanchez. The Chile international was off at the Copa America as he bid to banish memories of a disappointing campaign in Manchester, but is likely to return to the Red Devils after his holiday break.

The 30-year-old hasn’t exactly enjoyed the best of times since his move from Premier League rivals Arsenal, but it appears he may still have a chance to salvage his career. As quoted by Sky Sports, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has thrown an olive branch out to the much-maligned forward and insisted that the £350k-a-week star can still come good.

Check out the below above to see football played as you’ve never seen it before… in a maze!

The Norwegian said: “There’s a top, top player there and if we can get him firing, he can get us 20 goals easily. We know what he’s capable of and we – me with Alexis and the team – have to find a way to get that out of him.

“He’s had such a fantastic time at Arsenal and we want to find him scoring goals at Old Trafford and that can give us an extra boost.”

Stroking his ego

As modern football gets more and more bogged down in the world of tactics and formations, sometimes all a player needs to thrive is an arm around the shoulder and a pat on the back.

Despite being a versatile forward at Arsenal, perhaps the main reason Arsene Wenger was able to get the best out of his mercurial Chilean was through his propensity to stand by his man through thick and thin.

Watch Manchester United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

The Frenchman constantly lauded him as being world-class and showered him with praise, publicly stroking the winger’s ego. It may have been over-the-top, but it certainly did the trick – he smashed in 80 goals in 166 games for the Gunners. At United, there has been no such preferential treatment and he has been lost in the shadows.

If Solskjaer wants to bring about a return to form for Sanchez, then he must treat him like a superstar. Roll out the red carpet, make sure his team recognises him as the side’s greatest attacking threat and simply allow him to express himself. Having him be a part of the “team” does not bring out the best in Sanchez; letting him be the individualistic maverick that he is, is the only way that United will see the 30-year-old get “20 goals easily”.

Leicester will need to overcome prior mistakes with Ayoze Perez signing

[ad_pod ]

Leicester City’s biggest statement this summer will be holding onto Harry Maguire.

The central defender has been embroiled in a transfer saga that at the moment seemingly has no end. Last summer he was the subject of interest from Manchester United but their pursuit a year on hasn’t gone away, seeing a bid of £70m fall short of his valuation.

The Foxes have appeared determined to hold onto a player who appeared 31 times for them in the Premier League last season and it’s not a surprise to see why.

But there resistance may well be broken: a bid worth £80m from United has been accepted, according to The Sun.

This is a player who shone for England at the World Cup in 2018, winning 5.9 aerial duels per game.

Last summer was a colossal one for the 26-year-old but fast forward a year on and Brendan Rodgers’ men are making some huge moves.

What initially started as a quiet window has now sprung into life in devastating fashion.

Their first sign of intent was to sign Ayoze Perez.

Rather out of nowhere he arrived for a fee of £30m, breaking their transfer record by £1m to bring in the Spaniard.

Their next considerable move was signing Youri Tielemans on a permanent basis for £40m, again beating their record just days after it had been broken.

However, it’s highly unlikely there will be too many concerns about the Belgian’s arrival.

After all, he’s already proven himself in the royal blue of Leicester, claiming three goals and four assists during his loan stay with the Midlands outfit in the second half of the 2018/19 season.

He is a mercurial talent who seemingly has the ability to simultaneously pop up with goals, remain a creative force and battle to recover possession.

Perez, on the other hand, offers more in the way of goals, netting 12 last term. He is, of course, a more attacking player but in paying £30m for him, they must remain careful.

Why? Because things haven’t always worked out when Leicester have paid big sums for attacking players.

Look no further than Islam Slimani and Kelechi Iheanacho. The former arrived for £29m whilst the latter came in for a fee of £25m.

And in short, that is £54m well and truly down the drain.

Before this transfer window, they were the club’s record transfers which, on the face of it, was rather unforgivable considering their returns.

Slimani has a slightly better record than the Nigerian, netting 13 times in 46 games but evidence of his slump lies within the fact he’s been shipped out on loan.

Iheanacho arrived as one of the best young forward’s in the division, scoring 21 in 64 despite being behind Sergio Aguero in the pecking order at Manchester City. However, his meteoric fall from grace saw him left out of Nigeria’s squad for the Africa Cup of Nations after scoring just once last term.

It was a horrendous return from a player who cost so much.

So with that in mind, Leicester will be hoping and praying that Perez doesn’t end up on the same path.

The 25-year-old cost Newcastle just £1.5m when he initially arrived in England. His valuation now has risen considerably.

There’s no doubt that the Foxes will have been meticulous in their plans this summer and on reflection, Perez is arguably a stellar addition, despite the price.

Last season he was terrific, ending the term with six goals in his final five outings, providing plenty of evidence of his glowing quality.

But where Slimani and Iheanacho have failed, Leicester’s new arrival is perhaps better placed than the pair of them.

He arrives at the King Power with more experience in English football than Leicester’s pair of attacking flops, and that could prove crucial.

Perez has never been a player to really get excited about until recently.

Before 2018/19, he’d never scored more than eight in a single Premier League term, and his form tended to perpetually rise from tepid to tantalising throughout the season, lending Newcastle fans just a few months to really coo over the diminutive talent.

There is a reason to be wary, therefore, that this could be another expensive mistake.

But under the guidance of Rodgers he could flourish. Leicester play a direct counter-attacking style of play that plays upon Jamie Vardy’s core strengths, one which enabled him to finish the previous season with 18 strikes to his name.

Could Daniel Sturridge be set to reunite with Brendan Rodgers? Check out the video below to find out…

Perez, however, arrives with the ability to play in a number of positions and, for that reason, it’s unlikely he’ll fail in the way Iheanacho and Slimani did.

They are perhaps players who haven’t benefited the system.

Yet, their £30m Spanish signing has a history of establishing a potent partnership – take Salomon Rondon last season – and alongside Vardy that could be vitally important to whether he’s a hit.

Perez had the following to say about his relationship with the Venezuelan back in May: “We’ve got an amazing relationship. If he gets the chance to give me a goal, he’ll do it. And it’s the same the other way around.”

If the former Magpies man comes close to replicating that same sort of relationship with Leicester’s leading striker, it’s hard to see how he wouldn’t be a success.

It’s now over to him to prove he’s worth what the Foxes paid.

Liverpool’s young star Yasser Larouci could be set for big things at Anfield

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In The Pipeline series, which takes a look at some of the most promising young talent either linked with clubs or emerging from their academies…

It’s not often that you have to fend off interest from elsewhere when signing a player for the academy, but that’s what Liverpool had to do in order to land Yasser Larouci.

Last summer, the Reds managed to win the race for the Algerian-born Frenchman ahead of both Manchester United and Southampton.

The teenager impressed whilst on trial with the Saints, and Jose Mourinho even had scouts run the rule over Larouci, but the talented winger opted to join Liverpool.

“The worst we’ve played all season” but “our most straightforward final since 2003” – a Liverpool fan reflects on the UCL final in the video below…

Larouci rejected a contract with Le Havre in order to move to Anfield, a club whose academy has housed the likes of Dimitri Payet, Paul Pogba and Riyad Mahrez – if the winger becomes anything like those three, Liverpool have a player on their hands.

Winger? But why has he been playing at left-back for Jurgen Klopp in pre-season?

Well, Liverpool Under-18 boss Barry Lewtas identified Larouci’s best features – his pace, strength and direct dribbling are his main assets according to Goal – and felt that the winger would be better placed as a left-back.

Lewtas said: “A converted winger to a left-back. Yasser has done extremely well for us. He is lightning-quick and a real good personality. He has picked up the language well and is a really good boy, so we are happy with how he is progressing. In terms of him playing in a new position this season, it has worked really well for us.

“Because he is so quick it helps in his one-v-one defending, he is aggressive and is good when he runs into the big spaces and he arrives well in terms of forward runs. There were a few things in his game that I saw and thought he can play left-back for us, and he has done ever so well, so let’s see how his journey goes.”

The 18-year-old has made huge strides since arriving at the club just last summer.

Having originally gone into Lewtas’ Under-18 side – helping them win the FA Youth Cup last term – Larouci also featured for Neil Critchley’s Under-23 side.

To go from the Under-18s, to the Under-23s, and then to the first-team for pre-season shows just how rapidly Larouci is rising through the ranks, and also suggests that he is making a very good impression on and off the pitch with the Merseysiders.

Klopp has already spoken glowingly about the converted left-back, singling him out for praise after the recent friendly against Borussia Dortmund in which Larouci had to contend with the talents of Jadon Sancho.

The German said: “Yasser, our 18-year-old left-back, played against one of the biggest talents in world football and did really well.”

Luckily for Larouci, his development looks likely to continue as he has reportedly escaped serious injury, despite a horrid red-card challenge against Sevilla on Sunday saw him leave the field on a stretcher.

Let the potential blossom.

Liverpool have no way of knowing if Jurgen Klopp can trust target Fraser Forster

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to The Daily Mail, Southampton keeper Fraser Forster is a target for Liverpool, who have just six days left to get their business done before the deadline.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Reds still have Simon Mignolet on their books as backup to No.1 glovesman Alisson Becker, although reports had previously surfaced suggesting that the Belgian wanted to leave in search of game time.

The former Sunderland stopper remains at the club for now, although The Daily Mail have reported that Forster is on their list of targets.

Sky Sports had revealed that the England international had been put up for sale by the Saints this summer, along with another England international and Liverpool target in Alex McCarthy, so one would assume a deal wouldn’t be too difficult to complete if the Merseysiders were seriously interested.

[ad_pod ]

How can Jurgen Klopp trust Forster?

There comes a fair amount of ambiguity over a new signing even when they’ve been playing well for their previous employers, so you can only begin to think of how many question marks are looming over Forster given his recent history.

The former Celtic man has featured just once for Southampton competitively since a 5-2 defeat against Spurs on Boxing Day back in 2017, with his most recent appearance coming in a 3-0 loss to West Ham in the penultimate game of last season.

In that time, the 6 foot 7 stopper has slipped behind McCarthy and Angus Gunn in the pecking order, and he hasn’t even appeared in a cup game during his time on the sidelines.

Even some Southampton fans on Twitter don’t appear to be too fussed by the possibility of him leaving St Mary’s, judging by the way they reacted to Liverpool’s interest in him – one supporter described it as “a Southampton to Liverpool transfer I can get on board with.”

As a result of the 31-year-old’s severe lack of football over the last year-and-a-half, you could easily argue the fact that Jurgen Klopp wouldn’t have a clue what he’d be getting if he brought Forster to Anfield – it would almost be a complete stab in the dark, and there’s no way the German can trust the 31-year-old to step in when needed given his complete lack of football.

West Ham closing in on Albian Ajeti deal

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

West Ham United are closing in on the signing of Albian Ajeti from FC Basel, per ClaretandHugh.

What’s the word?

The Hammers entered into talks for the Switzerland international earlier this week and the report states that the club are close to finalising the transfer.

The deal for Ajeti will reportedly cost the club £11m as the Irons sign their second striker of the summer transfer window.

West Ham broke their club transfer record to secure a deal to acquire Sebastian Haller from Eintracht Frankfurt last month but Javier Hernandez is currently the only other out-and-out striker on the books.

[ad_pod ]

A key addition

The signing of Ajeti could be just as important as that of Haller.

While the latter grabbed more headlines, for understandable reasons, football clubs need depth and the signing of the Basel star will give the Irons exactly that.

A prolific player in the Swiss Super League, he has scored 43 goals in 96 games for Basel and has already netted twice in three games this season.

A different option to both Haller and Hernandez, manager Manuel Pellegrini is likely to be remarkably pleased with the purchase as he prepares his squad for their opening game of the season against Manchester City.

Indeed, he can now breathe easy should one of Haller and Hernandez pick up an injury.

Rangers fans react as Joe Aribo is called up to the Nigeria squad

The news that Joe Aribo has been selected for the full Nigeria squad for their upcoming matches has got the Rangers fans buzzing.

The midfielder will be hoping to make his debut for the Super Eagles in September against Ukraine, having opted to play for Nigeria over England.

The 23-year-old has started his career at Ibrox well, scoring three times in his opening seven outings, all in the Europa League qualifiers.

The news has gone down very well with his new side’s supporters, and not just because one of their new favourites has earned international recognition.

Aribo’s move to Ibrox has been fraught with doubters, namely his former managers Lee Bowyer and Chris Powell. The two were concerned that the ex-Charlton man was making a mistake going to Scotland, amid interest from other clubs in England.

The fact that the 23-year-old now finds himself in the Nigeria squad has given the supporters all the ammunition they need to show how wrong Bowyer and Powell’s doubts were.

Here’s what the Gers fans had to say on Twitter about his call-up:
