Rangers: Fans react to Rangers72 plans

Rangers unveiled details of a new Gers-related film on Wednesday evening, looking back at the club’s historic European triumph in 1972.

As to be expected, a number of supporters were quick to share their thoughts on the plans on social media.

Rangers released details of a behind-the-scenes movie on the club’s 2020/21 title-winning campaign on Tuesday, now available on RangersTV.

Just over 24 hours later, the Gers shared another production alongside company The City Talking, who worked on Leeds United’s Amazon Prime docuseries.

The club released plans of a 90-minute film looking at Rangers’ 1972 European Cup Winners’ Cup triumph under Willie Waddell, with never-before-seen footage from that memorable run alongside interviews from former players.

A date for release wasn’t announced, with further details set to be shared in due course, although the film could well coincide with the club’s 150th anniversary next year.

Rangers posted details of Rangers72 via their official Twitter channel on Wednesday. Here is what these Gers supporters had to say in reply, with many fans excited about the production and one labelling its impending release as ‘great news’.

Diangana has a shocker as West Brom slip up

With Valerien Ismael having seen his West Bromwich Albion side labour to a disappointing 1-1 draw in their last Championship outing, the Frenchman would have undoubtedly been hoping for the Baggies to quickly get back to winning ways against Derby County on Tuesday evening.

However, despite dominating possession of the ball – 64% to 36 % – taking a total of 25 shots, creating three big chances and completing 166 more passes than Wayne Rooney’s side, Albion failed to make the breakthrough against the Rams, with the fixture ending 0-0.

As such, while the 45-year-old’s side maintained their position at the top of the Championship table ahead of Wednesday night’s round of games, as well as kept their unbeaten record in the second tier intact, the point against Derby will very much be viewed as two dropped rather than one gained.

Furthermore, perhaps unsurprisingly considering the result, a number of Ismael’s attacking players failed to impress against the Rams, with Callum Robinson, Karlan Grant, Jordan Hugill and Matt Phillips all receiving a distinctly average SofaScore match rating of 6.8.

However, it will undoubtedly be Albion winger Grady Diangana most disappointed with his performance on Tuesday.

Lost possession 23x

Indeed, over the 23-year-old’s 90 minutes on the pitch against Derby, the forward missed one big chance, failed with all three of his attempted dribbles and his one attempted long ball and found his man with just one of his four attempted crosses.

The £9m-rated man also gave away possession of the ball on 23 separate occasions, lost 73% of his duels, conceded two fouls and was dribbled past by an opponent once.

These returns saw the £36k-per-week winger earn a highly disappointing SofaScore match rating of 6.2 for his efforts, with no player from either side receiving a lower score than the former England U21 international.

As such, with West Brom’s upcoming clash against Preston North End this Saturday now appearing to be something of a must-win game for Ismael, in order to quell any doubts that may be starting to creep in about the Frenchman, it would seem highly unlikely the 45-year-old will stick with Diangana for the fixture, as the 23-year-old badly failed his manager’s trust on Tuesday.

Everton: Fans flock to Benitez interview

Everton released footage of Rafa Benitez’s post-match interview following their defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday night via their official Twitter channel, which had a number of Toffees fans talking.

The Spaniard suffered a first defeat as Everton manager after being forced into multiple changes prior to the Villa Park clash. Regulars Jordan Pickford, Seamus Coleman and Richarlison all missed the 3-0 defeat through injury and are set to be sidelined for two to three weeks.

Quickfire goals from Matty Cash, a Lucas Digne own goal and Leon Bailey sealed the three points for the hosts.

After the match, Benitez shared his thoughts on the loss to Dean Smith’s side and his team’s injuries and looked ahead to fixtures against Queen’s Park Rangers and Norwich, with his comments available to view here.

Everton fans react

Everton posted the interview with Benitez on their official Twitter channel and here is what these Toffees supporters had to say in reply, with one labelling his comments as ‘shocking’ and others venting at the club’s board over a quiet summer transfer window given the recent spate of injuries.

Journalist hails West Brom midfielder Reach

Journalist Steve Madeley has praised Adam Reach’s impact at West Brom, following the Baggies’ dramatic late win over QPR on Friday night.

The Lowdown: Baggies back to winning ways

Valerien Ismael’s side hosted a dangerous QPR outfit at the Hawthorns, eventually picking up a hard-earned three points.

A Karlan Grant double, one of which came in the dying minutes, cancelled out Andre Gray’s early strike, as West Brom went top of the Championship.

The Latest: Madeley praises Brunt

One individual who played the entire 90 minutes was Reach, who had arguably his best game for the Baggies since signing from Sheffield Wednesday in the summer, playing two key passes.

Someone who was impressed with what he saw from the 28-year-old was The Athletic‘s Madeley, who took to Twitter on Saturday morning to speak positively about him:

“I think Reach has done well overall. Poor at Preston but he wasn’t alone in that, but decent against Derby and again yesterday. Yes, Townsend probably regains the spot when the centre-backs are fit but Reach has done a handy job.”

The Verdict: More still needed

Reach hasn’t exactly been an earth-shattering signing for West Brom so far, but his performance on Friday was an encouraging one.

He showed for Wednesday that he is capable of scoring stunning goals, and was called a ‘top player’ by Tony Pulis, but he needs to perform consistently to be a regular starter for the Baggies.

Wolves fans blast Jose Sa vs Southampton

Some Wolves fans have criticised Jose Sa after he nearly made a costly error in their game at Southampton in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

The Portugal international almost got caught on the ball late in the first half in front of his own goal, which could have gifted the Saints an opening goal at St Mary’s.

Bruno Lage’s team looked very shaky at times when trying to play out from the back, and the defence certainly did not seem confident when the 28-year-old made that mistake.

He has big boots to fill after Rui Patricio left Molineux to sign for AS Roma in the summer transfer window, but errors like these will certainly not help his cause in trying to win over the Molineux faithful, even if he did make amends with a splendid double save early in the second half.

Wolves fans on Jose Sa mistake

These Wolves supporters blasted Sa on Twitter following his pre-interval scare, with one claiming that they are ‘not convinced’ by him, while another fan even went as far as to say that the ‘keeper is ‘hopeless’:

“And Sa was supposed to be an upgrade was he?”

“How people even put Sa and Patricio in the same sentence is beyond me, nothing but a downgrade on Patricio”

Spurs could table Franck Kessie offer

Speaking to Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur and ‘insider’/club source John Wenham has made a teasing transfer claim involving AC Milan star Franck Kessie.

The Lowdown: Kessie in new deal drama…

As per reports, Milan are sweating over the future of one of their star assets, with no agreement in sight on a contract extension at the San Siro.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-developments/” title=”Spurs developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

This has alerted clubs throughout Europe looking for a powerful and assured midfield presence and it is believed that a move to the Premier League is high on Kessie’s own agenda (90min).

Tottenham are believed to be one of the clubs interested in a move and Spurs insider Wenham has now come out with his own teasing claim.

The Latest: Insider drops teasing claim…

Speaking to Football Insider, the Lilywhites source says that he knows Spurs are indeed eyeing the Ivory Coast international and he believes managing director Fabio Paratici may well present an ‘attractive offer’.

Wenham explained: “I know one player they are looking at is Kessie of AC Milan.

“He is a holding midfielder and he can bring more of that Serie A experience Paratici loves. He’s 24 and could come straight into the starting eleven. Let’s see where that one goes.

“There will be a lot of teams interested in him as a free contract player. He probably has a market value of around £40million as a valuable holding midfielder.

“Tottenham have been linked with him and I think the club will present an attractive offer to him. We can offer him good wages if he comes on a free transfer pre-contract arrangement.

“This is one Paratici will be working on with his links to the Serie A.”

The Verdict: Big statement…

Lauded as a ‘devastating’ player by former Italy international Antonio Cassano, landing the 24-year-old on a pre-contract agreement would come as Paratici’s biggest masterstroke at Spurs yet by some distance.

Despite being a natural defensive midfielder, Kessie bagged 13 Serie A goals and four assists in a more advanced role last term and completed a brilliant 88.9% of his passes in midfield (WhoScored).

Something of an all-rounder, he would surely come as a very, very astute purchase for the under-fire Nuno Espirito Santo – if indeed the 47-year-old is still at the N17 helm by the next transfer window.

Moore must now axe Sheff Weds forward

So far this season, Sheffield Wednesday have endured a rather mixed start to their League One campaign, winning four, drawing three and losing three of their opening ten league games with 15 points under their belt.

Their previous league game saw Darren Moore’s side fall to a 2-1 defeat at home to Oxford Uniter after a late injury-time winner snatched all three points for the visitors right at the death.

After that, the Owls were in action again in midweek with a 2-1 victory over League Two side Mansfield Town.

Looking ahead to their next league match against Bolton Wanderers, there’s one Owls player that played in midweek that we feel should be dropped with the weekend showdown – Saido Berahino.

On the chalkboard

Wednesday signed Berahino, who Moore described as having “a wonderful knowledge and understanding of the game,” on a permanent deal from Belgian club Zulte Waregem back in the previous summer transfer window.

Since then, the 28-year-old, who is currently valued at £1.35m according to Transfermarkt, has made just four appearances for the Owls in League One, scoring one goal which came in their 1-1 draw against Shrewsbury Town.

Looking at his performance in midweek against Mansfield, Berahino failed to have a shot at goal either on or off target, made just 11 passes, eight of which were accurate and lost possession on seven occasions before being substituted at halftime, ultimately earning him a rather uninspiring overall match rating of 6.5, making him the Owls’ second-lowest rated player, according to SofaScore.

Taking this into account, it would be in Wednesday’s and Moore’s best interest if Berahino was not included in the starting XI to face Bolton at the weekend.

In terms of who could come in for the former West Brom forward at the weekend, Callum Paterson is one name that could return to the side considering he has two goals and one assist to his name in the league and an overall season rating of 6.77, making him one of Wednesday’s highest-rated players according to WhoScored, which shows just how important he has been for the team.

Either way, Moore will have to make sure whoever he starts up front against Bolton at the weekend will be able to help the side secure all three points to get the closer to the top of the table and in the running for a promotion place.

Craig Hope drops Newcastle update on Rodgers

The Daily Mail’s Craig Hope has revealed a fresh twist over Newcastle United’s pursuit of Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers as they hunt for a replacement for Steve Bruce.

What’s the story?

Reports from Sky in Italy had initially suggested that Rodgers was the Magpies’ number one target to replace Bruce at St James’ Park, but it appears PIF have already suffered an early blow in their quest for a new manager.

Hope delivered a late night update on where things stand with the Tyneside club’s pursuit of the former Liverpool boss, insisting that Rodgers would reject any offer from Newcastle and that instead, he has his eye on the potential job at Manchester City once Pep Guardiola leaves.

Early blow for PIF

While Leicester might not have enjoyed the greatest starts to their Premier League campaign thus far – they find themselves in the bottom half of the table with just two wins from their opening seven games – that shouldn’t detract from the wonderful work Rodgers has done since taking over at the King Power.

As well as winning the FA Cup last season when he masterminded a triumph over Premier League champions Manchester City to the trophy, he has guided the Foxes to back-to-back Europa League places by finishing fifth in his two full seasons in charge.

Rodgers has overseen the development of a number of young, promising players, including the likes of Harvey Barnes and Youri Tielemans, while he’s established an eye-catching style of playing too.

It was no surprise to hear that PIF had made the Northern Irishman their number one managerial target to take over from Bruce, but this latest update from Hope is sure to have them fuming.

For all the money and investment they can promise to make, they desperately need a manager who can lead from the front and take the Magpies out of the current mire that they’re in.

Rodgers would have been perfect for that given his recent credentials.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are keen on making this landmark appointment…

Saints: Perraud must be dropped vs Chelsea

After securing their first Premier League win of the season with a 1-0 win over Leeds United, Southampton failed to capitalise on that after drawing 2-2 against Burnley at the weekend.

Next up, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side face off against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the Carabao Cup to see if they can get another win under their belts for the campaign before they return to Premier League action at the weekend.

On the chalkboard

One player that was involved in the game against Burnley at the weekend that we feel should be taken out of the starting XI for the trip to west London in midweek is left-back Romain Perraud.

We suggested that the defender should start against the Clarets but sadly, he was pretty poor.

During the match, Perraud played the full 90 minutes but made just two clearances, two tackles and most shockingly of all, lost possession on 17 occasions.

That meant he misplaced six passes and failed to accurately complete any of the five crosses he attempted, ultimately earning himself a rather uninspiring overall match rating of 6.6/10 according to SofaScore, highlighting just how disappointing he was on the day.

Southampton signed the defender during the previous summer transfer window from French club Stade Brest on a four-year deal.

Since arriving at St. Mary’s, the 24-year-old, who is currently valued at £9m according to Transfermarkt, has made seven appearances for Hasenhuttl’s side across all competitions.

Even though the Frenchman has played 90 minutes in both of Southampton’s two previous league games, we feel that he should be dropped for the Chelsea match to see if his absence on this occasion could be what the Saints need to get past Thomas Tuchel’s side and into the next round of the competition.

In terms of who could come into the side ahead of Perraud, we feel that this could be a good opportunity for Kyle Walker-Peters to come back in after being left out of the Leeds and Burnley clashes to see if he can have more of an impact against Chelsea than Perraud did a few days ago.

Whether Hasenhuttl chooses to stick with the 24-year-old at left-back against Chelsea or not, we feel that this will still be a massive task for the Saints to beat an opponent who are just coming off the back of a blistering 7-0 win over Norwich City and have only conceded three league goals so far this season.

Leicester fans rave over Daka news

Flocking to Twitter, many Leicester City supporters have raved over some news involving their striker and summer signing Patson Daka.

The Gambian, snapped up from Red Bull Salzburg, was a man in demand over the last transfer window yet it was Leicester who managed to win the £23 million race.

Daka’s transition to the Premier League and toughest division in world football has been a steady one so far but manager Brendan Rodgers may be hopeful that he can become a clinical success over his Foxes career.

On Thursday, the 23-year-old bagged a sensational four goals in the Europa League as Leicester roared back to beat Spartak Moscow 4-3.

After a thoroughly entertaining evening of football, Leicester supporters have now raved over an announcement involving Daka as he clinches the UEL Player of the Week award.

Flocking to this announcement, many fans are thrilled and of course believe it is ‘good’ news for the player.
