Man Utd let go of a potential £80m star in the making for nothing

To say Manchester United have made errors in the transfer market would be doing the whole topic a disservice.

Antony for £82m? Good grief. Harry Maguire for £80m? Wow. United have spent a shed load over the last decade or so and it’s not got them anywhere.

Erik ten Hag may have tasted FA Cup and Carabao Cup success since joining from Ajax but supporters want the Premier League, they want regular Champions League qualification.

It has been over a decade – 2011/12 – since the Red Devils last won the league. How they must crave the Halcyon days of Sir Alex Ferguson again.

He was certainly a better operator in the transfer market. No other United manager would have been able to stroll over to Arsenal and prise away Robin van Persie. It’s unlikely many other managers would have been able to secure Wayne Rooney’s signature as a teenager before turning him into an all-time great.

Perhaps he would have kept a certain Angel Gomes around too, learning from the mistake of letting a young Paul Pogba go before re-signing him.

Why Angel Gomes left Man Utd for free

The date was July 2012. Man Utd had just released Pogba after his failure to sign a new contract with the club. He went on to enjoy a fabulous time with Juventus before heading back to Old Trafford to the tune of a mega £89m transfer fee in 2016.

Paul-Pogba-Man-Utd-France

This time, the date is June 2020. Gomes is the midfielder in question walking away having been released by United. Now, in 2024, there are rumours they want him back, just like Pogba. It’s funny how football works, isn’t it?

So, why did the Englishman leave in the first place? Well, despite being made what was described as a ‘very good offer’ by The Athletic, talks broke down after many months due to a continued absence from the first-team picture.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer assured him that chances would be forthcoming but Gomes did not believe that and headed elsewhere. Lille came calling which is where he’s enjoying his football now.

2024 has been a breakout year for the talented ace who is now 24 years of age. He’s a true England superstar in the making.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

Angel Gomes' numbers for England

Now with 123 appearances under his belt for Lille, Gomes is only going from strength to strength for Lille and it surely won’t be too long before he gets a major move.

His performances for the Three Lions certainly suggest he deserves one. Handed a first international start in the last break against Finland by Lee Carsley, Gomes started for the second time for his country against the Fins again on Sunday evening. His performance was of a first-class standard.

He linked up beautifully with Jack Grealish for England’s opener. Receiving the ball in a tight pocket of space just outside the penalty area, he delightfully turned the ball around the corner into the path of the Manchester City winger who finished with ease.

It was one of many glimpses of the 24-year-old immense talent as he went on to amass a whopping 108 touches and 97 accurate passes during his 80 minutes on the field. Only Marc Guehi completed more passes, while only Guehi and Trent Alexander-Arnold had more touches of the ball. His influence, therefore, was colossal.

Gomes also looked tidy on his previous start where his 116 passes were 34 more than the next highest player and his 130 touches were 15 more than second-best Alexander-Arnold.

England have been looking for a player in his mould for ages. They have the fancy players in Bukayo Saka, in Jude Bellingham, in Cole Palmer, but they lack the simple player, the midfielder with the ability to keep things ticking over.

They lacked that player so much that Gareth Southgate and his assistant, Steve Holland, delivered presentations to the FA detailing the type of player they wanted to see coming through.

“Someone who has those skills to receive the ball with their back to goal to start the play and keep control. We’ve seen Rodri do it for Spain and Man City. That’s one profile that we would be trying to promote within our country to try and improve,” Paul McGuinness, Gomes’ former Man Utd youth coach told Sky Sports. “We searched within the FA to try and improve that type of midfield player. That’s the type of player Angel is.”

The young Lille gem may not be of the same sort of calibre as Rodri yet but this is an individual on his way to the top. Considering how much premium midfielders get sold for in the modern market, and English ones too, he could quite comfortably be valued incredibly highly in the future.

His England colleague Declan Rice was sold for a £105m fee to Arsenal in the summer of 2023, Moises Caicedo went for £115m, Romeo Lavia headed off for £53m. Gomes is not in the same boat as Rice or Caicedo but he’s comfortably ahead in his development of Chelsea ace Lavia. Split the difference through the middle and you have what could be an £80m player in waiting. Watch this space; the former Red Devil is only going to get better.

Leading the race: Liverpool could make Nunez unplayable with £100m signing

Liverpool have one of the finest frontlines in all the lands, and this is nothing new. That said, Arne Slot has added his flavour to Jurgen Klopp’s creation and made it his own.

Mohamed Salah is thriving, of course, with seven goals and seven assists across 12 fixtures in 2024/25. Sign the contract, please, love from Liverpool fans.

Meanwhile, Cody Gakpo is thriving in a more nailed-down left-flanking role, making an impact whenever he plays. Of course, the Dutchman has to jockey for a starting berth with Luis Diaz, who has been immense in his own right, but this only speaks of the depth.

Diogo Jota hasn’t quite found his feet but it’s a measure of the 27-year-old’s potency that he’s still recorded six goal contributions across nine starts. Darwin Nunez recently bagged against RB Leipzig in the Champions League but is still lacking the red-hot scoring form that fans hope for.

All told, it’s a formidable strike force (we haven’t even discussed Federico Chiesa), but FSG may yet seek more reinforcements in 2025.

Liverpool leading race for marquee signing

According to transfer insider Graeme Bailey, Liverpool and Arsenal are leading the race to sign Napoli winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who has been quite the sensation in Serie A over the past several years.

Napoli winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia

It’s understood that the English giants could go head-to-head in the battle for the Georgia international in 2025, even though he’s contracted in Naples until 2027.

Because of that, Kvaratskhelia won’t come cheap. A host of European superpowers are interested in snapping the 23-year-old up, but with negotiations ongoing, it would take a whopping bid of £100m to convince Napoli to part with their biggest prize.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Why Liverpool are interested in Kvaratskhelia

Kvaratskhelia is principally found up and down the left flank, which draws an immediate problem as to why Liverpool might not place an extortionate amount of money on acquiring his signature.

Napoli forwardKhvicha Kvaratskhelia.

However, according to Spanish sources, both Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain have retained their interest in Diaz, with the Colombian star understood to be valued at around €75m (£62m). Should he depart next year, this would surely be the move for the Reds to make.

Hailed as a “phenomenon” by Italian football pundit Mina Rzouki, the dynamic forward ranks among the top 4% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for shots taken, the top 9% for progressive carries and the top 8% for successful take-ons per 90, as per FBref, showing the electric skillset that Liverpool would get their mitts on.

He was instrumental in Napoli’s Scudetto-winning season of 2022/23, named the Serie A Player of the Season after posting 14 goals and 17 assists across all competitions.

Hailed for his “magic” by transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Kvaratskhelia is only on a £25k-per-week contract so it’s understandable that Napoli hope to convince him to stay by offering a bumper new package.

Liverpool have a greater financial capacity, however, and boast one of the most exciting projects across the continent. The Georgian superstar would progress his career to the next level by moving to Anfield, excelling and bringing the best out of those around him.

He might even be the missing piece in Nunez’s puzzle, with his arrival on Merseyside finally bringing the full scale of the Uruguayan’s quality to the fore.

Imagine Nunez & Kvaratskhelia

Nunez might not have hit free-scoring form under Slot’s wing, but he’s certainly stepped up in recent weeks, introduced off the bench against Chelsea in the Premier League last weekend following an injury to Jota and proving to be a thorn in the Blues’ side.

Darwin Nunez for Liverpool

Since given a starting berth at the spearhead against Leipzig, the 25-year-old doubled his tally for the term with a close-ranged effort following nice work from Salah, but his performance provided so much more than just that contribution.

Awarded a match-best rating of 8/10 by The Liverpool Echo’s Ian Doyle, it’s clear he’s starting to make headway. Doyle wrote: ‘Always a willing runner and was keen to hold it up at times as well. Took his goal like a real poacher and came so close to a second. Should have won a penalty too. Lead the line superbly in the absence of Jota.’

Nunez is starting to improve, with his movement and game intelligence speaking of a prosperous future at Liverpool, should he keep his head down and continue to work hard. Kvaratskhelia could be the missing ingredient.

The Georgian’s pace and wizard-like ability on the ball could create so many problems for Liverpool’s adversaries, almost like a turbo-charged Diaz – to another level.

Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez-1

The Reds’ transfer target has scored four goals from eight league appearances this term, but he’s also averaged 1.8 key passes, 1.4 dribbles and tackles and 4.8 successful duels per game, as per Sofascore, speaking of a natural-born athleticism and application that would add to the controlled system that Slot has implemented.

He’s also a sharp distributor across average phases of play, completing 80% of his top-flight passes in 2024/25. With such a protean attacking quality, Liverpool could truly become a force to be reckoned with up front, with the respective forwards’ interchangeability and incisiveness opening up windows of opportunity to keep opponents guessing.

If Salah renews his contract, and acts as architect, then it could be a dangerous thing indeed. With Arsenal also sniffing around, Liverpool might want to pounce sooner rather than later, lest they let a once-in-a-decade chance pass them by.

The 9 best derby matches in UK football – ranked

Derby fixtures are the essence of the game. There is a different feel to a derby clash as opposed to a routine league fixture or cup tie, one that sparks some added passion.

The day of the game is filled with nerves. Will there be bragging rights at the end of the 90 minutes? Who will be the hero? Countless questions arise.

The UK is filled with plenty of mouthwatering rivalries that stretch from the south coast up to the north of Scotland. Several go under the radar, especially those lower down in the footballing pyramid.

Those in the Premier League or Scottish Premiership are among some of the most intense in the country. From Glasgow to London, rivalries are formed in each major city in the UK.

Here, we take a look at nine of the fiercest derby matches across England, Scotland and Wales.

Ranking the 10 biggest derbies in European football

Football FanCast takes a look at the biggest rivalries across the continent.

ByAlex Roberts Nov 4, 2023 9 Cardiff City v Swansea City South Wales derby

Cardiff and Swansea

Cardiff and Swansea may be separated by around 40 miles, but it shouldn’t deter from the fact the teams both try to get the better of each other during games.

The first game between the sides took place in 1912, ending in a draw. Since then, the two clubs have played against each other 117 times, with Cardiff City coming out on top by 46 wins to 43 for Swansea City.

The teams made history during the 2013/14 campaign, facing off against each other in the Premier League for the first time. In terms of passion and atmosphere, the game is easily one of the most competitive derbies in the UK.

8 Sheffield United v Sheffield Wednesday Steel City derby

Sheffield is one of England’s most historic cities, which also has two of its most iconic clubs, which are separated by just under four miles.

Famous for playing a crucial role in the Industrial Revolution, steel production in the 19th century grew exponentially, and Sheffield is known as the Steel City for this very reason.

A total of 131 games have been played between Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday, with the Blades coming out on top with 46 wins compared to the Owls’ 42 victories. The Steel City derby is back on the calendar this season, as the clubs find themselves in the same league for the first time since 2018/19. Expect the clubs to make up for lost time.

7 Hearts v Hibernian Edinburgh derby

Hearts vs Hibs

The Edinburgh derby is one of the fiercest in Scotland, contested by two teams who were formed in the 1870s. Scotland does not have a shortage of rivalries in the professional game, but clashes between the two capital sides have that extra spice to them.

Overall, 664 games have been played between Hearts and Hibernian, although ‘only’ 339 have been in competitive games. The Jambos lead the way with 149 wins in competitive games, with one of the most famous coming during the 2012 Scottish Cup final.

Having first met in the 1896 final, Hearts won 5-1 at Hampden 12 years ago against Hibs to claim the bragging rights in what was a game still celebrated by the supporters.

6 Manchester City v Manchester United Manchester derby

The Manchester derby has not often been played while both teams are at their peak. The first match took place in 1881, being won by Manchester United, who were then called Newton Heath.

193 fixtures between the two clubs have taken place since, with the Old Trafford side winning 79 and Manchester City claiming 61 victories. United’s dominance under Matt Busby and Sir Alex Ferguson often coincided with City struggling, especially from the late 90s to early 00s.

Recently, Pep Guardiola has been the saviour for the Etihad side, who have won six of the previous seven league titles. United, on the other hand, haven’t won the Premier League since 2013.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Oct 26, 2023 5 Arsenal v Tottenham Hotspur North London derby

oleksandr-zinchenko-arsenal-tottenham-hotspur-academy-postecoglou-george-abbott

The north London derby is certainly one of the most intense rivalries to take place in the capital, especially when it comes to the quality of the teams.

Arsenal are the most successful club out of the two, and their superiority has been shown since games between them began in 1887.

The Gunners have won 83 times compared to 61 victories for Spurs, although Arsenal went on a run of just one win in the fixture between 2007 and 2023, as Spurs claimed nine wins during that period.

4 Everton v Liverpool Merseyside derby

Similar to the north London derby, the Merseyside rivalry is one contested by one team who is more successful than the other.

It is the longest-running top-flight derby in England, being played continuously since the 1962/63 season. Part of the allure is that Anfield and Goodison Park are located less than a mile apart. Although known for being a relatively friendly derby match compared to others in this list, the fixture is the one with the most red cards shown in the Premier League era.

Liverpool have won 99 games compared to 68 for Everton, with 77 draws, indicating that Reds have plenty of bragging rights.

The Premier League matches with the most cards

Here are the feistiest, card-happy matches in Premier League history.

1 ByLewis Thompson Sep 14, 2024 3 Aston Villa v Birmingham City Second City derby

Commonly known as the Second City Derby, the games between Aston Villa and Birmingham City are often tense affairs, with the Villa Park side coming out on top more often than not.

The clubs haven’t faced each other since March 2019, in a game that saw Jack Grealish punched by a Birmingham supporter, highlighting the intense rivalry between the two sides.

With Villa riding high and Birmingham in League One, it could be a while before they next meet.

2 Newcastle United v Sunderland Tyne-Wear derby

The Tyne-Wear derby takes place between Newcastle United and Sunderland, with the results between the teams fairly even. Indeed, Newcastle have just one more win over their rivals (54 vs 53). Although the derby hasn’t been played in the top flight since 2016, the Magpies claimed an FA Cup win over Sunderland earlier in 2024.

Could this derby return to the Premier League next season? Only time will tell.

1 Celtic v Rangers Old Firm derby

Rangers vs Celtic

The Old Firm derby isn’t just the biggest rivalry in the UK, but it is one of the fiercest in world football, contested by two teams who simply detest each other.

This feeling spreads down to the supporters on game day. The two teams have dominated Scottish football, winning every single league title since 1986.

Combined, the pair have won 109 league titles between them, while Celtic recently overtook Rangers in the overall head-to-head record, winning 170 matches compared to 169 for the Ibrox side. No game is ever meaningless between the teams.

Arsenal wasted £94m on "irrelevant" signing who then left for £0

During his long reign as Arsenal manager, Arsène Wenger signed some genuinely world-class footballers.

The likes of Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira and Robert Pirès were all sensational stars who more than earned their wages, but for all the stars he signed, the Frenchman also bought his fair share of flops.

The likes of Andre Santos, Francis Jeffers and Nicklas Bendtner, who certainly didn’t deserve their sizable wages, and then there were those in between, the players who weren’t terrible but also didn’t make good on their transfers, players like the one Wenger signed in the summer of 2017.

Arsenal's 2017 summer transfer window

Before we get to the player in question, let’s look at one of the other signings Wenger made that summer: Sead Kolasinac.

The Bosnian international had just come off an incredible campaign with German giants FC Schalke, in which he scored three goals and provided nine assists in 36 brilliant appearances.

With form like this, you might have expected the Gunners to pay a pretty penny for the exciting defender, but due to his contract expiring, they were able to snap him up for free.

Unfortunately, this also meant they were willing to hand him a hefty £100k-per-week wage, and after a promising start, it was abundantly clear the Karlsruhe-born star was not cut out for the Premier League.

He would make 118 appearances across his five years with the club, and in the summer of 2022, his contract was terminated by mutual consent. It would be hard to describe Kolasinac’s time in N5 as anything other than a massive failure, but he still cost the club considerably less money than one of his former teammates who signed in the same summer.

Wenger's costly addition

The signing in question is former French international Alexandre Lacazette, who was actually the only other signing made that summer and cost the club a then-record fee of £46.5m.

Now, the first thing to say is that the former Lyon star did have some impressive games for the Gunners, and throughout his time in North London, was someone well-liked by the fans for his obvious effort, but considering how much he cost and the fact he was handed a whopping £182k-per-week salary, it would be fair to say he did not live up to expectations.

In all, he scored just 71 goals for the club in 206 appearances while providing 33 assists to boot, and while he had some brilliant seasons in which he racked up 25 plus goal involvements, he had some others where he didn’t even reach 15.

It might sound harsh, but he was even described as “irrelevant” by journalist Charles Watts for a notable poor showing against Brighton & Hove Albion in April 2022, and former professional Stan Collymore also slammed him for “a lack of working for his team” in a 2020 defeat to Aston Villa.

With comments like these and a middling return in front of goal, it wasn’t that surprising that upon his free transfer back to Lyon in the summer of 2022, there weren’t too many fans upset at the thought of him leaving, at least not for footballing reasons.

Ultimately, it might be harsh to call Lacazette a flop for his efforts on the pitch, but given the extreme costs to Arsenal off the pitch, his transfer cannot be considered a success either.

Aston Villa eyeing highly rated Man Utd gem if Amorim signs a replacement

Aston Villa are plotting a shock transfer swoop for a “highly regarded” defender, according to a new report. The Villans have been very busy in the last few transfer windows, and it appears as though they could be active once again when January arrives, as Unai Emery tries to compete in the Premier League and in the Champions League.

Aston Villa rival Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea to sign £5m-a-year free agent

Emery could be about to improve his strike force, as Aston Villa are willing to match the player’s demands.

ByBrett Worthington Nov 13, 2024 Aston Villa transfer news

Emery’s side is currently in a rough patch of form, as they’ve lost their last four games in all competitions, form that has seen them lose ground in the Premier League. Villa will be looking to get back to winning ways after the international break, but this run may have also opened their eyes to what they need to strengthen when January comes.

Villa have always been busy in transfer markets under Emery, and that may not be changing anytime soon, as the Midlands side are interested in signing Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall from Chelsea. The midfielder has been with the Blues since the summer, but it has been a frustrating time as he’s struggled for game time, and that has put his future in doubt heading into the New Year.

As well as Dewsbury-Hall, Villa are reportedly prepared to meet the demands of striker Jonathan David. The 24-year-old looks set to leave Lille at the end of the campaign as a free agent, and Villa are among the host of teams interested in signing him. The transfer talk doesn’t stop there for the Villans either, as they also have their eye on a very promising young defender.

Aston Villa plotting swoop for Man Utd gem

According to TEAMtalk, Aston Villa are interested in signing Manchester United defender Harry Amass. The 17-year-old left-back came through the academy at Watford but was picked up by the Red Devils in 2023 after putting in some very impressive displays.

Amass, who is described as being “highly regarded” in this report, played for United’s under-18s last season but has now been promoted to the club’s under-21s. The left-back has yet to make an appearance in the first team, but he has been named in several matchday squads and appeared heavily in their pre-season tour of the USA in the summer.

This report states that Villa are long-term admirers of Amass, as they tried to sign the player from Watford before United did. They have kept an eye on Amass’ development, as he’s tipped for a very bright future.

The teenager is said to be on the cusp of breaking into the first team but has yet to play for United despite injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia. And while the Red Devils apparently want to keep him, the fact they are in the market for a new left-back could open the door for Villa to swoop in to try and hijack him.

Amass is under contract at United until 2027, and any interest from Villa or elsewhere would not be welcomed by the Red Devils, but Villa are keeping an eye on his situation.

Celtic could now be beaten to signing of “special” talent by huge PL club

Celtic have been dealt a potential big blow with the news that a huge Premier League club could pip them to the signing of a “special” footballer, according to a new transfer report.

Latest Celtic news

The Hoops return to Scottish Premiership action on Saturday evening, with Brendan Rodgers taking his team to Hearts for another important game in the title race.

Away from the on-pitch action, there are plenty of Celtic transfer rumours doing the rounds, with Kanji Okunuki linked with a move to the Scottish giants. The FC Nurnberg ace could be the latest Japanese addition at Parkhead, providing more depth in attacking areas.

Another rumoured option for the Hoops is Manchester City youngster James McAtee, with the 22-year-old finding it hard to force his way into Pep Guardiola’s plans this season, appearing for just one minute in the Premier League this season. A host of English top-flight clubs are also in the mix, however, with West Ham United, Southampton, Nottingham Forest and Leicester City all mentioned.

Internal talks have reportedly taken place at Celtic regarding a move for Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill, too, with the 28-year-old available on a free transfer at the end of this season when his Clarets deal expires.

Celtic suffer blow in pursuit of "special" player

According to Football Insider, Celtic are in danger of missing out on the signing of Motherwell midfielder Lennon Miller, with Premier League giants Liverpool showing an interest in him.

It is claimed that the Reds could blow the Hoops “out of the water” by enticing him to Anfield, with Rodgers’ men in danger of losing out on a hugely exciting target.

This would be an undoubted setback for Celtic, considering Miller is arguably one of the most gifted young Scottish players in the game right now.

The 18-year-old has already become an important figure for Motherwell at such a young age, making 33 appearances in the Scottish Premiership, while manager Stuart Kettlewell has heaped praise on his qualities as a footballer:

“Lennon needs to relax a bit! I think I had more beads of sweat on my brow than he did on his, but I just think it’s pretty special when you’re looking at an 18-year-old who shows that level of composure, that belief and trust in himself, that he can convert a penalty kick the way he did. I go back to the bigger picture and speak about his performance in general, which I think leads to that, but nothing really surprises me with him.”

While Celtic remain a huge club, Liverpool could present Miller with an even more exciting opportunity, considering the Reds are top of the Premier League currently and going places under new head coach Arne Slot.

They could offer him bigger wages than the Hoops, which is an issue, but the hope is that the teenage midfielder feels that staying in Scotland is best for his development.

Celtic could now look at move to sign new Japan international in January

He could be an excellent mid-season addition.

ByHenry Jackson Nov 23, 2024

If Celtic were able to beat Liverpool to his signing, and rivals Rangers for that matter, it would feel like a major coup, given the long-term ceiling that Miller has.

Saka & Martinelli hybrid: Arsenal chasing "one of the best LWs in Europe"

Things haven’t exactly been plain sailing for Arsenal in the Premier League this season.

Mikel Arteta’s side have suffered from poorly timed injuries to key players, questionable suspensions in big games, and an overall downturn in form just when Liverpool seem to have found theirs.

However, the last week or so has seen the Gunners get back to somewhere near their best with three impressive wins on the bounce and brilliant performances from defence to attack, particularly out wide.

Bukayo Saka has been utterly sensational, and Gabriel Martinelli has found himself on the scoresheet a couple of times to boot, so fans should be particularly excited about reports linking them to a player who’s been compared to the pair of them.

Arsenal transfer news

According to a recent report from Steve Kay of Football Transfers, Arsenal are interested in Paris Saint-Germain’s incredibly exciting Bradley Barcola.

The report claims that the Gunners are keen to add another dynamic winger to their ranks in 2025, and the young Frenchman is one of the players they have identified.

Interestingly, while the report claims that a transfer for the 22-year-old looks unlikely at the moment, rumours of a growing split between him and manager Luis Enrique could provide the North Londoners with an opportunity to strike in the future.

In all, signing Barcola could prove complicated, but given his ability, potential, and comparisons with Saka and Martinelli, Arsenal should still try to get it done.

Barcola's comparisons to Saka and Martielli

So, before looking at Barcola’s performances for PSG over the last few seasons, let’s examine these comparisons to Saka and Martinelli and where they come from, for that matter.

While there are apparent similarities in the fact that all three are young and exciting wingers, the comparison in question actually stems from FBref.

The statistical hub compares players in similar positions in Europe’s top five leagues, the Champions League and Europa League, then creates a list of the ten most comparable players for each one, and in this instance, has concluded that the Englishman is the third most similar attacking midfielder or winger to the Frenchman this season, while the Brazilian comes in fifth.

Likewise, the former Lyon ace ranks closely with the former Ituano gem in metrics such as goals per shot and per shot on target, key passes and passes into the penalty area, tackles and aerial duels won, all per 90.

So, with it clear that the 11-capped international shares clear statistical similarities to both Arsenal stars, does he have the raw output to suggest he’d be able to keep up with them on the pitch? Absolutely.

In just 18 appearances this season, the Lyon-born dynamo has scored ten goals and provided two assists, equating to an average of a goal involvement every 1.5 games and lending credence to analyst Ben Mattinson’s claim that he’s “one of the best LWs in Europe.”

Moreover, in 42 appearances last season, only 29 of which were starts, the 6 foot phenom scored five goals and provided nine assists, which is made all the more impressive by the fact that he was just 20 years old at the start of the campaign.

Ultimately, while it could prove complicated, Arsenal should be doing all they can to sign Barcola next year, as he already looks like a superstar at just 22, and with players like Saka and Martin Odegaard around him, the sky would b the limit for his potential.

Man Utd need to sell £150k-p/w star who Murtough thought was "outstanding"

Manchester United’s transfer business has left a lot to be desired in recent years, especially during the tenure of Erik ten Hag, who tried to return to the glory days back at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman spent over £600m on new additions during his time in charge but failed to recruit the talent that was able to help his quest of taking the Red Devils back to the top of the Premier League.

In his final season at the helm, the 54-year-old won the FA Cup but was unable to secure a top-four finish in the league, ending 2023/24 in eighth place.

He lost his job just a handful of matches into the current campaign, with his new additions unable to have the desired effect – ultimately costing him his job.

There are various options to choose from, but countless of his additions have bled the club dry, looking nowhere near value for money given their excessive transfer fees.

Ten Hag’s worst signings as Man United manager

Winger Antony followed boss Ten Hag from Ajax during the summer of 2022, costing a mammoth £86m – the second-highest transfer fee the club have paid for a player after Paul Pogba.

Undoubtedly, high expectations were placed on the 24-year-old’s shoulders after his move, but he’s since only scored 12 times in his 89 appearances – an average of one goal every seven matches.

His antics and showboating haven’t gone down well with the United faithful, often seeing him come under fire, restricting him to only three league appearances this season to date.

Casemiro was another expensive addition, costing £70m from Real Madrid during the same transfer window, looking to add quality to the midfield department, but the move hasn’t gone as either party would’ve expected.

He may have made over 100 appearances for the Red Devils, but having often been at fault for goals by making individual errors, he appears to be coming towards the back end of his career at the age of 32. no sell-on fee expected from their big-money investment is expected.

He’s not the only midfielder to fail to make the grade in the North West, with new boss Ruben Amorim needing to part ways with one of Ten Hag’s additions in January.

The Man Utd player who Amorim needs to sell in January

Denmark international Christian Eriksen joined on a free transfer in the summer of 2022, after leaving Brentford at the end of the previous season – looking to provide experience at the heart of the United side.

The former Tottenham star is now 32, and like Casemiro, coming to the back end of his days at the top level, leaving new boss Amorim to make a call on his future in Manchester.

He’s only made one appearance since the 39-year-old’s appointment, coming during his first outing at Ipswich Town, failing to appear in another game since – dropping rapidly down the pecking order.

Former Sporting Director John Murtough dubbed the Dane as “one of the best” upon his transfer, heaping high expectations after his transfer to Old Trafford.

He may have made 86 appearances since then, but with his contract expiring at the end of the campaign, Amorim may look to offload the experienced talent before his deal runs out.

His £150k-per-week wages have failed to be reflected by his importance since the appointment of the new boss, desperately struggling to make an impact on the first team.

The upcoming window may represent the last opportunity to recoup any form of transfer fee, whilst also fitting in with the current cost-cutting operation in place at Manchester.

He’s been a solid squad member, but if the club are to improve and reach the next level, Amorim will need to be brutal with his decision-making of the current crop of players.

Eriksen is one that could be sacrificed, potentially allowing for needed improvement across the board, and giving the new boss the best possible chance of being a success during his tenure in Manchester.

Man Utd add £62m Juventus star to transfer shortlist amid contract standoff

Manchester United and INEOS have added a £62 million “big-name” player to their transfer shortlist, according to a recent report. Ruben Amorim will be aware of the task that faces him to get United back on top, and for that reason, he will be pushing the hierarchy to get some transfer business done in January.

United are closing in on the signing of a player who can help address their problem position.

The Red Devils have been linked with moves for some high-profile players in recent days, but it is unclear if they are transfers that can occur in the New Year. One player who has emerged on their radar is Mike Maignan. A move for Maignan will only come about if Andre Onana departs Old Trafford, with his future up in the air at the moment. The Red Devils are putting plans in place if they do need to move for a goalkeeper, and Maignan is at the top of their list.

While being linked with potential big money arrivals, United are closing in on their first signing for 2025, as Diego Leon looks set to join the club. United have agreed a £4 million deal to sign Leon from Cerro Porteno. The Premier League side have moved quickly to wrap up this deal, as on Wednesday it was reported that there were “active talks”. Now, the “groundwork” of the transfer has been done, and Leon is expected to join United in the summer, as he needs to wait until he turns 18 to join his new team.

Man Utd add £62m player to transfer shortlist

According to Football Insider, Manchester United have added Juventus’ Dusan Vlahovic to their transfer shortlist. The Serbia international joined the Italian giants in January 2022, and while he has continued to score goals, he has yet to win the Serie A, his only success being the Italian Cup in the 2023/24 campaign.

Vlahovic, who has been dubbed a “big-name” player in the past, scored 10 goals in 27 league games during the 2022/23 season and then went on to better that last term, netting 16 times in 33 Serie A games. At 24, he has continued to be a clinical striker in one of the most competitive leagues in football, and that has put him on the radar of the Red Devils.

United have now added Vlahovic to their shortlist as they look at options to improve their forward line. Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee are held in high regard at Old Trafford but are struggling to find the back of the net on a consistent basis.

INEOS are continuing to monitor Vlahovic’s situation at Juventus, as his contract comes to an end in 2026. Talks are being held over a new contract for the forward, but it is currently described as a “standoff,” which has placed his future in jeopardy. United see Vlahovic as an alternative target to the likes of Viktor Gyokeres and Victor Osimhen, but it would be costly, as Juventus would want £62 million to sell the striker.

Ronaldo on £3.2m a week! The 11 highest-paid stars in the Saudi Pro League

The Saudi Pro League is renowned for the vast wages it pays footballers, but who are the highest-earning players in the competition?

European football may still dominate the modern game, but Saudi Arabia’s biggest league has become far more prominent in recent years.

While the Saudi Pro League’s standard is still a noticeable drop down from that of the Premier League, La Liga and Bundesliga, it has still attracted some of the biggest names in the game, seeing its reputation grow in the process.

Weekly wages: Chelsea FC 2025/26 highest-paid players

Football FanCast has gathered all the information on how much each player earns at Chelsea.

ByCharlie Smith Sep 23, 2025

Here are the 11 highest earners in the division, with the help of data from Capology.

11 Theo Hernandez (Al-Hilal) €392k per week

A regular for France, it was perhaps a surprise when Theo Hernandez left AC Milan behind for a tiny fee of £21m. We say tiny as it is for the oil-rich Saudi Pro League.

Now at Al-Hilal, the left-back is one of the best-paid defenders in the world.

10 Darwin Nunez (Al-Hilal) €431k per week

At Liverpool, the Uruguayan striker became more commonly known for missing simple chances in front of goal and the Reds will have perhaps been glad to see the back of him in the summer of 2025 when he was purchased by Al-Hilal.

Remarkably, despite his record in front of goal at Anfield, he’s now one of football’s highest-paid players.

9 Marcelo Brozovic (Al-Nassr) €465k per week

Marcelo Brozovic enjoyed a strong career in Europe, spending his peak years at Inter and also reaching the 2018 World Cup final with Croatia.

Now 32, the midfielder is enjoying the autumn of his career with Al-Nassr, joining them from the San Siro in 2023.

8 N'Golo Kante (Al-Ittihad) €481k per week

Ruben Neves challenges N'Golo Kante for Al-Hilal.

One of the most likeable footballers of the modern era, N’Golo Kante’s move to the Saudi Pro League arguably came as a surprise.

The former Leicester City and Chelsea title-winning midfielder is now plying his trade at Al-Ittihad, winding down in his career but not yet hanging up his boots for France. Could he bow out for his country at the 2026 World Cup?

7 Sergej Milinkovic-Savic (Al-Hilal) €491k per week

The exit of Sergej Milinkovic-Savic from the European game came as one of the biggest surprises, considering he departed for Saudi Arabia while still at the peak of his powers.

The 29-year-old appears to be impressing at current club Al-Hilal where he already has a league title in Saudi Arabia under his belt, perhaps justifying his crazy wages for his team.

6 Ivan Toney (Al-Ahli) €491k per week

Ivan Toney moved to the Saudi Pro League from Brentford during the 2024 summer window, ending months of transfer speculation.

The fact that the striker is playing in Saudi Arabia could hinder his chances of playing for England moving forward, and it remains to be seen if he will return to the Premier League at some point in the future.

5 Kalidou Koulibaly (Al-Hilal) €667k per week

Who else had forgotten that Kalidou Koulibaly had a brief and disappointing spell at Chelsea?

The Senegalese never adjusted to life in England after being a world-class performer at Napoli, and he decided to trade Stamford Bridge for Al-Hilal last year. A staggering €667,000 (£551,000) per week was seemingly too good to turn down for the defender, who is now in his mid 30s.

4 Sadio Mane (Al-Nassr) €769k per week

Sadio Mane has been part of a Liverpool exodus to the Saudi Pro League in recent years, with former teammates Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and Roberto Firmino all heading there.

Now the highest-earning ex-Reds player in the competition, the 32-year-old has shone for Al-Nassr, bagging over 40 goals and over 30 assists since moving.

3 Karim Benzema (Al-Ittihad) €961k per week

One of the leading strikers of his generation, only Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Robert Lewandowski have scored more Champions League goals than Karim Benzema.

Having won all there is to win during an incredible career at Real Madrid, the Frenchman opted to join Al-Ittihad at the end of the 2022/23 season.

Who has been the best in front of goal in the famous club competition?

ByCharlie Smith May 14, 2025 2 Riyad Mahrez (Al-Ahli) €1m per week

What City would give to have a peak-level Riyad Mahrez playing for them right now. The winger enjoyed five memorable years at the Etihad, winning the Premier League and Champions League among many other trophies, but he was another who headed to Saudi Arabia for a huge payday.

Mahrez is a teammate of Toney’s at Al-Ahli, where he has showcased his attacking class with goals and assists aplenty.
