It’s rare that a world-record signing of any kind can result in being a bargain for a club, but Liverpool, that is proving to be the case.

When the Reds signed Virgil van Dijk for £75 million from Southampton at the end of 2017, the highest fee in world football for a defender, not many expected the Dutch international to be as good a signing as he has turned out to be.

There were sceptics when the signing was announced that Liverpool had overspent for van Dijk, with the deal costing £25 million than the previous most expensive centre-back signing of all time when David Luiz made the move from Chelsea to PSG in 2014, but these critics were more than silenced a few months into the defender’s tenure at Liverpool.

To say van Dijk has revolutionised Liverpool since his arrival would be an understatement. The former Saints defender has turned the fortunes of the club around in a big way, turning the Reds from a team that couldn’t buy a clean sheet to a side that found it easy to keep opponents out, with the Dutch centre-back the marshal at the back.

The subsequent signing of Alisson in last summer’s transfer window has only made Liverpool better and improved van Dijk’s game, as the defender can now focus on defending what’s in front of him rather than having to sprint back if a player gets past him.

Van Dijk has been influential in Liverpool’s charge for the Premier League title this season and has been one of the main factors as to why the club have gone closer than every to the trophy that has eluded them for so many years.

His recent PFA Player of the Year win is a testament as to how impressive van Dijk has been for Liverpool this season as the Dutch defender has established himself as one of the best centre-backs in world football, and for £75 million, the former Southampton man is continuing to look and more and more like a bargain with each passing game.

وأكد الاتحاد الأرجنتيني، أن استبعاد ديبالا من قائمة المنتخب، بسبب مشاكل يعاني منها اللاعب في الجهاز التناسلي والبولي، وسيبقى في تورينو من أجل الراحة.

منتخب الأرجنتين سيواجه بارجواي يوم 13 نوفمبر، ثم بيرو في 18 من الشهر ذاته.

Tottenham Hotspur suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final tie against Ajax in north London on Tuesday, and Liverpool fans were quick to have their say on Dele Alli’s display.

Spurs would have been looking to the England international to provide a positive spark against the Dutch outfit given Son Heung-Min and Harry Kane were absent through suspension and injury respectively, but he ultimately failed to show up.

The 23-year-old has generally struggled throughout the entire campaign and hasn’t matched the performances and statistics he has produced in previous years, which will surely be a concern for Mauricio Pochettino.

Reds supporters were obviously keeping a close eye on who they could face in the Champions League final should they manage to progress past Barcelona, but they were clearly left far from impressed with the former MK Dons man.

While one described him as the “biggest myth in English football”, another described him as “stinking up the place”.

The Anfield faithful may have wished they had signed Alli in the past, but it certainly doesn’t seem to be the case now.

أكد إسماعيل يوسف عضو مجلس إدارة نادي الزمالك أن مصطفى محمد مهاجم الفريق الأول لكرة القدم تلقى 3 عروض للاحتراف خارج مصر خلال الفترة السابقة.

وتمكن مصطفى محمد من تسجيل 8 أهداف مع الزمالك في دوري أبطال إفريقيا خلال الموسم الحالي.

وقال إسماعيل يوسف خلال حديثه ببرنامج “زمالكاوي” المذاع على قناة الزمالك: “لم أرَ لاعبًا منذ اعتزال جمال عبد الحميد يلعب برأسه مثل مصطفى محمد، وهو من أفضل لاعبي العالم في التسديدات الرأسية”.

It has been quite a year to be a Barnsley supporter, hasn’t it?

Having suffered a dismal relegation from the Championship last May, the Tykes took an almighty risk in the summer by appointing Daniel Stendel as their new boss.

Although the 45-year-old had previously experienced success in Germany with Hannover, the fact that he had not managed in England must have been concerning for some at Oakwell.

However, they needn’t have worried as by revolutionising Barnsley’s style of play, Stendel created the foundations needed to launch a sustained bid for promotion in League One.

Fighting it out with the likes of Sunderland and Portsmouth for the majority of the season, the Tykes landed the killer blow in April as a run of four consecutive victories saw the Yorkshire-based outfit secure a top-two finish in the third tier.

Although Stendel will be proud of his achievements during the 2018/19 campaign, he will be hoping that this is only the start of his story at Barnsley.

With the club making the step up in level next season, the German will be hoping that Kieffer Moore can provide the all-important difference in the Championship. Despite missing a considerable chunk of the year due to injury, the forward still managed to fire in 17 goals for the Tykes during a highly impressive campaign.

If Moore is able to replicate his goal-scoring antics when the club make their return to the second tier, there is no reason why Stendel’s side cannot go on to achieve success, especially when you consider that they boast a squad that includes the likes of Alex Mowatt, Cameron McGeehan and Cauley Woodrow.

On a personal note, the £675k-rated ace (via Transfermarkt) will be wanting to prove his doubters wrong as he has yet to deliver on a consistent basis in the Championship having played at that particular level for Yeovil Town, Ipswich Town and Barnsley in the past.

It really has ended up being a disappointing season for Rangers’ fans, players and Steven Gerrard. With a second-place finish confirmed, it is time for the management staff to look back on their campaign and find out where they will need to improve next year. 

After last week’s 2-0 win over Celtic in the final Old Firm of the term, it may be easy for some people to forget the issues that lay about for the Gers. If some fans are to forget, Gerrard certainly won’t, there are plenty of things that need to be looked at in order for the 38-year-old to close the gap on Celtic.

Here’s a couple.

Disciplinary record not good enough 

It has been a clear red flag for Gerrard throughout the entirety of this season, with an unbelievable total of 12 red cards picked up in all competitions, five of which have come from one key player, it is clear to see that Gerrard and his coaching staff will have to increase the punishment for lack of discipline in the future.

TWELVE in ONE season! That is simply shocking.

Too many loanee players in the starting line up

With just under half of the usual starting line up being loan players, it is clear that Gerrard has some serious business to do in the summer, otherwise he is left with very little from this season.

With a number of key players like Ryan Kent and Joe Worrall being just a couple of the loan players, it is uncertain as to whether Gerrard can ensure that they will be in the dressing room next season.

It’s always a risk building a team with loan players, especially when their future is uncertain towards the end of the campaign.

Arsenal are currently enduring a 17 day wait between their last Premier League game of the season against Burnley and their final in Baku to compete for the Europa League trophy and a place in the Champions League.
