Man Utd fans hammer David de Gea after poor performance against Man City

One of the world’s best goalkeepers of the past decade, it’s fair to say David de Gea hasn’t exactly enjoyed the greatest couple of years in recent memory.

The Spain international has been included in numerous PFA Team of the Years since joining Manchester United, but the past season-and-a-half have really painted a picture of a decline. Last year saw him commit four errors that directly led to goals in the Premier League, whilst he has made major howlers this season too – letting in a near-post effort from Patrick van Aanholt, or letting an effort from Ismaila Sarr slip through his hands.

Against Manchester City on Tuesday night, there were no real obvious gaffes or blooper-reel worthy mistakes. But the 29-year-old once again looked anything but his real self. As per Sofascore, his 6.2 match rating was only better than teammate Daniel James, whilst his distribution was terrible, failing to complete 12 of his 13 attempted long balls.

Quickfire Quiz: How much do you know about Man Utd’s history in the January transfer window?

And after seeing his performance, United fans flooded to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the display, with a few calling for him to be dropped or just skip out this season.

Some fans took aim over his distribution and use of the ball, with one supporter in particular calling him the “worst” amongst the top goalkeepers.

A couple of fans even simply insisted that De Gea’s reign at the top of the game is now over, with one supporter claiming that he’s “not a keeper for the modern game”.

With Dean Henderson coming back in the summer after his season-long loan, and Solskjaer himself praising number two goalkeeper Sergio Romero, the pressure is well and truly on De Gea. Whilst he didn’t make a major error or howler against City, he just didn’t radiate that same sense of confidence, with his distribution looking particularly shaky as aforementioned. The Spaniard faces a genuinely tough fight to keep his number one jersey at Old Trafford in the long-term.

Meanwhile, Manchester United making a swoop for this 13-assist ace could help transform them.

Spurs target Piatek would be a huge gamble for the club

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing AC Milan striker Krzysztof Piatek, per The Guardian.

The club are, of course, at crisis point.

Harry Kane is injured and will not return to training until April.

The big fat Tottenham quiz of 2019 – how much do you remember about the last year at Spurs?

As such, they are said to be keen to recruit a striker this month; Piatek could instantly slot into the XI and then provide back-up for the England international next season.

Milan are said to want to receive a return on their £30m investment in the forward, but would he really be worth it?

Last season, Piatek was in electric form. Across 2018/19, he made 19 appearances for Genoa, scoring 13 goals, and hit nine in 20 for Milan.

This season, though, he has undergone a dramatic downturn in form.

Across 18 games this term, he has scored just four times. His last goal came against Bologna in a 3-2 win in December. Prior to that, his most recent goal came in October.

And throughout this season, his performances have been statistically poor too.

Per WhoScored, he has yet to provide an assist and has registered 2.9 shots per game.

Across 18 games, that comes to 52.2 shots in total, meaning that he needs 13 shots to score a goal in league football.

Kane, by comparison, has scored 11 goals in 20 league appearances this season and averages 2.8 shots per game; that’s 5.09 shots for every goal.

Piatek also averages 0.9 key passes per game, which is a feather in his cap, but he is clearly immobile on the ball. He averages just 0.2 dribbles per game.

Of course, Spurs’ hands are somewhat tied.

It is difficult to convince a brilliant striker to join the club merely to play second fiddle to Kane and, thus, they are shopping in a very specific market.

However, Piatek’s stats will hardly be filling the club’s recruitment team with joy.

Spurs should tread carefully before signing a player for such a huge fee who has been in remarkably poor form this season.

Meanwhile, Spurs boss Jose Mourinho has made a huge transfer demand in January.

Crystal Palace fans react as Trabzonspor eye up a move for Mamadou Sakho

Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter to react after Fanatik reported that Trabzonspor are interested in signing Mamadou Sakho this month.

The Turkish outfit – who currently have the 15-goal Alexander Sorloth in their ranks on loan from the Eagles – are believed to be keen on the 29-cap France international with Trabzonspor manager Hüseyin Çimşir eyeing up the centre-back.

Sakho – formerly of Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool – has struggled for game time this season due to a couple of niggling injury issues, as well as a three-match suspension having picked up a straight red card against Bournemouth.

Roy Hodgson also added Gary Cahill to his ranks back in the summer, further bolstering the centre-back department and making Sakho just one of five centre-backs at the former England manager’s disposal – the 72-year-old has Scott Dann, Martin Kelly, James Tomkins, Cahill and Sakho to choose from in the position.

Sakho cost Palace £26m when signing from Liverpool back in 2017, and has since made 63 appearances for the club.

Let’s see how the Eagles supporters on Twitter reacted to Trabzonspor’s interest…

These two supporters were willing the Super Lig side on to take Sakho off Palace’s hands.

Dean said that the 29-year-old is “injured more than he is fit to play” before saying that he’d be a “great player otherwise”.

Another fan named Oscar said that Trabzonspor “can have him” before stating that Palace “never got value” for the defender – ouch.

These two fans also said that Sakho should be sold, but gave different reasons.

Anthony said that the centre-back is on “high wages” and that his “stock will only go down each season”.

Elsewhere, ‘Stov’ said that the Eagles should sell as “we have sufficient cover” at centre-back.

Furthermore, Gordon said that the Turkish side won’t want Sakho anymore when they find out how much he gets paid each week – the Frenchman currently earns £100k-a-week at Selhurst Park.

Lastly, Liam said that he’d let Sakho go “for £20m” before mentioning that an exit would be “such a massive shame” and that the Palace No.12’s injury problems are the only reason behind his thinking.

Wolves don’t need Thomas Lemar after Pedro Neto’s display

It was some comeback from Wolves against Southampton on Saturday.

The Midlands outfit were 2-0 down at half-time against the Saints, but a different team came out after the interval. In the second 45 minutes, they scored three goals, with Pedro Neto netting the first and Raul Jimenez then scoring a brace to grab the spoils for the away side.

The former put in a fantastic display. Aged 19, this was just the fourth Premier League start of his career, and he did not look out of place. Along with the goal he scored, he also made one key pass and won three of the five ground duels he contested. Add on the two fouls he won for his side, and he was clearly a handful for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men.

Call yourself a Wolves expert? How much did each of these January signings cost?

And that performance highlighted why Wolves don’t actually need one of their reported targets, Thomas Lemar. The 24-year-old has struggled to make a real impact at Atletico Madrid since making his move to the Wanda Metropolitan – scoring just three times in 18 months – but his performances at AS Monaco, where he recorded 22 assists in his last two Ligue 1 seasons, show he has real quality.

Indeed, Lemar has been linked with a move to Wolves over the past couple of weeks, but Le10Sport have announced that he will not be departing Los Rojiblancos, having decided to stay with the La Liga club at least until the summer.

Given he also has 22 caps for France, this could be seen as a blow, but with Neto showing so much promise with an energetic display against Southampton, spending significant money on Lemar – Transfermarkt value him at £27m – seems like a waste.

Wolves are yet to make any signings this window, and whilst their attacking cohort probably does need extra depth following the sale of Patrick Cutrone, a big name like Lemar just feels unnecessary, not least because it would likely affect the game-time of a teenage talent who is already showing he can do it in the Premier League.

If Nuno continues to give Neto chances and he continues to make the most of them, then the latest on Lemar could prove to be more of a blessing than a blow for Wolves – a talented player on their hands, and valuable money saved.

Liverpool fans react as they are linked with Philippe Coutinho

It has not gone well for Philippe Coutinho since he left Liverpool for Barcelona in January of 2018.The Blaugrana paid a basic fee of £106m for his services two years ago and, although he managed 21 goals and 17 assists in 76 appearances for the La Liga champions, he found himself loaned to Bayern Munich at the start of the campaign. He has six goals and five assists in the Bundesliga to date this term, yet the Bavarians are not willing to part with €120m (£101.1m) to keep him at the Allianz Arena beyond the end of the season, according to El Desmarque.

The big fat Liverpool quiz of 2019 – how much do you remember about the last year at Anfield?

The report also adds that Liverpool Jurgen Klopp has no intention of taking up the opportunity to sign him either. As you can imagine, there has been plenty of reaction to this on Twitter.

Some fans, it seems, would not be too unhappy to take him back – albeit only on a short-term deal.

In all fairness, Coutinho did well at Anfield, scoring 54 goals and providing 45 assists in 201 matches. After all, Barcelona did pay a huge fee to take him to the Camp Nou.

Others, though, would not be interested in taking him back.

The Brazil international did not leave Liverpool on the best of terms, even reportedly doing very “little” in training before eventually making the move to Spain. It seems some supporters haven’t forgot the way in which he acted during his time on Merseyside.

Some supporters believe that the fee being offered is far too high, and is nowhere near what he is actually worth.

Given he currently has a Transfermarkt valuation of £63m, some of these suggested prices are some way off the mark. However, given his struggles in recent times, the price touted by Barcelona does seem a little too high.

It remains to be seen where the 27-year-old ends up in the future.

Meanwhile, Liverpool eye this Premier League starlet.

West Brom fans laud Filip Krovinovic after victory against Luton

West Bromwich Albion returned to the top of the Championship table by ending their seven-game winless run with victory at the Hawthorns on Saturday afternoon. The Baggies’ title pursuit has taken a massive dent in recent weeks, but in defeating Luton Town 2-0, they are firmly back on track to achieve their goals going into the final few months of the season.Slaven Bilic’s side opened the scoring in the 14th minute through a Donervon Daniels own goal before centre-back Semi Ajayi headed in Matty Phillips’ cross 20 minutes from time to seal all three points.Again, West Brom were without Grady Diangana (injury) and Matheus Pereira (suspension) but in their absence, they managed to pick up a valuable victory, and it has led to praise towards one of the key players who deputised in their place.Filip Krovinovic. Here’s what has been said…

His performance was that good he was singled out by one supporter as being the Man of the Match whilst plenty of others hailed him as being “class.”

The Croatian’s attitude has even been lauded as fantastic, which is encouraging as he’s mainly played a bit-part role this season until recently – starting just 13 games of a possible 30.

Pereira picking up a three-game ban has opened the door for the Benfica loanee to impress.

His recent displays have led to fans calling for the 24-year-old to be signed permanently in the summer.

Per SofaScore, Krovinovic recorded two key passes, created one big chance, and even picked up three interceptions and two tackles in 85 minutes on the pitch.

Now fans are discussing the agonising dilemma that Baggies boss Slaven Bilic faces over team selection now that Pereira is going to be back from his ban as well as the late additions of Callum Robinson and Kamil Grosicki in the transfer window.

There was even one major comparison made between the Croatian and a former Hawthorns legend, Claudio Yacob…

Tottenham Hotspur fans react to Danny Ings’ FA Cup display

It was a rather tumultuous night for Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday evening as Jose Mourinho’s men scraped past an impressive Southampton side at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Even though they were trailing behind the Saints with just under 20 minutes left to play, Spurs clawed their way back into the game and turned it on its head to win 3-2 and ultimately progress into the 5th round against Norwich City.

One player’s performance during the game had many fans talking after the clash.

Interestingly enough, plenty of the Lilywhites faithful were left gushing over Danny Ings, who scored an impressive strike to put the visitors ahead in the 72nd minute, and plenty of them are eager to see him move to north London.

One fan even stated that Southampton are a selling club so Daniel Levy should get the cheque book and seal the deal for the 27-year-old forward.

After all, he has already scored 17 goals in all competitions this term…

But as fate would have it, there were actually reports back in 2015 stating that Spurs tried to sign Ings when he was leaving Burnley but he ended up going to Liverpool instead.

Some fans harked back to the time when their club had a chance of signing him up but ultimately failed to do so.

One fan stated that they should’ve paid whatever was needed to secure his signature.

Finally, there was one fan who would simply sign the prolific striker to stop him from scoring goals against them. So far, he has a tally of three goals and one assist in a total of seven games played against Spurs.

He seems to like them a lot…

Crystal Palace fans react as Kevin Gonzalez’s agent ‘believes’ he will sign a contract

Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter to react after the agent of academy star Kevin Gonzalez – Joao Santos – revealed that he believes his client will sign a professional contract with the Eagles.

Gonzalez – who was named Palace Academy Player of the Year in 2017 – has been compared to Brazil international and former Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho by Santos, who also stated that the south Londoners are “focusing” on his client for the future.

Santos told Tutto Mercato Web: “The Crystal Palace is focusing on him for the future. He’s a Coutinho guy. I believe he will sign a professional contract with the English club. He is a very talented player with an important future.”

The agent said nothing more to the Italian news outlet about the youngster, although The Evening Standard also reported the quotes while adding their own nuggets of information.

They reveal that Gonzalez is yet to have signed a professional contract with Crystal Palace, although the teenager is ‘set to commit his long-term future’ to the club in what should be encouraging news for the Eagles, given how highly-rated he is.

Gonzalez is eligible to play for both England and Colombia, and looks to be a promising prospect if his agent’s comments are anything to go by.

Let’s see how the Crystal Palace fans reacted to Santos’ comments…

To kick off the reaction, these two supporters both believe that Roy Hodgson could potentially be a hindrance in Gonzalez’s development.

Luke said that the club needs “a different manager who actually starts youngsters first” – last time out against Sheffield United, the 72-year-old fielded Crystal Palace’s oldest ever Premier League starting XI at an average age of 30 years and 94 days.

@ZacCPFC then said that he “can’t wait for” Gonzalez to be wasted out wide if Hodgson is still in charge when he breaks into the first-team.

Elsewhere, these two supporters expressed pessimism over Gonzalez’s chances of flourishing at Selhurst Park.

Steve Richardson said that the midfielder will “be off like Hungbo in the summer” – referencing Crystal Palace’s decision to part ways with Joseph Hungbo, who joined Watford and has since impressed with 12 goals from the wing in the first-half of the 2019/20 campaign for the U23’s.

Bobby Lock then brought another former academy star into the conversation, saying how he “can’t wait” to see Gonzalez break into the first-team before being sold, just like James Daly – the striker recently left to join Bristol Rovers after five-and-a-half years at the club.

Lastly, these two fans were sceptical over Santos’ comments and felt that a bit of bias may be present.

Liverpool’s predicted XI against Norwich

Liverpool return to action in the Premier League this week following their two-week winter break.

Their last match was a 1-0 win against Shrewsbury in the FA Cup fourth-round replay. After Jurgen Klopp’s decision to respect that pause from the action for his senior players and himself, Neil Critchley and the club’s U23 players were tasked with getting the team through to the next round.

Can you name the result these iconic Liverpool images belong to? Give it a go now…

As such, we will likely see Klopp make 11 changes to the side that beat Salop. But who will take to the field? Here, we try to predict his starting XI against the Canaries.

In goal, Alisson will return to the side to replace Caoimhin Kelleher. That is no surprise – the Brazil international is currently tied with Sheffield United’s Dean Henderson in the race for the Golden Glove, and is the best goalkeeper on the planet – at least according to the Yachine Trophy.

The defence should see Andrew Robertson, Joe Gomez, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold line-up. That is a back four that has conceded just one goal in their last nine league games, and therefore keeping eight clean sheets along the way. Klopp does at least have back-up options at centre-back to consider, though, with Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip having now returned from injury.

In midfield, Fabinho should take up a defensive midfield role. Jordan Henderson had done well in that position as the 26-year-old was absent – the Reds conceded just one goal during his time there – but the former AS Monaco man started the Reds’ 4-0 victory against Southampton. That will see the captain take up a role slightly further forward, with Georginio Wijnaldum alongside him.

Up front, Sadio Mane should come back into the side. The Senegal international missed the last two matches through injury in the top flight, but he is now expected to be a part of his boss’ plans for the match at Carrow Road. Alongside him, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino are expected to start.

Meanwhile, Liverpool fans react to Philippe Coutinho’s latest comments.

Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish with Neymar and Thomas Muller

Jack Grealish has been placed in the world-class category by Football Critic and their complex algorithm of statistics.

On the chalkboard

The football website has created an algorithm that measures the level of players in their last 20 matches, which takes into account the standard they are playing at and the performances they put in, with statistics holding varying weights for players in different positions.

As well as looking at this statistically, there are also bonuses awarded by their journalists for especially impressive performances, all coming together to create a score out of 99.

For the attacking midfield category, Villa talisman Grealish has placed well, falling into the “world-class’ bracket. He’s been awarded a score of 92, which is only exceeded by Neymar and Thomas Muller, who have recorded 99 and 98 respectively.

This technically makes him touted by them as the third-best player in his position in world football, being placed directly above Pablo Sarabia, Marco Reus, Alejandro Gomez, Dele Alli, Iker Muniain and Leon Goretzka.

Big performances

Putting him among such esteemed company is an encouraging sign of how impressive he has been in a Villa shirt, and it can be suggested that it is fully deserved.

He has made 26 starts across the Premier League and Carabao Cup, recording a very impressive nine goals and eight assists.

Of the league goals scored, two of his seven have been decisive, while one was the first of the game and he also got two equalisers.

Calling Premier League experts ONLY: Which year were these top flight clubs formed?

He is effective in other areas of the pitch as well, completing 84% of his passes, with 21.6 of his 40.7 passes per game coming in the opposition third – highlighting how progressive he is in his play.

That is also supported by the fact that he has completed 2.4 dribbles per game and put in 3.7 crosses.

All of the above shows why he is such an important player for Villa and their survival hopes, while the aforementioned algorithm also indicates that he is a special talent outside the realms of Villa Park.

Meanwhile, Villa continued a concerning trend during the loss against Tottenham Hotspur.
