PL25: Aleksandr Kolarov gives Manchester City a vital lesson

Few home draws against teams like Sunderland are memorable and meaningful to Premier League title-winning teams in the year that they lift the trophy. But for Manchester City in 2011/12, when they won their first Premier League title on goal difference, every point is crucial.

Some moments of fine margins were more crucial than others that season. Sergio Aguero’s injury time goal against Queens Park Rangers is the most memorable, but without Vincent Kompany’s header against Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium in late April. Then again, when you win the title without a point to spare, you can argue with some legitimacy that every point was vital.

In order to win the league, City had to win their final six games. After losing to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in early April it looked as if the title race was up, but it was the game before that north London defeat where City showed the fighting spirit which was epitomised so fittingly by their last-gasp winner.

Of their 19 home games that season, City won 18 of them, but finding themselves quite inexplicably 3-1 down at half time at home to Sunderland was yet another time when Roberto Mancini’s side showed they were always willing to fight until the very end.

City fans didn’t need long memories to remember a time when, just four months earlier, City went to the Stadium of Light and lost to a 93rd-minute Ji Dong-Won winner. That game was the very definition of the footballing cliche ‘one-way traffic’, but thanks to the comeback at the Etihad at the end of March, that defeat was just a blip along the way, not the last-minute shock that cost them the title. Maybe that’s why the fightback against Sunderland was so important, even though the Blues went on to lose the next game at Arsenal: they knew they could keep fighting until the end of games, and they were spurred on by the experience.

In that regard, perhaps Aleksandr Kolarov’s greatest contribution to Manchester City in his time at the club is the goal that drew the game and earned a point – preserving his team’s unbeaten home record in the process.

He almost scored at the start of the second half with the score at 3-1 to the Black Cats. A free-kick Kolarov won himself on the edge of the Sunderland box was perhaps more notable for the fact that Mario Balotelli threw a strop when he wasn’t allowed to take it, but it was the Serbian left-back who strode up and could only his the side-netting with a curling effort.

It was that Balotelli / Kolarov duo who would have the rest of the say in the game. After cutting inside from the left, the Italian curled the ball past Simon Mignolet in the Sunderland goal to give City some hope with just five minutes left. And as the City fans who had upped to leave early were scrambling back to their seats for the grand finale, the ball broke to Kolarov on the left again.

Pinball in the box is often a hallmark of the snapshot from distance. This time, though, the chaos saw the ball come out to David Pizarro; the calm midfield technician who is all but forgotten from that title-winning team, but who played an important part nonetheless thanks to his intelligence and experience. The Chilean didn’t panic amid the fever and laid it off pleasingly to Kolarov who knew instantly what he wanted to do as he lined up to shoot across the goalkeeper.

It may not have been one of his more sumptuous strikes. The Serbian’s left foot is often one of football’s little joys, but on this occasion it was functional rather than spectacular. It was a daisy cutter that seemed to catch everyone out. As the play moved further and further to the left, Sunderland were left expecting City to aim to cross the ball in from the far side, but instead, Kolarov’s strike saw the ball arrow its way into the far corner, past a wrong-footed Mignolet.

City would go on to lose one more game. It wasn’t an immediate catalyst for the comeback that brought them from eight points behind Manchester United to winning the title in the final minute of the final game, but it did show that this was a team who weren’t going to give up, even when they were so far behind.

Indeed, Sunderland would yet play another small role in the City’s destiny, as their 2-0 defeat at home to Manchester United saw the Red Devils greet the final whistle at the Stadium of Light as champions of England once again. But as news began to filter through that the never-say-die City had pulled off the miracle, the scenes of heartbreak in Sunderland were almost as iconic as those of joy in east Manchester.

But none of them could have happened without an Aleks Kolarov strike to rescue a point against Sunderland weeks earlier. It taught the blue half of Manchester a lesson they won’t forget: every point is vital, and so too is every goal.

Pundit advises Shaw to join Tottenham Hotspur

Luke Shaw’s Manchester United future has been a talking point for some time due to his lack of game time under manager Jose Mourinho.

Last season, the Portuguese coach publicly questioned the left-back’s attitude and commitment, as well as his fitness issues.

Since breaking his leg in two places in September 2015, Shaw has struggled to regain form.

The England international suffered another injury blow towards the end of last season, and even though he is fully fit now, the 22-year-old has made just two Carabao Cup appearances.

Shaw has not played since the end of October and now questions are being asked about his long-term future at Old Trafford.

Tottenham Hotspur have been touted as potential suitors, mainly due to the left-back’s link to manager Mauricio Pochettino, whom he played under at Southampton.

Football pundit Andy Townsend believes that a move would benefit Shaw’s career.

When asked if Tottenham was a viable option on Sky Sports’ The Debate, the former Chelsea midfielder said:

“Yes he should consider a pay cut. At Luke’s age, he has to contemplate that to get regular football. He can’t stay at United forever and not get a game. Money cannot be his God at this stage of his life.”

Man United fans desperate for De Gea to sign lifetime deal

Manchester United have a faulty fax machine to thank for preventing Real Madrid from signing David de Gea in the summer of 2015.

De Gea came within minutes of making the move to the Bernabeu, but the deal broke down at the final moment, and the rest is history.

The 27-year-old continues to amaze with his performances between the sticks, and he was again in stunning form against Arsenal at the weekend.

It would be fair to say that a number of De Gea’s saves against Arsenal were routine, but he made a quite staggering double stop to deny Alexandre Lacazette and Alexis Sanchez in the second period of his team’s 3-1 win.

Social media has been full of praise for De Gea over the last 48 hours, and that was also the case on Monday when United posted an image of the Spain international from the clash against Arsenal.

If it were up to the United supporters, De Gea, who is valued at £36m by transfermarkt.co.uk, would stay at the club for life. Well, at least until he hangs up his gloves, which is some way off yet.

In Focus: Securing young Scottish talent is a key transfer priority for Celtic

As reported by The Daily Mail, Celtic are interested in signing Scottish youngsters Lewis Morgan and Jack Hendry this January from St Mirren and Dundee.

What’s the story?

The upcoming transfer window is an important one for Celtic. Their treble-winning squad is a talented one but adding talent in key positions could inject a freshness back into their game and allow them to hit their full potential.

The Daily Mail report that two players on Brendan Rodgers’ radar are Lewis Morgan and Jack Hendry. They say the duo were both in attendance during the Hoops’ defeat to Anderlecht this week.

Left winger Morgan, who is said to be a £500,000 target for clubs like Nottingham Forest has been in lethal form for the Buddies this term, while defender Jack Hendry, who The Mail report is interesting English Premier League sides also, has been a stand-out for the Dees.

Who are they?

Lewis Morgan isn’t quite a household name in Scotland yet, but is definitely making a name for himself at high-flying St Mirren, who find themselves in second place in the Scottish Championship after 15 matches as they look to make a return to the top-flight.

The 21-year-old attacking midfielder has played a massive part in that, scoring 10 goals for his side in all competitions, following up on his return of nine goals and six assists last term. He’s played his way into the Scotland U21 set-up and is currently one of the brightest prospects at his age level in the country.

Jack Hendry returned to Scottish football this season after moving to Wigan Athletic from Partick Thistle in 2015. The 22-year-old defender impressed for Dundee during the Hoops’ 1-0 victory against them in October with Brendan Rodgers singling him out for special praise, exclaiming that he ‘looks a talent’.

Adding the best young Scottish talent to their squad is a key aim for Celtic, with the benefit of working under Rodgers and his staff almost sure to bring on their game if they apply themselves.

Are they the next wave of Scottish youngsters to make an impression on the Bhoys?

England and the 2018 World Cup: Jack Wilshere meets Football FanCast

Jack Wilshere has thrown his support behind England’s national team and praised the performances of its Tottenham Hotspur stars. The 26-year-old was in contention for a spot in Gareth Southgate’s 23-man World Cup squad but narrowly missed out with England manager opting to bring Ruben Loftus-Cheek instead.

They’re playing with confidence, no fear and they all want to play for each other,” Wilshere told Football FanCast, just as the second half of England vs Colombia got underway at the William Hill Arms.

You’ve got to take it game-by-game of course, but if we get through this we’ve got Sweden next, so why not go all the way?

As a former Arsenal player and lifelong Gunners fan, Jack could have been forgiven for not enjoying the heavy Tottenham presence in the team. He first joined the Gunners when he was just nine years old and remained with the club right up until this summer. But still, he was quick to praise his former arch-rivals.

I’m a big fan of [Harry] Kane,” Wilshere said. “They’re all doing really well, but he’s probably the most important player we’ve got. He scores goals which is the hardest thing to do and as long as he keeps it going I’m happy.

Kane is currently the tournament’s top scorer with six goals, whilst club-mate Kieran Trippier has been winning plaudits thanks to some outstanding displays at right wing-back. But the Tottenham boys are not the only players who have caught Jack’s eye.

The way the Three Lions have defended in Southgate’s 3-4-3 system has also impressed him, with one player, in particular, standing out.

I really like the way John Stones is playing. Not many players can play out as well as he does, especially under pressure in the position that he plays. He’s in that central position, he builds up the play and he’s playing really well.

“We’ve got three defenders who can play out and it gives the midfield more security knowing you have three at the back and it’s working well.”

Away from England, the midfielder has been impressed with how some of the less fancied sides have handled themselves this summer. The likes of Sweden, Japan, Mexico and hosts Russia have all proven to be tricky opponents for some of the world’s most star-studded teams. He says that it is these team performances that have surprised and stood out to him rather than any individual player.

Obviously everyone knows about France and the players that they have. But it’s the lower teams that are making a name for themselves and making themselves difficult to play against. So, I suppose it’s not really an individual performance but more from the team.

Wilshere is currently without a club having decided against signing a new contract with Arsenal after new manager Unai Emery said he could not promise the midfielder game time. There has been talk of a move abroad but for now, his next destination remains a mystery.

England will take on Sweden for a place in the World Cup semi-finals on Saturday at 3 pm.

Newcastle fans annoyed by snag in Kenedy deal

Newcastle fans are delighted about the capture of Kenedy on loan from Chelsea, but quite a few fans have found a snag to worry about.

Newcastle finally gave the fans what they wanted this week, wrapping up a one-year loan deal for Chelsea’s Kenedy.

The feisty Brazilian was excellent during his loan spell on Tyneside last season, alongside Martin Dubravka who joined permanently earlier this summer.

The Magpies must now switch their attention to signing a new goalscorer, with Dwight Gayle struggling for form and Aleksandar Mitrovic expected to leave the club.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”270847″ player=”12034″ title=”England’s 1966 World Cup Omens”]

While securing Kenedy without having to pay a transfer fee is great business in the short term, fans are worried that it’s just delaying the inevitable, as they’ll be right back in the same position next summer.

There are no reports to suggest there is a clause to make the deal permanent at the end of the loan, and fans are all bringing it up on Twitter.

You can certainly understand fans’ frustrations, as Mike Ashley loves to bargain hunt, and another successful loan spell for the Brazilian will only up the asking price next summer, pushing him further out of reach.

You can find some of the best reactions down below, where more than a few fans have taken issue with the terms of the deal…

Ginter and Everton are a match made in transfer heaven

Everton fans are desperate to see a new centre-back arrive at Goodison Park this summer.

The Toffees needed to address their defensive problems last summer and opted to sign Michael Keane from Burnley for £25m. Despite Keane’s first season on Merseyside being one to forget, the Englishman needs a better centre-back partner in order to excel in a blue shirt.

Phil Jagielka is approaching the end of his career, and his performances are declining as a result. With Ashley Williams failing to impress and Ramiro Funes Mori leaving the club, Everton need to sign a new centre-back this summer. New boss Marco Silva should look to the Bundesliga to solve his problems.

The ideal partner for Keane could be Borussia Monchengladbach ace – Matthias Ginter. Valued at £22.5m according to Transfermarkt, the 24-year-old joined the club from Borussia Dortmund last summer and was a key player for his new side. He made 34 appearances in the Bundesliga last year, and his market value increased as a result.

Ginter has all the attributes to be a success in the Premier League. The German is great on the ball and has the passing range of a midfielder. Last season, he retained a higher pass completion average (87%) than Everton’s entire squad (WhoScored). He is also a huge threat from set-pieces, Ginter was second only to Naldo in goals scored by defenders last year.

Still only 24-years-old, the Germany international is still improving. Everton could land one of the signings of the summer by bringing him to England.

Everton fans, thoughts?

Gayle for Rondon would be great business for West Brom

According to the Daily Mail, West Brom and Newcastle United are discussing a player swap deal that would see Salomon Rondon and Dwight Gayle exchange places between the clubs.

Newcastle’s interest in signing Rondon this summer has been no secret for a while now, yet negotiations with West Brom had appeared to have reached an impasse.

A swap deal, that would see Rondon depart the Baggies, as Gayle arrives at the Hawthorns to take his place, could be the way forward that sees everyone come out happy.

Darren Moore can’t afford to lose any more members of his first team squad this summer without replacements being sourced immediately, so a swap deal would work for him.

In fact, this whole deal could work out better for West Brom than it might for Newcastle.

The Breakdown

Rondon was West Brom’s joint top scorer last season with 7 Premier League strikes, but that wasn’t enough to prevent his side getting relegated. Meanwhile, Gayle found the net 6 times for the Magpies as Rafa Benitez masterminded his side to an impressive 10th placed finish.

Newcastle are after a target man, and Rondon fits the bill there. The Venezuelan is also probably a superior finisher to Gayle, but he is not going to take Newcastle to the next level, and there are better options for them out there.

Gayle’s arrival at the Hawthorns would be great news for Baggies fans though. The 28-year-old has already proven himself capable of being prolific in the second tier, having netted 23 times during Newcastle’s title-winning campaign of 2016/17. In doing so, Gayle became the first player since Alan Shearer in 2003/04 to score 20+ league goals for Newcastle in a single season.

Gayle’s link up play would also help to get the best out of some of the other attacking talents at Darren Moore’s disposal.

Transfermarkt value Gayle at £9 million, and whilst Transfermarkt consider Rondon to be worth £11.7 million, if this swap deal goes through then West Brom have likely gotten the better end of the bargain.

Manchester United should use Herrera as a makeweight for Thiago

According to the Independent, Manchester United are keen on bringing Bayern Munich’s Thiago Alcantara to Old Trafford this summer.

Jose Mourinho has already set about reinforcing his midfield options this summer with the signing of the Brazilian, Fred, but could yet bolster his ranks further with the addition of Thiago.

Since joining the German giants in 2013, Thiago has cemented his reputation as one of the finest deep-lying playmakers currently plying his trade in Europe. Despite the Spaniard’s obvious quality, a report in The Sun suggests that Bayern could be open to selling the midfielder this summer.

Many top clubs in Europe will be interested in the 27-year-old’s signature if it does become available during this transfer window. Manchester United should take action now to put themselves at the front of that queue.

The Breakdown

One way that the Red Devils could try and force a deal here is by offering Ander Herrera, plus cash, in exchange for Thiago.

Herrera has been a wonderful servant to United since his arrival in 2014, and does a good job of keeping things ticking over in the centre of the park. However, he is not of Thiago’s standard, and if Mourinho is serious about making his side genuine title challengers again, then it is the likes of Herrera he must find upgrades for.

Transfermarkt value Thiago at £54 million, so he won’t come cheap. Considering Herrera’s own Transfermarkt rating of £27 million though, the 28-year-old could go a long way as a makeweight towards making this swap deal happen.

For all of Herrera’s industry and tidiness in possession, he lacks the creative ingenuity of Thiago. The Bayern Munich man would be able to replicate Herrera’s role within Mourinho’s set up, but would also bring a higher level of technical ability, productivity and cutting edge to the midfield.

This swap deal would be an ambitious plan for United to put into action, but if came off it could make United contenders again.

Sealing Vida deal could prove to be the best £22m Liverpool have spent in many a year

According to a recent report from A Spor, Liverpool have agreed a contract with centre back Domagoj Vida, although have yet to meet the defender’s £22 million price-tag. The 29-year-old’s future at Turkish giants Besiktas has been subject of speculation in the last few weeks as a result of his excellent World Cup campaign, in which the Croatia international helped his country reach the showpiece in Russia, although they went down 4-2 to France in Moscow earlier this month.

Nonetheless, Vida’s efforts have certainly attracted much attention including from Liverpool and manager Jurgen Klopp, and were they to indeed seal a £22 million deal for the 29-year-old, it could prove to be the best £22 million the Reds have spent in many a year.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, the Merseyside giants deserve great credit for the business they have already conducted in the summer window to date, with almost all signings made to help bolster areas of the Reds squad that seemed in need of improvement if they are to fight for the Premier League title.

Alisson’s arrival is arguably the most important given Loris Karius’ struggles between the sticks at the rear end of last season, while Fabinho and Naby Keita will improve the midfield ranks – plus the addition of Xherdan Shaqiri to strengthen the attacking department, and the Reds have acted wisely so far.

And it would be just as wise if Klopp’s side spent a relatively modest £22 million on Vida, as the centre back department still remains an area of concern to some people despite Virgil van Dijk’s arrival in January.

Yes, the Dutchman’s addition has no doubt helped solidify and thus strengthen the Reds backline, yet there remains some concerns over the season-long capabilities of Dejan Lovren, Joel Matip, and Ragnar Klavan, as all three made errors last time round.

And to win the Premier League title, one needs a formidable centre back partnership, and they could well get that with van Dijk and Croatia’s Vida.

The 29-year-old enjoyed an outstanding World Cup campaign in appearing in six of Croatia’s seven matches to reach the final, and alongside earning a move to Besiktas from Dynamo Kiev back in January, it’s clear that the defender is beginning to catch the eye with several impressive performances.

Yes, he is 29 and a move wouldn’t represent an overly long-term purchase, but that is why £22 million represents good value for money, especially for a club that have so far spent over £150 million in the summer window – Vida’s addition would be arguably just as important as most of the others.

Thus, were the Reds to indeed meet the £22 million valuation for the defender, it could well be the best £22 million they have spent in recent years.
