Forget Isak: Liverpool chase £78m star who’s a bigger talent than Barcola

Remarkably, Liverpool’s incredible summer of spending has yet to leave Arne Slot’s squad with an air of completeness.

Particularly, Virgil van Dijk’s central defence is rather light, especially now that Joe Gomez has suffered a minor Achilles injury following the £35m sale of Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen.

Then turn your head toward the frontline. The incredible additions of rising superstars such as Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike suggest that Liverpool are shaping up to have one of the deadliest frontlines in the game (if they didn’t already).

Florian Wirtz celebrates scoring his first Liverpool goal.

However, Luis Diaz left for Bayern Munich last month, and now, Darwin Nunez is on the verge of completing a permanent transfer to Al Hilal in the Saudi Pro League.

With Federico Chiesa and Harvey Elliott both mooted to be off, it’s not desirable but imperative that Liverpool add another attacker to their mix, and FSG appear to have one or two show-stopping names in mind.

Liverpool chasing another forward

The dream transfer target is, of course, Alexander Isak. You might have heard that Liverpool are interested in signing the Newcastle United striker, and rumour has it he’s rather keen on the journey toward Anfield too.

Unfortunately, Newcastle’s transfer market has been a pitiful thing, with Eddie Howe no doubt feeling hot under the collar. Any number of top targets have been missed on Tyneside, and with Benjamin Sesko now hoping to sign for Manchester United, Isak’s sale is less certain, for a reliable replacement must be signed, else he will not leave.

Last month’s initial £69m signing of Hugo Ekitike has tempered Liverpool’s need for the Premier League superstar, but it would still be a stunning signing.

However, sporting director Richard Hughes is a man of deep nous, and he hasn’t placed all his eggs in one basket. Liverpool are emerging as contenders for Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola, though completing a summer deal will be difficult indeed.

If neither move comes to fruition, there’s another option waiting in the wings who might be perfect for Slot’s system.

Liverpool in for for Barcola upgrade

According to L’Equipe, Liverpool are in the race to sign Real Madrid winger Rodrygo, who has also attracted interest from Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.

Rodrygo, 24, has been anticipated to leave the Santiago Bernabeu this summer, having struggled for form last year and slid down the early pecking order as the Xabi Alonso era shapes up.

Real Madrid's Rodrygo

Liverpool’s interest in Barcola might have just become public, but their admiration for Rodrygo also has substance, and the South American’s suspected price tag has been reported to fall into the region of £78m.

Why Liverpool want to sign Rodrygo

Rodrygo came under fire for his performances with Los Blancos last season. Such is his level; such are the expectations at Real Madrid.

His 25-goal contribution return still matched that of Diaz and Cody Gakpo at Liverpool, perhaps illustrating the calibre of forward Slot would add to his ranks, on par with the Reds crop yet capable of so much more.

Rodrygo's Real Madrid career (timeless)

And given that he would likely play as a left-sided forward, a rare experience in recent years at Real Madrid, Rodrygo’s desire to move to Anfield, should he move at all, is understandable, for he notched six goals and six assists from only 12 games as a left winger last year.

Even though Real Madrid’s selfless superstar had been played out of position for the majority of the recent season, he still managed to impress, with former teammate Luka Modric even claiming he is one of the club’s “world-class superstars.”

When collating his seasonal data with Barcola’s, you perhaps begin to see that his underlying quality suggests he would rise to a higher level than Barcola could.

There’s no denying that Barcola has enjoyed the better season, winning the quadruple with PSG and notching 42 goal contributions across all competitions.

But when digging deeper, it becomes clear that Rodrygo is the superior player of the two, and given that they both fall into a similar financial ballpark, is the one Liverpool must push for.

For example, the French winger is regarded as a silky, high-speed dribbler, but he averaged only one dribble per match in Ligue 1 last year and, more concerningly, at a success rate of just 27%, as per Sofascore.

In fact, FBref also record that he ranked among the bottom 4% of attacking midfielders and wingers across all of Europe last season for take-on success rate, underscoring the amount of failed efforts to drive the ball forward.

That’s not to negate his quality; Barcola has just played an instrumental role in a Champions League-winning campaign after all. However, Rodrygo knows his way around Europe’s elite competition, a two-time champion and a force to be reckoned with at the business end too.

Barcola, moreover, has yet to polish his shooting boots. Though he scored 17 goals across PSG’s Ligue 1 and Champions League campaigns, he also missed a whopping 33 big chances.

Conversely, Rodrygo only missed three big chances, albeit he also netted just 11 times across his disappointing season. Still, that makes a strong comment on his prolific ability.

When he’s on his A-game, the Brazil international is “unstoppable”, so says Madrid columnist Kiyan Sobhani.

Paris St Germain's BradleyBarcola

Ultimately, the fact that Liverpool fans are mulling over whether they fancy Barcola or Rodrygo as potential alternatives to Isak, having already signed Wirtz, Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Giorgi Mamardashvili, illustrates just how far this club has come.

The Premier League champions are in the most enviable of positions, but if given the pick of the bunch, Hughes might want to move for Rodrygo over Barcola.

Maxwell sets up Australia win in seven-over thrash

Pakistan slumped to 24 for six in the first four overs before finishing with 64 for nine

It was a shortened game at the Gabba, and Australia made short work of it. After persistent rain and lightning delayed the start by nearly three hours and reduced the game to a seven-over shootout, Australia inflicted a crushing 29-run defeat upon Pakistan. Glenn Maxwell, who struggled in the preceding ODI series, blasted his way through the innings with 43 off 19, before Pakistan slumped to 24 for six in the first four overs before finishing with 64 for nine.Mohammad Rizwan called correctly at the toss and unsurprisingly put Australia in. But the hosts had a clarity of purpose from the outset, looking to hit a boundary off every ball, aware that wickets didn’t really matter as much. Shaheen Shah Afridi was plundered for 16 off his first over to set the tone, and though Haris Rauf’s tight first over had Maxwell flailing, the tide would turn soon.Maxwell deployed the reverse slog expertly, using the bowlers’ pace to get his shots away. Afridi was spectacularly dismissed over third man for six, before he ripped into Rauf, his ODI tormentor, smashing 19 off his second over. When he holed out to Abbas Afridi, Tim David and Marcus Stoinis picked up the baton, with Stoinis’ 20 off Naseem in the final over seeing Australia surge to 93.Xavier Bartlett stuck twice in his first over back for Australia•Getty Images

Pakistan began the innings with Sahibzada Farhan biffing two boundaries off the first two balls, but that’s as good as the chase got for the visitors. Spencer Johnson got him two balls later. It began a remarkable passage of play where five wickets fell in 12 balls for eight runs. Mohammad Rizwan sliced Xavier Bartlett to backward point for a duck, and Usman Khan sent one down deep third man’s throat later in the over.Babar Azam – who came in at number three – miscued a half-volley down to long-off off Nathan Ellis’ first ball, with Irfan Khan joining him two balls later. When Salman Ali Agha, debutant and vice-captain, skied one off Ellis, Pakistan were staring down the barrel of an enormous defeat, despite the heavily curtailed nature of the game. But Pakistan managed to restore some respectability to the scoreline in the final three overs, primarily when Haseebullah Khan and Abbas managed 18 off the fifth over. Wickets would continue to fall, though, with Ellis snaring Haseebullah for his third wicket. When Adam Zampa came in to bowl the final over, Shaheen managed to smear one over long-on for six, but in an innings characterised by clumps of wickets falling quickly, that Zampa signed off with consecutive wickets of his final two balls was a fitting end.

Big Danilo upgrade: Rangers transfer target told he'd "ruin riot" at Ibrox

It is fair to say that Glasgow Rangers did not kick off the 2025/26 Scottish Premiership campaign in the way that they wanted to at Fir Park on Saturday.

The Ibrox giants faced Motherwell away from home in Russell Martin’s first league game in charge of the club, and failed to pick up all three points.

A late equaliser from Emmanuel Longelo, after captain James Tavernier had given the Gers the lead in the first half, secured a point for the home side, in a game which left the Light Blues boss seething.

Extraordinarily, Martin told some of his players to “drop their egos” and accused unnamed players of doing what they wanted to do and jogging around, rather than putting in maximum effort and listening to the instructions that they were given, in his post-match interview.

Only the Rangers boss will know exactly who he was referencing with his rather scathing comments, but anyone who watched the match will be able to identify the players who were not up to it from a quality perspective.

Why Rangers need to drop Danilo

Brazilian centre-forward Danilo was one of the Gers players who did not do enough on the pitch to suggest that he deserves to keep his place in the starting XI.

Partially due to fitness issues for Cyriel Dessers and Hamza Igamane, the former Feyenoord attacker has started all three of the club’s games this season, lining up for both legs against Panathinaikos and the draw with Motherwell.

Glasgow Rangers striker Danilo.

Danilo, who scored five goals in 24 appearances in all competitions during the 2024/25 campaign, did not provide a single goal or assist in any of those three matches for the Gers.

Igamane and Dessers not being fully fit to start provided the 24-year-old attacker with a huge opportunity to show Martin that he has what it takes to be a key player this season, but he failed to do so.

As you can see in the table above, Danilo offered very little threat across the three matches, with just one shot on target and zero ‘big chances’ created.

After the draw with Motherwell, former Rangers striker Kris Boyd said that the Brazilian is “not working” as the sole number nine and that Dessers should start.

The Light Blues could, though, sign a new centre-forward to start over both of them, and there is one reported target who is now being told that he would be a huge success at Ibrox.

Rangers transfer target tipped to run riot at Ibrox

Rangers have been linked with an interest in signing free agent number nine Jamie Vardy, who left Leicester City when his contract expired at the end of last season.

Now, former Gers defender David Robinson has told the former England international that he would “run riot” in Glasgow if he made the move to the Scottish giants this summer.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Robinson told Ibrox News: “I think he would run riot in Scotland, to be honest. I think the whole club, it would change everything.

“He’s still got the pace about him. No offence to the other teams in Scotland, he would cause them so many problems because he plays on the shoulder and runs in behind. If Rangers played a little more direct with Vardy, he would make that difference.”

It remains to be seen whether or not the experienced marksman wants to make the move to Ibrox, but he could come in as a big upgrade on Danilo if he does.

Why Rangers should sign Jamie Vardy

As Robinson said, Vardy is still an incredibly mobile player who will cause defenders constant problems with his running and his physicality, as shown by his performances in the Premier League last year.

Extraordinarily, the 38-year-old star plundered nine goals and four assists in the English top-flight for Leicester, despite playing in a side that were relegated from the division.

The former Premier League champion started 35 times and showcased his physical qualities by winning 48% of his ground duels and 48% of his aerial battles for the Foxes.

Meanwhile, Danilo lost 61% of his ground duels and 71% of his aerial duels across 23 appearances in the Premiership for Rangers in the 2024/25 campaign, which suggests that he is a liability to the team out of possession.

As you can see in the table above, Vardy has held his own in duels in both the Championship and the Premier League over the past two seasons, despite his age, which suggests that he would be a big upgrade on Danilo in terms of what the striker offers to the team as a physical presence.

The English icon could also come in at Ibrox as a big upgrade on Danilo because of the goal threat that he can provide in the number nine position.

Vardy has scored 27 league goals in the last two seasons. Meanwhile, the Brazilian attacker has scored nine goals in the Premiership for Rangers in that time.

These statistics suggest that the 38-year-old marksman could be more likely to make a big impact at the top end of the pitch over the course of the season for Martin, which is why he could be a fantastic addition to the squad.

End the Aarons experiment: Rangers make contact to sign "offensive" star

Rangers are reportedly interested in a deal to sign a star who could end the Max Aarons experiment.

It is now down to the club to make a move for the English star, though, and to convince him to make the switch to Ibrox to “run riot” as a big upgrade on Danilo.

It was the bowlers who set the win up for Victoria with paceman Fergus O’Neill taking six for the match and spinner Todd Murphy chiming in with four first-innings wickets to help dismiss Western Australia for 167.
