Their answer to Odegaard: Spurs favourites to land "sublime" England ace

This time next week, Tottenham Hotspur will be on their way to Stamford Bridge to try and get revenge on Chelsea for their defeat earlier in the season.

Unfortunately, even if Ange Postecoglou and Co are able to pick up three points in West London, it won’t have much of an impact on their domestic campaign, as they currently sit in 14th place in the Premier League, 14 points off the top five.

So, the club’s focus will likely be on their Europa League campaign and preparations for what has to be a massive summer transfer window to ensure next year is more successful.

Tottenham Hotspur manager AngePostecogloubefore the match

Fortunately, the club appear to be in pole position to secure the services of an England international who could end up being Postecoglou’s own Martin Odegaard.

Tottenham's transfer targets

In his first two summers in the hot seat, Postecoglou has spent quite a bit of money on building his team.

For example, Micky van de Ven cost £43m, James Maddison was £40m, Brennan Johnson was £47.5m, and Dominic Solanke was a club-record £65m from Bournemouth.

So, while Daniel Levy and Co are likely to go big again this summer, it’s also not too surprising to see several free agents touted for moves to N17, like Jonathan David from LOSC Lille, Jonathan Tah from Bayer Leverkusen, and now England International Angel Gomes.

According to a recent report by journalist Dean Jones, the North Londoners are the team that have been chasing the Lille star for the longest time and are now “the most likely club” to secure his services in the summer.

England'sAngelGomesin action

In fact, Jones explains that Tottenham were so keen to bring him to the capital earlier this season, that they were willing to pay a fee for him in January.

However, as nothing materialised then, they’ll be able to get him on a free once his £11k-per-week contract expires in the summer.

Levy and Co will likely have to pay a signing-on fee of some kind and offer him a serious pay rise, but it’d all be worth it as not only would he add some real quality to the midfield, but he’s also been compared to Odegaard.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

How Gomes compares to Odegaard

So, Odegaard might not be the most popular of players around N17 – understandably so – and he’s not having the best of campaigns either, but when it comes down to it, he’s an incredibly talented player.

For example, he won his second successive Player of the Year Award at Arsenal last season. The season before, he racked up a tally of 22 goal involvements in 45 games, and to top it all off, he’s a captain at club and national level.

In all, he’s not a bad player to be linked to, but where has this comparison between the Norwegian and Gomes come from?

It primarily stems from FBref, which looks at players in similar positions across Europe’s top five leagues, the Champions League and Europa League, then creates a list of the ten most comparable players for each one, and, in this instance, has concluded that the Gunners ace is the fourth most similar midfielder to the Englishman.

The best way to see where this comparison has come from is to look at the underlying metrics in which the pair rank closely, including, but not limited to, non-penalty expected and actual goals plus assists, passing accuracy, goal-creating actions, clearances, crosses into the penalty area and more, all per 90.

On top of their statistical similarities, both players also occupy a similar role on the pitch, playing as a central midfielder who not only helps out with attacks but also drops deep to help progress the ball out of defence.

Away from comparisons to one of the Premier League’s leading captains, you can also get an idea of why the Lilywhites might want to sign the “sublime” midfielder, as dubbed by Matthew Upson, by looking at his output from last season – he’s dealt with injuries this year.

For example, in 45 appearances for Les Dogues, which saw him play in attacking, central and defensive midfield, the 24-year-old dynamo racked up a haul of two goals and ten assists, which was a level of output that played a big part in getting his side into the Champions League this year.

Ultimately, Spurs need to add more quality to the team this summer if they are to progress next season, and Gomes could do exactly that without costing a penny in transfer fees.

Labuschagne fills his boots, Neser and Abbott make Ashes case, Green's brilliance extends his IPL stay

A recap of the form of the Australian players in county cricket and the IPL who now switch focus to India and England

Andrew McGlashan22-May-20231:29

Moody: Massive step for Green in his IPL career

Steven SmithIn the end, Smith only managed three innings for Sussex but looked in decent touch, although wore an increasingly miffed expression each time he was given lbw. It’s likely the DRS would have had a good workout had it been in place. Whether it is a genuine tactic for England during the Ashes to bowl straight remains to be seen; he is a prolific player through the leg side and they have fallen into that trap before. Marnus LabuschagneFace a lot of balls, score a lot of runs. It’s a regular pattern for Labuschagne who has tuned up for India and the Ashes with more than 500 runs. It was a quiet start with 17 and 5 in his opening match against Durham, but after that he strung together 64, 65, 170*, 42, 1 and 138. The pair of scores at Headingley could yet be significant. He made twin fifties there in the 2019 Ashes. While his newly-introduced offspin adds another string (and brought a career-best 4 for 89) it’s probably fair to say things won’t be going to plan if it’s seen too much over the six Tests.Related

Marcus HarrisAnother very solid county stint for Harris who, alongside Matt Renshaw, is one of the additional top-order options in Australia’s squad should a decision need to be made regarding Warner. Harris now averages 49.67 across his various county spells with Gloucestershire and Leicestershire, passing 10,000 first-class runs in the latest round of matches. Alongside an average of 46.81 for Victoria since the 2019 Ashes, Harris has certainly put the domestic runs on the board. After a home summer of being the spare batter, he may soon get the chance to show whether he can translate that consistently to Test cricket.Michael NeserHe’s looking a pretty handy official or unofficial reserve at the moment. It’s not quite as simple as just saying that Neser should play in the Ashes – there are some high-quality players to dislodge – but he can’t have done much more and if there was ever a horse for a course Neser would be it, particularly with the Ashes being played earlier than has become the norm. However, there is also the sneaking suspicion that Neser could be one of the very unlucky cricketers who does get what his numbers suggest he deserves.Michael Neser drives through the covers during his final-day century•Getty Images

Sean AbbottAbbott comes in the same bracket as Neser, although has yet to earn a Test debut. He, too, will be part of Australia’s preparation camp although not, as yet, part of the full squad. His returns with bat and ball for Surrey speak of a player who, more often than not, finds a way to contribute for whichever team he is part of. “His control of line and length, his pace, is just right for the amount of movement he can generate in the air,” Greg Shipperd, the incoming New South Wales coach, said earlier this month. “Through his T20 skill development he has learned to bowl a lot of cutters and is able to seam the ball in conditions. To right- or left-handers he presents a handful” Meanwhile, at the IPL…David WarnerIt should come as little surprise that Warner strung together a decent IPL although his strike-rate was a regular talking point. He signed off with 86 from 53 balls against CSK but in another match Capitals lost heavily. Clearly the scoring rate will be less of a factor come Test cricket, but whether the run-scoring form can be translated only time will tell. Mohammad Shami around the wicket with a new Dukes ball at The Oval will likely reveal more.Cameron GreenGreen’s scintillating maiden T20 hundred is the modern-day double-edged sword. Having come with the burden of a massive price tag he will leave with some notable successes, but helping Mumbai to the playoffs means he could be at the IPL right until the end, further cutting into his time to prepare for the WTC final. Last season he found the transition hard from T20 to Tests, but in a sign of his growth looked much more at home in India when he returned from an injury layoff.Cameron Green got to his century with the winning hit for Mumbai Indians•BCCI

Josh HazlewoodNine overs and an early return home. It’s precious little to make a judgement on how Test-ready Hazlewood may be as he looks to play more than one match in a series for the first time since early 2021. His IPL stint had been talked up as the ideal launching pad to build workload but he only managed playing three games and didn’t bowl four overs in any of them. Although CA has insisted he’s on track for the WTC final, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he was held back.Mitchell MarshA lean tournament with the bat for Marsh – and 63 of his runs came in one innings – after he’d come into it on the crest of a wave after his outstanding ODI performances. Missed Capitals’ last couple of matches with what is understood to be a minor adductor strain. Had earned what was effectively the final spot in the Ashes squad as direct cover for Green.

Topley on year-round franchise deals: 'Better off having a seat at the table than being left behind'

Injury-prone England quick is clear that “an almost endless supply of these leagues” is good for the game and good for the players’ future

Andrew Miller01-Aug-2023

Reece Topley, England’s left-arm seamer, believes that the inaugural season of Major League Cricket (MLC) has opened up “a career path that probably outlives your international career”, and says that the more such global leagues there are, the better it will be for the world game.Topley, who is on the comeback trail after a succession of freak injuries – including a twisted ankle that ended his participation in England’s triumphant T20 World Cup campaign in Australia last year – was speaking at the launch of KP Snacks’ community cricket pitches initiative, a partnership with the Hundred that will fund 100 new astroturf wickets over the next three years. However, the Hundred is feeling the squeeze after the successful first season of MLC in the USA, particularly in the wake of the news that Rashid Khan – arguably the most notable overseas star in this year’s event – has withdrawn on the eve of his stint with Trent Rockets, citing an unspecified injury only hours after returning 3 for 9 in MI New York’s victory in the MLC final in Dallas.Related

Although Rashid expressed his regret at the news, and said he hoped to return for the 2024 event, his decision reinforced the concerns about the Hundred’s ability to attract the world’s best cricketers. Rashid had been retained by Rockets on a top-bracket £125,000 contract, and was due to earn a pro-rata salary for three appearances prior to Afghanistan’s Asia Cup campaign in September. However, that sum paled in comparison to the MLC’s offer of US$ 175,000 for a minimum of five matches across two-and-a-half weeks. And for Topley, whose impressive displays in England’s white-ball team last year turned him into a similarly hot ticket on the franchise circuit, such opportunities are not to be sniffed at – particularly given his injury-prone nature, and the realisation that, at the age of 29, he has a limited shelf-life as an elite-level cricketer.Like his England team-mate Jason Roy, who negotiated an early end to his ECB incremental contract in order to play for LA Knight Riders in this year’s MLC, Topley had been considering taking part in the inaugural event, but that decision became moot when he suffered a dislocated shoulder while playing his first match for Royal Challengers Bangalore in this year’s IPL.However, he’s already weighing up his options for the 2024 event, and – amid reports that fellow England players such as Jofra Archer are being lined up for lucrative year-round contracts to represent their franchises across multiple T20 tournaments – he has decided for himself the sport’s current direction of travel.”If you don’t go to the MLC, it’s almost like you’re turning down another career path that probably outlives your international career,” he said. “I don’t mean that it’s more important than playing for England. But all-year contracts will come into the game. And I think that you’re almost better off having a seat at the table than being left behind, because it’s going to happen. And I think you need to almost embrace the change.”We’ve crossed that bridge now. The players’ feet will do the talking with what they prioritise themselves. I mean, the fees are no secret. I suppose you can find out how much someone’s willing to sell their soul for.”It looks a really good setup, to be honest,” he added, having watched the inaugural MLC from afar. “Obviously there’s been huge investment, which is nice to see. It’s come to fruition almost from being a seed in someone’s brain, and to judge by the people that have watched it, it looks a really good product. Personally, I think the more tournaments there are in countries, the better.”Reece Topley hasn’t played since dislocating his shoulder while playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore in this year’s IPL•BCCI

Topley’s comments will doubtless alarm the ECB, which is already facing a tricky month, given that the Hundred will be getting underway not only in the shadow of MLC, but also a thrilling Ashes campaign, which concluded at the Kia Oval only hours before the opening fixtures between Trent Rockets and Southern Brave in Nottingham. Despite reports that the tournament could be under review at the end of this season, it remains locked into the ECB’s current rights deal with Sky Sports, which does not expire until 2028.”Thankfully it’s not my job to have a rebuttal, that’s for the governing body – the ECB or Cricket Australia, or whoever,” Topley said. “They’ve got a job on their hands, because it’s almost like a matter of when [year-round contracts] come, not if.”I know [MLC] clashes with our schedule, but I think there’s enough [to go around]. There’s the CPL coming up too… there’s an almost endless supply of these leagues, and it’s going to be interesting to see how you keep the talent.”But I think the more leagues that pop up, the better, to be honest. Competition is only going to make people strive to improve their own competitions. When it was just the Big Bash, the Blast and the IPL, it was getting quite stagnant. These tournaments have almost introduced a fresh air and there’s an importance to keep reinventing and to strive as a business for the leagues themselves. So I think it’s healthy competition.”KP Snacks are funding 100 new community cricket pitches over the next three years. Crawley, Root and Bairstow blaze away to give England 377-run lead

England have scored at 4.86 in their second innings, ensuring they go into the final innings of the Test as standout favourites

Saturday at The Oval was never going to be quiet. After Australia had tried and failed to quieten the crowd here on day two of this fifth Ashes Test, England turned the volume back up to 11 on day three with a sensory overload of a second innings to assume control of this final round of a tumultuous series. But it is a day that will be remembered for what happened at its end. Speaking at stumps, after England had reached 389 for 9, leading Australia by 377, Stuart Broad announced this would be his 167th and final Test. Before attempting to ensure he goes out on a win, he will resume his innings with fellow veteran quick James Anderson. They were able to tough out the day to give them a shot at some bonus runs on Sunday before they strap their bowling boots back on in the pursuit of a 2-2 series scoreline.Unsurprisingly, a team driven by entertainment used their final Test innings of the summer to produce a “best of” performance. There were contributions throughout the line-up, with the biggest from the main headline-grabbers over the last six weeks. Such has been their speed of play in both innings, they have even stolen a march on the rains forecast for day five.Zak Crawley’s 73 took him to a final tally of 480 runs for the series, with the Kent batter the clubhouse leader on the run-scoring charts, 56 ahead of Usman Khawaja. Joe Root fell short of a second century of the series, for the second time in ten days, with an engaging 91. And Jonny Bairstow, who has had more words dedicated to his wicketkeeping – most of them unflattering – provided a reminder of his batting prowess with a punchy 75 that ensured one of these sides went into the final innings of a match as standout favourites for the first time this series.Such was the flow of play, and thanks to a hugely partisan south London crowd, Australia’s attack seemed secondary to proceedings. They bowled their overs – slowly, as per this series, managing just 80 in the day – but beyond that, runs came as and when England wanted, and wickets, too. Mitchell Starc’s 4 for 94 and Todd Murphy’s 3 for 110 spoke of their endeavour among the carnage. The pair combined for day three’s last five wickets, which fell for just 47 runs.Australia’s first-innings lead of 12 coming into the weekend was considered nominal in the grand scheme of things. The key question was whether England had learned from mistakes made at Edgbaston and Lord’s, where batting miscalculations bordering on over-indulgence spurned promising positions and, ultimately, led to two defeats that put the Ashes beyond their reach.Joe Root ramps a boundary over deep third•Getty Images

Within the first over, England were into the lead. Crawley did as he had done at the very beginning of this series, striking the first ball for four through the covers, as 13 were scored off the first six deliveries – almost as many as Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne managed in the first hour of play on day two. Both Crawley and Ben Duckett raced out of the blocks, bringing up their fifty stand in 8.4 overs before Duckett was adjudged caught behind on review, at the end of the 17th over. The 79 they managed took their opening partnership tally to 359 for the series, at a rate of 4.72 – just 0.01 shy of Matthew Hayden and Justin Langer’s scoring pace during the 2002-03 Ashes. With Moeen Ali unable to bat higher than five because of time spent off the field after picking up a groin strain while batting on day one, Ben Stokes strode out at No. 3 for the first time since November 2018. It has long been a position others have suggested for him, particularly given Root’s preference of No. 4. And he showed the necessary application in a stand of 61 with Crawley. The pair made it to lunch on 130 for 1 from 25 overs, and were keen to add plenty more. Those hopes died just nine deliveries into the afternoon session, when Crawley edged a smart delivery from Pat Cummins to Steven Smith at second slip.No bother. Out bounded Root to join Stokes, two best mates who are England’s best at gauging a situation, which, given the lead was only 128, was one of controlled hurry. First, however, a huge dose of luck. With just four to his name, Root was hit in front by Josh Hazlewood and adjudged not out, presumably because contact with bat and pad were close enough to suspect bat first. Cummins opted for a review, which confirmed pad as the first point of contact. Alas, the umpire’s call on line of impact meant Australia had to suck up a not-out call that got bitter as Root clicked through the gears.Mitchell Marsh was the unfortunate recipient of the reverse-ramp for six, over-correcting the next ball to see a full toss tickled down leg for four. At one point, Root had raced to 35 from 32, just two behind Stokes on 37 from 30 more deliveries. Then, with three successive fours off Starc – driven, fortuitously under-edged up and over Alex Carey, and guided more deliberately over the wicketkeeper’s head – took him ahead of Stokes. England’s lead, meanwhile, was up to 200.A single off the start of the very next over brought up Root’s second half-century of the series, from 42 deliveries. Stokes, however, would not join him, becoming the first of two wickets to fall in the space of nine deliveries. An attempt to channel Root’s aggression saw him cloth Murphy to Cummins at wide mid-on. Harry Brook walked in and closed out that Murphy over with the straightest of straight sixes, but he could not resist feathering a wide-ish Hazlewood delivery to have him heading back to the dressing room.Pat Cummins contemplates his options as England pile on the runs•Getty Images

The early work cushioned the mini-collapse (England were still 210 ahead) and Root’s presence at the crease meant there was always calm in the middle. Bairstow’s entrance has usually been cause for some kind of manic passage, but there was little of that here. The most productive partnership of the innings – 110 – was as normal as we have seen in the Bazball era. No undue risks, especially as Australia were the ones having to do the probing, meaning the Yorkshire duo just had to wait for the bad balls to come.Bairstow brought up a seven-boundary fifty from 60 deliveries, in keeping with a reserved domination by his standards that saw him contribute 70 of the century stand he and Root brought up from 142 deliveries. It was a stand that would only last an over more, as Murphy found some quality drift and bite off the surface to spin into Root’s stumps via an inside edge. The annoyance of falling nine short of a 31st Test century was eased somewhat by the lack of bounce from the delivery, which Root will look to exploit as the sole, functioning spinner. With the lead at 320, Bairstow and new batter Moeen were happy to go for broke.Bairstow could not get going, eventually falling to Starc attempting to find a second boundary after Root’s dismissal, but Moeen did find 29 more runs himself. Some were classy – a picture-perfect straight drive off Starc – while others were not, like when Hazlewood missed a catchable chance at fine leg, which ran away for four.A classy looking ramp off Starc allowed Hazlewood to make amends with a catch on the rope running to his right from fly slip, before England were whittled down to their final pair of Broad and Anderson, who managed to see things through to stumps. Though Anderson was struck on the arm, he toughed it out to take the innings into day four, even overturning an lbw decision off the penultimate ball of the day.The ovation when Anderson walked out at 379 for 9 was akin to a farewell, greeted to the field with a standing ovation and the singing of his name. None of those in the stands knew it was actually the man already out there who was about to finish up for good. No matter – they can make it up to Broad on day four.
