وكان لينكر يتولى تقديم برنامجه الشهير “مباراة اليوم” منذ عام 1999، ولكن تقرر رحيله نهاية الموسم المنصرم 2024/25.

وكان هناك خطة لتمديد تواجد لينكر عبر شبكة “بي بي سي” العالمية حتى بطولة كأس العالم 2026، ولكن تقرر إنهاء كل شيء.

وحسبما ذكرت صحيفة “ذا صن” الإنجليزية، فإن مسؤولي شبكة “بي بي سي” العالمية وجهوا صفعة أخيرة لـ لينكر، بعدما تقرر إلغاء آخر مقابلة كان مزمع إجرائها مع محمد صلاح.

وشددت على أن طبيعة العلاقة بين جاري لينكر وأليكس جيلسكي لم تكن ودية على الإطلاق.

وأشارت إلى أنه كانت هنك مخاوف من أن يتطرق لينكر، في حديثه مع محمد صلاح، إلى شيء يخص ما يحدث في قطاع غزة، الذي يعاني من اعتداءات من قِبل الكيان الصهيوني منذ 7 أكتوبر 2023.

وقال مصدر مطلع، حسب صحيفة “ذا صن” الإنجليزية: “كانت الخطة أن تبث المقابلة عبر بي بي سي في عطلة نهاية الأسبوع التي تسبق الحلقة الأخيرة من برنامج مباراة اليوم لـ لينكر”.

وأضاف: “وكان ذلك يشمل برنامج فوتبول فوكس في اليوم السابق، بالإضافة إلى بثها عبر الإنترنت وعلى وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي، ولكن تم إلغاء المقابلة”.

وأكدت الصحيفة أن البعض لم يرغبوا في أن يتحدث لينكر ومحمد صلاح عن غزة، خاصة أنهما سبق لهما الدفاع عن القضية خلال الأحداث الأخيرة.

وواصل المصدر: “يمكن أن يبدو الأمر وكأنه طُرح بشكل طبيعي خلال النقاش، ولكن الإدارة قررت التخلي عن الأمر كليًا تجنبًا للمخاطرة بمشاكل تحريرية محتملة”.

وأردف: “لقد تجاوزوا للتو عاصفة، لذا فإن مواجهة عاصفة أخرى ستكون بمثابة كابوس”.

وسبق أن تعرض لينكر لانتقادات عنيفة بعدما أصر على الدفاع عن القضية الفلسطينية، أكثر من مرة، في حين اتهمه البعض بمعاداة السامية.

Wednesday was a disappointing night for Celtic, but this remains a season of progress for Brendan Rodgers’ side.

The Hoops have reached the Champions League knockout phase for the first time since 2012/13, accumulating 12 points from eight league phase fixtures, most notably holding Atalanta to a goalless draw in Bergamo and beating RB Leipzig at home.

So, their reward was a clash with Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich, with the Rekordmeister visiting a typically rocking Parkhead on Wednesday, but this would prove to be a bridge too far for the Celts.

Bayern departed Glasgow 2-1 winners, Daizen Maeda’s second-half header sparking a late onslaught, but no equaliser was forthcoming, leaving the Bhoys with a mountain to climb in Bavaria on Tuesday.

Despite defeat, it was a performance all Celtic supporters can be proud of, with one defensive regular in particular standing out once again.

Celtic's previous right-back stars

For seven and a half seasons, Mikael Lustig was Celtic’s undisputed first-choice right-back.

The Swede arrived from Rosenborg on a free transfer in January 2012, making 276 appearances in hoops, winning eight consecutive Premiership titles, as well as four Scottish Cups and four League Cups.

By the time he departed for Gent in 2019, he did so as an unequivocal fans’ favourite, with Rodgers describing him as “very important”.

His successor at right-back would be Jeremie Frimpong who, at the age of 19, arrived from Man City with no first-team experience for a reported fee of £350,000.

Well, this would prove to be an excellent piece of business because, just 18 months and 51 appearances later, he was sold to Bayer Leverkusen for £11.5m.

The next right-back incumbent would be one of Ange Postecoglou’s many bargain signings.

Similar to Frimpong, Josip Juranović spent only 18 months at Celtic, also making just over 50 appearances, arriving from Legia Warszawa for £2.5m in June 2021, before joining Union Berlin for £7.5m, plus £2.5m in potential add-ons, shortly after the World Cup in Qatar.

To summarise, this trio all underline the fact that Celtic have always had a top-class right-sided full-back, and the current occupant of that position certainly belongs in the same class, possibly outperforming them all.

Celtic's unsung hero in defence

To preemptively replace the outgoing Juranović, the Hoops signed Alistair Johnston from MLS side Club de Foot Montréal for £3.5m in January 2023 and this has proved to be a great value deal, with the Canada international now worth around three times that amount, £7.5m to be precise according to Transfermarkt.

When Johnstone signed a new contract in November, Rodgers described this as “fantastic news”, adding the full-back had immediately “established himself as a fantastic player”.

Wednesday night against Bayern saw Johnston make his 97th appearance for the club, sitting out just 19 matches since his debut, which is pretty remarkable considering he required ankle surgery in the summer of 2023.

This season, the full-back has scored four goals and provided eight assists, meaning only 13 current Scottish Premiership players, across all competitions, have accumulated more goal involvements this season, which isn’t bad for a defender.

So, let’s see how Johnston compares to both Frimpong and Juranović.

As the table shows, Johnston is certainly comparable to his two predecessors, outperforming them both for defensive metrics, namely tackles, interceptions and ball recoveries, with the caveat that, should he complete 90 minutes against Dundee United on Saturday, he’ll have played more minutes for the club than Juranović and Frimpong combined.

Nevertheless, the Canadian has certainly proved to be a great value-for-money acquisition, and an excellent piece of scouting, discovering a player who was the 11th pick in the MLS SuperDraft just five years ago.

As noted by Tom Nightingale of Canada Soccer Daily, Johnston won ten duels against Bayern this week, more than any other player on the pitch, previously describing him as “outstanding”, emphasising that the full-back continues to impress.

It has been a really poor season for Manchester United, who are battling to get a top-half finish this season.

However, things were not made easier with the news a couple of weeks ago that Amad is out injured. The Ivorian attacker has been sensational under Ruben Amorim – contributing with nine goals and seven assists – but will miss the remainder of the season.

It’s safe to say that the 22-year-old has had a real impact on the Red Devils this season and will be a big miss.

With Kobbie Mainoo and Mason Mount also out with injury, it leaves Amorim thin on the ground in terms of options in that number 10 role.

Man United's current attacking midfield options

Amorim has four realistic options to play as a number 10. One of those is Bruno Fernandes. United’s captain has been playing deeper at times under Amorim, but his goal threat is obvious. He has ten goals and 12 assists this term.

The United boss has also tended to start Joshua Zirkzee behind the striker in recent weeks. His excellent ability to link play up and find runners beyond him, plus the physical presence he offers, means he could work well as an attacking midfielder in the dual 10 system Amorim employs. He has already shown great signs when playing there in recent weeks.

Alejandro Garnacho offers something unique at attacking midfield. He is unlike any other United player, someone who will relentlessly dribble at the opposition defence and try and take them on one-vs-one. The youngster has 14 goal involvements this season but has been in a drought.

Christian Eriksen is the fourth realistic option Amorim has to play in the role. Now into the final few months of his deal at United, the Denmark international has not featured much this season but possesses the timeless ability to unlock a defence with one pass.

However, amid this injury crisis, perhaps Amorim wishes United still had a former academy graduate on the books who has impressed after leaving the club.

Former Man United academy graduate would now be perfect

In the last few seasons, so many academy graduates have departed Old Trafford permanently. That includes established first-team players like Scott McTominay, who moved to Napoli, and less experienced yet high-potential players like Teden Mengi, who is now at Luton Town.

Another recent academy departure was attacking midfielder Andreas Pereira. The Brazilian, who went on several loan spells during his time at Old Trafford, made 75 appearances for the club, scoring and assisting nine times.

In 2022, he made the move to West Londoners Fulham for a fee in the region of £10m. Since joining the Cottagers, Pereira has thrived. In 108 games for the club, he has scored on ten occasions and grabbed 19 assists. His valuation of as much as £17.5m by Football Transfers shows just how much he has improved.

In his first two Premier League campaigns at the club, he managed to hit ten goal involvements. He also managed to get on the scoresheet in a 2-2 draw at Anfield against Liverpool this term, which surely brought a smile to the faces of United fans.

Pereira’s performances have been impressive over the past few seasons so much so that you can now draw a statistical comparison with Martin Odegaard and remarkably Phil Foden who are adjudged to be similar players via FBref.

The Arsenal captain, who is valued as highly as £90m by Transfermarkt, has three goals and six assists for the Gunners this season.

The statistical evidence suggests that both midfielders have been creatively excellent players over the season. On average, Pereira plays 2.67 key passes per game, compared to 2.33 for Odegaard. The Fulham star also averages 5.27 shot-creating actions per game, with the Arsenal skipper slightly less at 4.68 per game.

وجاء تفكير الزمالك في التعاقد مع المدرب المغربي بعدما نال إعجاب مسؤولي النادي بسيرته الذاتية، خاصة خبراته مع فرق الشباب بنادي بي إس في آيندهوفن الهولندي، إلى جانب قيادته للوداد الرياضي خلال فترة صعبة، نجح خلالها في الوصول لنهائي دوري أبطال إفريقيا أمام صن داونز، كما ترك الفريق وصيفًا في الدوري المحلي مع مباراتين مؤجلتين.

ويُعد عادل رمزي من أبرز الكفاءات التدريبية المغربية الصاعدة، ويحظى بتقدير واسع في الأوساط الكروية داخل بلاده وخارجها.

جدير بالذكر أن الزمالك يستعد لمواجهة مرتقبة غدًا الخميس أمام بيراميدز في نهائي كأس مصر، تحت قيادة المدرب المؤقت أيمن الرمادي.

Eighteen-year-old opening batter Shafali Verma will lead India at the inaugural Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa early next year. She will be one of two senior India players at the event apart from wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh.Shweta Sehrawat, who is currently leading the Under-19s in a five-match T20 series against a New Zealand Women’s development side in Mumbai, has been named Shafali’s deputy.In picking Shafali and Ghosh, India have diverged from the path taken by England’s selectors, who left senior players Alice Capsey and Freya Kemp out of their squad for the Under-19 tournament. The move, however, was aimed at managing their workloads keeping in mind England’s upcoming tour of the West Indies and the senior Women’s T20 World Cup in February next year. It could also mean that Shafali and Ghosh will not be part of the tri-series India’s senior side plays against South Africa and West Indies in the lead-up to the Women’s T20 World Cup 2023.Shafali has represented India in 46 T20Is, 21 ODIs and two Tests, while Ghosh has played 25 T20Is and 17 ODIs. Ghosh is 19, but she is eligible to take part in the tournament since she was born after the cut-off date of birth of August 31, 2003.Apart from Shafali and Ghosh, India’s batting will be led by Sehrawat, Gongadi Trisha, Soumya Tiwari and Soniya Mendhiya. Trisha and Tiwari are leading the run-charts in the ongoing series against the New Zealand Women’s development team with 115 and 106 respectively. In the Women’s Under-19 T20 Challenger Trophy, Trisha scored 117 runs – the second-most behind Sehrawat’s 163. Sehrawat also topped the charts in the Quadrangular Women’s Under-19 T20 series, which also featured Sri Lanka and West Indies.Mendhiya, like captain Shafali, plays for Haryana in the Women’s Under-19 circuit and bats in the middle order apart from bowling offspin. She scored 187 runs in six innings of the Women’s Under-19 T20 Trophy at a strike rate of 105.05. Fast bowlers Titas Sadhu and Hurley Gala will lead the pace attack with Falak Naz and Shabnam MD also in the mix. Sadhu picked up five wickets in the T20 Challenger Trophy and also picked up two wickets in the four matches she played for Bengal in the Senior Women’s T20 Trophy earlier this season. Gala also offers a power-hitting option to go with her fast bowling.Punjab’s Mannat Kashyap, who picked up a five-wicket haul in the fourth T20 against the New Zealand Women’s development side, will have fellow left-arm spinner Sonam Yadav, offspinner Archana Devi and legspinner Parshavi Chopra for company.Hrishita Basu could be used as the backup wicketkeeper to Ghosh. Interestingly, neither Shafali nor Ghosh were part of the various Under-19 competitions held in the lead-up to the World Cup.Uttar Pradesh allrounder Shikha Shalot, Kerala bowler Najla CMC and Hyderabad seamer Yashashri have been named in the reserves.India’s Under-19s will play five T20s against the South Africa Under-19s from December 27 to January 4 in Pretoria. They meet South Africa in their opening match of the World Cup too, on January 14 in Benoni.India are in Group D of the Under-19 World Cup along with South Africa, UAE and Scotland in a tournament of 16 teams. The top three teams from each of the four groups will progress to the Super Six round, where teams will be pooled into two groups of six each.
