Dane Paterson, James Pattinson make short work of Sussex to fire Notts towards title

Cheteshwar Pujara resists with 49* but youthful team are picked apart by Division leaders

Nottinghamshire 240 and 301 (Hameed 94, James 56, Robinson 5-60) beat Sussex 143 (Paterson 5-43, Pattinson 5-56) and 142 (Pujara 49*, Paterson 3-14, Pattinson 3-47) by 256 runsNottinghamshire wrapped up a 256-run over Sussex with almost a day and a half to spare to consolidate their place at the top of Division Two in the LV=Insurance County Championship ahead of the September run-in.Bowled out for 301 in their second innings soon after the start of the third day, giving Sussex a target of 399 to pull off the least likely outcome, Nottinghamshire shot out their youthful opponents for 142 in 47.3 overs.Overseas fast bowlers Dane Paterson (three for 14) and James Pattinson (three for 47) each raised their individual hauls to eight wickets in the match.Without a number of players through injury and illness, Sussex realistically needed Indian Test star Cheteshwar Pujara to post a substantial score to give them any chance of taking the match into a fourth day. He finished unbeaten on 49 but no one could stay with him to build a partnership. To compound their woes, Sussex left Trent Bridge with no points, their three bowling bonus points from the first innings cancelled out by a three-point deduction for a slow over-rate. Nine wickets in the match for England’s Ollie Robinson on his return from a back injury and other issues therefore counted for nothing. With two of their remaining matches at home – against Leicestershire and Durham – and a visit to struggling Worcestershire in their other fixture, Nottinghamshire now look odds-on to seal promotion.Bowling with a new ball after Wednesday’s play ended with the first one exactly 80 overs old, Sussex at least needed only 25 deliveries with it to see off the Nottinghamshire tail.Brad Currie bowled Liam Patterson-White with one that kept a touch low before Robinson had a tentative Luke Fletcher leg before and dismissed Pattinson via a miscue to cover.Robinson finished with five for 60, enough to move him ahead of Henry Crocombe as Sussex’s leading wicket-taker on 17 at 15.64, despite this being only his third match of the Division Two campaign. It left Sussex with a mighty task by anyone’s standards, let alone a team with six players aged 21 or under.Tom Clark, almost run out without scoring, edged behind in Fletcher’s third over, but Ali Orr, who came into this match with almost 650 first-class runs for the season, made another good impression. For a while it looked as though he might be the one to help Pujara make Nottinghamshire work for their win until he ran into a snorter from Pattinson that he could only fend away from his head, the ball looping off his glove for short-leg Ben Slater to claim the catch.Fynn Hudson-Prentice – at 26 one of the senior Sussex batters – was at least with Pujara at lunch, but he departed a couple of overs later, nicking to the keeper as Paterson found some movement on a pitch still giving the bowlers something to work with.Oli Carter perished to a poor shot, caught behind down the leg side off Fletcher, before Pattinson saw off the two 18-year-olds in consecutive overs as James Coles reprised Carter’s mode of dismissal and Archie Lenham, who had stuck around stubbornly for a brave 31 in the first innings, perished to his third ball as the Australian quick zipped one through to send stumps flying in all directions.Robinson fell to a leading edge off the medium pace of Steven Mullaney, caught at mid-off, where the ever-popular Fletcher delighted both his team-mates and his fan club in the Radcliffe Road stand by throwing his not-inconsiderable frame to his right to take a diving catch.Sussex’s abject afternoon continued when Pujara changed his mind about scrambling a single to midwicket off the final ball of a Patterson-White over, leaving Ari Kavelas stranded as Lyndon James made a direct hit with his throw in, before Paterson wrapped up the win at 3.25pm as Currie followed Sean Hunt back to the pavilion as a second lbw in consecutive overs.

Du Plessis has become one of the most consistent T20 performers in the world, with the conversation often turning back to whether there should still be a spot for him in the South Africa side.

Man Utd now accelerating operation to sign "strong" £21m Tel alternative

Still desperately searching for reinforcements, Manchester United are now reportedly set to accelerate a move to sign a young forward in an alternative to Mathys Tel ahead of Monday’s deadline.

Man Utd transfer news

After a month full of frustration on the transfer front, the Red Devils are at least set to get their business underway and welcome Patrick Dorgu from Lecce. The left wing-back will finally provide Ruben Amorim with a natural option for his 3-4-2-1 system and solve a Luke Shaw problem that has persisted under a number of different managers over the years.

However, those at Old Trafford may not be done there. Bayern Munich’s Tel still has quite the decision to make after seemingly rejecting Tottenham Hotspur and becoming the subject of Manchester United’s interest, making him one to watch.

He’s not the only young forward on their radar, though, and the Premier League giants could yet turn towards an alternative if they suffer the same fate as Tottenham in the coming days.

Man Utd struck gold on "generational" star worth way more than Tel & Quenda

One young talent is worth his weight in gold to Man United

According to FootMercato, Manchester United are now accelerating their operation to sign El Bilal Toure before Monday’s deadline. However, to say that any deal would be a complicated one would be an understatement.

First and foremost, Stuttgart are reportedly looking to make Toure’s loan move from Atalanta permanent by triggering their €18m (£15m) option.

The German club will then reportedly aim to sell the 23-year-old to Manchester United for €25m (£21m) plus bonuses before loaning him back from Old Trafford for the rest of the season.

El Bilal Toure for Stuttgart.

It’s worth noting that to complete all of those stages, Manchester United, Atalanta and Stuttgart have just two days until the window slams shut.

"Strong" Toure could be Hojlund repeat

23 years old and a player who’s yet to truly set the world alight on the goalscoring front, Toure is showing far too many similarities to Rasmus Hojlund, who has struggled in a Manchester United shirt. And the last thing that the Red Devils need is another struggling striker having already welcomed Joshua Zirkzee last summer.

Struggling for minutes on loan at Stuttgart, Toure is unlikely to find the game time he needs at Manchester United, even as Hojlund and Zirkzee continue to struggle under Amorim.

That has not stopped the praise from coming his way since arriving in Germany, with Stuttgart board member Fabian Wohlgemuth saying via the Bundesliga’s official website: “El Bilal Touré is another strong addition to our attack.

“He has demonstrated his qualities in France, Spain and most recently in Italy with Atalanta. He’s the type of player we haven’t had before, and his exceptional speed will add another important facet to our attack.”

Mark Wood focused on World Cup readiness despite stellar display on England return

Fast bowler provides cutting edge on first appearance in seven months

Andrew Miller23-Sep-2022

After nearly seven months on the sidelines, Mark Wood marked his return to international cricket with a searing display of matchwinning fast bowling in the third T20I at Karachi, but said that workload management remains his priority as England build towards the winter’s main event, next month’s T20 World Cup in Australia.England’s need for raw speed had been shown up in their chastening loss in the second T20I on Thursday night, in which Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan posted a world-record opening stand of 203 to seal the match for Pakistan by ten wickets. But even so, Wood was a surprise inclusion in England’s XI for the rematch 24 hours later, given that he underwent two bouts of elbow surgery this year, and had played a solitary club match for Ashington since withdrawing from England’s Test tour of the Caribbean in March. It was, however, a decisive selection, as Wood touched speeds close to 97mph/156kph in a display that impressed Pakistan’s own pace-bowling royalty, Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis, in the commentary box. His figures of 3 for 24 included the crucial early scalp of Babar, Thursday’s centurion, who was hurried by a savage bouncer in Wood’s first over before fencing his fourth ball to Reece Topley at deep third for 8.”You tend to be a bit fresh after seven months out,” Wood told Sky Sports afterwards. “It’s been a long time, and I felt very tired at the end. I know it’s only a T20, but it’s all the intensity of international cricket. But I’ll rest up and be good again, hopefully in the future. The challenge now is obviously to back it up. Can I keep those speeds going?”The revved-up atmosphere within the National Stadium was, Wood acknowledged, a big factor in his performance, as he charged to the crease with a real sense of occasion spurring him on. Haider Ali was blasted out by the first ball of his second over to leave Pakistan in disarray at 21 for 3, and when Haris Rauf flapped another short ball to cover at the death, he had proven the local adage “pace is pace yaar” remains a timeless one.”It was loud,” he said. “They are knowledgeable about their cricket here and very supportive. I don’t know if the cheers were for me or Babar or Rizwan, but they played really well the last game, so it was a big wicket to try and get them early doors. Toppers [Topley] bowled a fantastic over before I came on, and that allowed me to try and be a bit more attacking with my bowling.”I’ve got plenty to work on,” he added. “Today was a good day, but you know what it’s like when you haven’t played for a while, the adrenaline’s flying, it’s like you’re making your debut all over again. The crowd was flying. So the challenge for me is the next one, can I can I repeat that?”Babar Azam was given the hurry-up by Mark Wood•Getty Images

As to when Wood will repeat it, that remains to be seen. With England’s next match fast approaching on Sunday, it seems likely that he will sit that one out and continue his comeback in Lahore next week, given that the key date in his diary remains October 22, the start of England’s World Cup campaign, against Afghanistan in Perth, where his raw pace is sure to be a key asset in the attack.”My body feels okay,” he said. “I’ll probably live on an ice machine now. We’ll have a down day tomorrow, with not much on, and then get ready for the next game. I don’t know what the selection is going to be for the next game, or after that. What’s important for me is that I don’t want to go too hard now and then I’m not ready for Australia. I’ve got to peak at the right time, and then when it comes to that World Cup, I’m fit and firing.”I’m just a little bit tired,” Wood added. “It’s my first game in a while but actually I felt pretty good leading into it. I’ve done loads of time in the gym, lots of running, but nothing is the same as playing a game. So it was just a different intensity. But I’m absolutely fine.”Related

Brook and Duckett sparkle before Wood fires England to big win

More where that came from after Harry Brook makes his mark with maiden international fifty

It’s a much-changed team that Wood has walked back into, with Eoin Morgan retired, and a host of familiar team-mates missing for a variety of reasons, not least his fellow World Cup winners, Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow. But, as Moeen Ali, England’s stand-in captain, said during the presentations, Wood remains a hugely valued member of the squad, both for his on-field impact and his presence in the dressing-room.And, given the stellar displays from Harry Brook and Ben Duckett on Friday, Wood was able to give the vibe within that dressing-room a vote of confidence, especially in the wake of such a crushing loss on Thursday.”I think it’s fantastic,” he said. “To be able to walk into a dressing-room, feel that freedom, speak your mind, it says a lot about the group, and culture of the group.”The other night, rather than being critical, we looked at what we thought we could do better. We just said ‘well played’ to those two guys, but I think we realised that maybe we could have bowled a few more short balls, or gone round the wicket with the left-armers. Just little things could we have done differently. It’s easy in hindsight, but that was the chat.”

Man City academy star who was sold for £1m is now worth more than Marmoush

Manchester City were busy in the transfer window. They spent a combined £180m on new signings, to help improve their really poor season so far. Pep Guardiola’s side face a Champions League knockout clash with Real Madrid and an uphill battle to finish in the top four of the Premier League.

Two of the winter recruits for the Citizens came at centre-back. One of them was Vitor Reis, who made the move to East Manchester from Brazilian side Palmeiras for £29.6m. They also signed Uzbekistan defender Abdukodir Khusanov from French outfit Lens for £33.6m plus add-ons.

The reigning Premier League champions also added depth in midfield and attack before the window slammed shut, signing Nico Gonzalez and Omar Marmoush.

Why Man City signed Gonzalez and Marmoush

Guardiola’s side left things late on deadline day, signing Gonzlaez at the 11th hour. However, they brought him in from FC Porto for £50m, an important addition to the squad given their lack of midfielders.

Since Rodri’s injury, the Citizens have been struggling for depth in the centre of the park. Although the Spaniard is not a like-for-like replacement for the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner, he will still add numbers in midfield. This season, Gonzalez has seven goals and six assists for the Portuguese side.

It has been an exceptional season for Marmoush, who made the move to the Etihad Stadium from Eintracht Frankfurt for a fee in the region of £59m. He adds quality depth up front and the ability to play in lots of positions.

The Egyptian attacker has been on fire this season. Including his two games for City so far, the 25-year-old has made 28 appearances in all competitions, scoring 20 times and grabbing 14 assists in that time.

Guardiola and Co have spent the money they needed over the winter, to help reinvest in their squad and give themselves the best chance of ending the season strongly.

One of their former academy stars is also thriving this season and incredibly is actually valued higher than what City spent on their new midfielder and attacker.

The Man City academy star worth more than Gonzalez and Marmoush

The player in question here is Morgan Rogers. It has been a scintillating season for the Aston Villa attacker, who has flourished at first-team level since moving from City to Championship side Middlesbrough in July 2023. Transfermarkt reported the move cost Boro £1m.

Towards the start of the Premier League season, Liverpool legend turned pundit Jamie Carragher was full of praise for Rogers. He described him as a “machine”, before saying he “looks unstoppable”.

Indeed, the former Man City academy graduate has certainly proved that in the 2024/25 campaign so far. He has played 32 games across all competitions, scoring ten goals and grabbing five assists.

Perhaps the best game of the season from the England international came in Villa’s most recent Champions League outing, a 4-2 win over Celtic at Villa Park.

After two minutes, the attacker had two goals and completed his hat-trick in the second half. It was a completely devastating performance.

In the Premier League, Rogers put in a huge performance to sink Guardiola’s side and help Villa to a 2-1 win earlier in the season. He scored and assisted that day, as well as completing five dribbles and winning eight duels, as per Sofascore.

Stats from Sofascore

The Villa number 27 has seen his transfer value shoot up. According to CIES Football Observatory, he is worth as much as £74m. That is far more than what the East Mancunian outfit paid for both Marmoush and Gonzalez.

Looking back on it, City may well regret moving the England international on for when they did. Not only is he now worth £73m more than what they sold him for, but the 22-year-old might have saved them a fortune on their January signings, especially Marmoush.

Morgan Rogers

Nevertheless, Cty’s loss is Villa’s gain, and Rogers is loving life in Claret and Blue, where his value will surely only increase if his performances continue.
