Warwickshire have signed Nathan McAndrew, South Australia’s seam-bowling allrounder, as an overseas player to fill the void left in their side by Tim Bresnan’s retirement.McAndrew, 28, joined South Australia ahead of this season’s Sheffield Shield after losing his New South Wales contract and was the competition’s second-highest wicket-taker ahead of this week’s final. He is due to be available for up to 10 County Championship fixtures, starting from Warwickshire’s fixture against Essex on April 21, and will also be registered for the T20 Blast as injury cover for Paul Stirling and Carlos Brathwaite.”We’ve looked closely at Nathan over the Australian summer and believe that he could thrive in English conditions,” Paul Farbrace, Warwickshire’s director of cricket, said. “He’s had a good first season with South Australia and he recognises that platform that playing county cricket can give him in getting recognised by the Australian selectors.”With the retirement of Tim Bresnan earlier this year, securing a strong bowling allrounder in Nathan is exactly what we need to help balance our attack and we’re looking forward to welcoming him into the dressing room at Edgbaston next month.”Related

McAndrew is among a number of players who have benefitted from the ECB’s decision to loosen its criteria for a ‘governing body visa endorsement’ ahead of the 2020 season, in order to ensure leading overseas players were available for the Hundred.Previously, players were required to have appeared in one Test or fifteen limited-overs internationals in the 24 months before their visa application but the ECB added the option of having played at least 20 T20 games in a full-member nation in late 2019, which has opened up a route into county cricket for Big Bash regulars like McAndrew.”Coming over to England to play Championship cricket is something that many cricketers around the world aspire to,” McAndrew said. “To get the chance to represent the County Champions is an unbelievable opportunity.”I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my move to South Australia, but I want to build on the last few months by taking more wickets for Warwickshire. I’ve been playing the best cricket of my career, so I can’t wait to get to Edgbaston and get started with the Bears.”

INÍCIO DE JOGO MOVIMENTADO

Fazendo valer o fator casa, a equipe do Botafogo partiu pra cima do Náutico logo no começo.

LSG and Royals seek win to avoid mid-table logjam

While Royals search for solutions to make up for Hetmyer’s absence, LSG might ponder giving Evin Lewis a game

Hemant Brar14-May-20223:06

Do the Royals batters lack clarity about their roles?

Big pictureIPL 2022 has entered that phase where every result can boost or damage a team’s playoff chances severely.Lucknow Super Giants are second on the points table with 16 points from 12 games and a win against Rajasthan Royals on Sunday will see them through to the playoffs. Just below them are Royals, with 14 points from 12 games. Currently, they control their own destiny but can ill-afford a defeat, because then they may have to rely on other results going their way.Watch live in the USA

You can watch the match on ESPN+ in English and in Hindi.

One reason behind Super Giants’ and Royals’ success is having largely settled playing XIs. However, both teams do have an Achilles’ heel. For Super Giants, it’s that one middle-order slot. They started with Manish Pandey but he didn’t have much success. In their previous match, they even handed an IPL debut to Karan Sharma. So far, the presence of quality allrounders has made up for that weakness. But does that mean they keep continuing in the same manner? For Royals, Jos Buttler and Shimron Hetmyer did the bulk of the scoring in the first half of the season. Hetmyer is now unavailable, and despite Yashasvi Jaiswal and Devdutt Padikkal showing some form, their batting depth remains suspect. At times they have promoted R Ashwin up the order with decent returns. Do they stick with the same combination, or bring in James Neesham for Kuldeep Sen? While Sen offers extra pace, his economy rate (9.41) has been on the higher side.In the newsRoyals have signed uncapped South African allrounder Corbin Bosch as a replacement for Nathan Coulter-Nile. Bosch, 27, is a seam-bowling allrounder and bats in the lower middle order.Likely XIsLucknow Super Giants: 1 Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 KL Rahul (capt), 3 Deepak Hooda, 4 Karan Sharma/Evin Lewis, 5 Krunal Pandya, 6 Marcus Stoinis, 7 Ayush Badoni, 8 K Gowtham/Jason Holder, 9 Mohsin Khan, 10 Dushmantha Chameera, 11 Avesh KhanRajasthan Royals: 1 Yashasvi Jaiswal, 2 Jos Buttler, 3 Devdutt Padikkal, 4 Sanju Samson (capt & wk), 5 Rassie van der Dussen, 6 Riyan Parag, 7 R Ashwin, 8 Trent Boult, 9 Prasidh Krishna, 10 Yuzvendra Chahal, 11 Kuldeep SenShould LSG consider bringing in Evin Lewis to shore up their upper middle order?•BCCI

Strategy punts The conventional wisdom in T20s is that batters find it easier to attack if the ball is spinning into them. But here is an exception: Yuzvendra Chahal, a legspinner, has dismissed Quinton de Kock, a left-hand batter, six times in 39 balls while conceding just 44 runs. On the other hand, KL Rahul, a right-hand batter, has smashed Chahal for 106 runs off 67 balls in T20 cricket while getting out only once. So Royals should use Chahal accordingly, perhaps bringing him on earlier if Rahul is the first batter dismissed. To counter Super Giants’ opening pair, Royals could also give the new ball to Ashwin. He has dismissed de Kock four times for 84 runs in 75 balls. While Ashwin is yet to dismiss Rahul, he has given away only 16 runs off 20 balls against him. If Super Giants want to continue using Marcus Stoinis as a finisher, Evin Lewis could come into the side to fill that hole in the upper middle order. For that, they will have to leave out Jason Holder, which shouldn’t impact their bowling much given how Mohsin Khan has stepped up. In place of Holder, they could bring in K Gowtham. With two left-handers in Royals’ top four, playing an offspinner in the XI will not be a bad idea.Stats that matter With 459 runs in 12 innings, Rahul is currently the second-highest run-scorer this season behind Buttler (625). But he has also been dismissed five times in single digits, including three times on zero. Trent Boult has dismissed Rahul twice, including a first-ball duck earlier this season, but Rahul has taken 110 runs off 63 balls against him. Avesh Khan is the only bowler in IPL 2022 with five or more wickets in each phase (powerplay, middle overs, death). Among those who have bowled at least ten overs in IPL 2022, Mohsin has the best economy rate (5.19). Boult has an economy rate of 14.28 at the death, the third-worst in the tournament.

Not just Jesus: Arsenal star won 100% duels totally "changed the game"

It might not have been the perfect performance, but last night’s League Cup win over Crystal Palace was just what Arsenal needed.

Mikel Arteta’s side have been receiving plenty of flak – justifiably – following their dismal 0-0 draw with Everton on the weekend, but last night’s win showed they can still be devastating in open play.

That said, the first half was concerning, as the Gunners went into the break trailing 1-0 and looking blunt in attack.

Fortunately, things looked very different after halftime, and while there were a few brilliant performances in that second half, two players changed the game, including Gabriel Jesus.

Gabriel Jesus' game vs Crystal Palace

So, the first thing to say is that, like the rest of his teammates, Jesus was incredibly underwhelming in the first half last night.

However, once he came out for the second 45, he looked like a different animal and took the game by the scruff of its neck.

The former Manchester City star had the Eagles backline absolutely terrified, and justifiably so, as after making run after run in behind, he had bagged himself a brilliant hat trick within just 36 minutes of the restart.

Unsurprisingly, the Brazilian phenom left the watching press flabbergasted, with the Standard’s Simon Collings writing that it was a ‘dream night’ for the ‘majestic’ forward and awarding him a 9/10 match rating.

In all, it was an almost perfect display from Jesus, and while he’s been a clear second choice to Kai Havertz since the turn of the year, he simply must start against Palace in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

That said, there was another Arsenal star who was just as influential in the result last night, a star who didn’t even start the game: Martin Odegaard.

Martin Odegaard's game vs Crystal Palace

Now, while it was likely down to resting him, Arteta’s decision to bench Odegaard last night could also have been down to his really poor display against Everton on Saturday afternoon.

Regardless, whatever the reason was for him not starting against Palace, the manager had to bring his captain on for the second half to try and change the game, which is just what he did.

The midfield “wizard,” as dubbed by former footballer Babayele Sodade, was simply sublime against the South Londoners, appearing here, there and everywhere, helping out in defence and picking up two assists, which, as journalist Charles Watts said, completely “changed the game” for his team.

The former Real Madrid wonderkid impressed the Standard’s Collings as well, who gave him an 8/10 match rating on the night, writing that it was a true ‘captain’s performance.’

Unsurprisingly, his statistics from the game more than back up such appraisals, as in 50 minutes of action, he completed 30 of 33 passes, played three key passes, completed 100% of his long balls and dribbles, created two big chances, and ultimately provided two assists.

Ultimately, while the team as a whole certainly upped their game in the second half last night, both Odegaard and Jesus stood out as Arsenal’s best players, and were it not for them, there is every chance Arteta would have to be explaining why his side had just been dumped out of the League Cup yet again.

Leigh Kasperek, Katie Levick lead depleted Diamonds to derby win

Spin dominates at Headingley as Thunder slide to 99 all out chasing 125

Northern Diamonds overcame significant injury and unavailability issues to beat cross-Pennine rivals Thunder by 25 runs at Headingley and keep their Charlotte Edwards Cup Finals Day hopes alive. The Diamonds only had 12 fit senior players to chose from and were missing England trio Lauren Winfield-Hill (quad) and Katherine Brunt and Nat Sciver, who got married yesterday.A spin-dominated game saw the Diamonds bowled out for 124, including 3 for 23 from Hannah Jones and an innings-high 28 from opener Sterre Kalis. But the hosts then stifled a Thunder batting line-up who lost in-form openers Emma Lamb and Georgie Boyce early, bowling them out for 99 inside 19 overs. The competition’s leading wicket-taker, legspinner Katie Levick, took her tally to 12 with 3 for 25.Related

Levick's five-for not enough as Vipers squeeze past Diamonds

The Diamonds moved into second place in Group B with a second win in four games, this including a bonus point. They are behind leaders Southern Vipers with two still to play. The top teams in each of the two groups qualify plus the best second-placed finisher. Thunder have now lost three from four, only beating the Diamonds at Sale. They are not mathematically out of the equation but could be by tonight.Thunder, also missing England’s Kate Cross and Sophie Ecclestone due to their involvement in the Women’s T20 Challenge in India, looked to have this game under control as left-arm spinner Jones and fellow spinners Alex Hartley and Lamb – who claimed two wickets each – shared seven for 58 from 12 overs combined. The Diamonds, having won the toss, made a steady start on a true pitch. Kalis led the way, but she hoisted Hartley to long-on, leaving the score at 61 for 2 in the 11th. Lamb had earlier got Bess Heath caught at backward point, and when she struck again in the 12th over to bowl a sweeping home captain Hollie Armitage for 17, the Diamonds were under pressure at 63 for 3.Seamer Sophia Turner then struck with each of her first two balls, at the start of the 15th over, to turn the screw at 78 for 5. Hartley took a superb diving catch at midwicket to help dispose of Leah Dobson before Leigh Kasperek was caught behind by captain Ellie Threlkeld, stood up to the stumps. And Hartley also had a hand in the run out of Abi Glen with an accurate throw from long-off in the next over, capping a loss of three wickets for nine runs in 10 balls.Linsey Smith gave the hosts some respite with three boundaries in as many balls off Turner at the start of the 17th over to take the score to 104 for six. But it was only brief as she was bowled by Hartley for 25 shortly afterwards. Jones then bowled Phoebe Turner, Emma Marlow and Levick in the 20th over. However, the pendulum was about to swing. Thunder openers Boyce and Lamb had both scored fifties in each of the last two games, including in a home win over Diamonds. So, when they fell for 16 and 15, leaving the score at 41 for 2 in the seventh over, it was understandable that the hosts felt they were back in business. Boyce was caught at cover off Smith’s left-arm spin and Lamb run out coming back for a second into midwicket. And Thunder subsided quickly. The openers were the first two of five wickets to fall for 17 as the score slipped to 48 for 5 in the 10th over.Levick bowled Ellie Threlkeld and trapped Shachi Pai lbw in the space of three balls in the ninth before accurate New Zealand offie Kasperek bowled Laura Jackson. From there, it felt like job done for the hosts, and so it proved as two more run-outs contributed to their downfall plus further wickets for Kasperek and Levick.”We got told that the pitch would be a bit of a road, so we were thinking anything around 170 would be a good total,” Kasperek said. “We have such a good spin attack, with Katie Levick leading the way. Linsey Smith bowled out of her skin and young Emma Marlow as well.”

"Selfless" £45k-p/w Wolves star could also leave alongside Matheus Cunha

With the full effect of the new manager bounce well underway at Wolverhampton Wanderers, the January transfer window could quickly stop Vitor Pereira in his tracks as Matheus Cunha and one other star man reportedly threaten to steal the spotlight.

Wolves transfer news

All Pereira needs to do is ask the man he succeeded about just how difficult it is to keep hold of star players in the Premier League. Gary O’Neil’s side were flying last season, but in came the vultures disguised as West Ham United and Chelsea to swoop in and take Max Kilman and then Pedro Neto. Suffering as a result, O’Neil quickly found himself out of a job and Wolves found themselves in a relegation scrap.

Since then, of course, Pereira has arrived to instantly benefit from a classic new manager bounce that he’ll be desperate to turn permanent following victories over Leicester City and Manchester United as well as a late draw against Tottenham Hotspur.

That turn of form may yet prove to be somewhat costly, however, with the likes of Manchester United now reportedly circling around Cunha. The in-form Brazilian has been Wolves’ brightest sparks and a Player of the Season candidate so far – making it more important than ever that the Midlands club keep hold of him. But he’s not the only one attracting attention on that front.

Wolves open talks to make "leader by nature" Pereira's first signing

Pereira is looking to strengthen his squad in the January transfer window.

ByDominic Lund Dec 31, 2024

According to journalist Ahmed Aljadi, as relayed by Molineux News, Saudi Arabian club and Pereira’s former side Al Shabab are in negotiations to sign Mario Lemina, whose contract is set to expire at the end of the season.

The £45,000-a-week midfielder was, of course, stripped of the captaincy after he found himself at the centre of some unsavoury scenes in the aftermath of defeat against West Ham and is yet to feature under Pereira as a result of injury. Like many have done so far, he will be hoping to wipe the slate clean under a new manager when he returns to full fitness.

"Selfless" Lemina offers crucial experience

After losing both Neto and Kilman last summer, Wolves can ill-afford to lose Lemina – particularly if it is to be as a free agent and a deal that they will not profit from during the summer. Even if the former Fulham man does not find a way to break up the early Pereira midfield partnership between Andre and Joao Gomes, Wolves could certainly do with the depth and experience that he provides.

O’Neil, despite how things ended, was full of praise for Lemina not so long ago. The former Wolves manager told reporters as relayed by The Express and Star last March: “I’ve spoken to Mario quite a bit about it. I know he can do both and I know maybe he’d prefer to do more of one than the other, but he understands at times the team will need him to do the other things.

“He’s an incredibly selfless guy who will sacrifice himself. If I told him he’s going to play somewhere where he might only get a 4/10 in the paper tomorrow, but we’re going to win the game, he would definitely do that for us.”
