The new Origi: Liverpool struck gold on star who’s now worth 116567% more

We love Mohamed Salah, and we love Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk too. These are the staples of Liverpool’s rip-roaring successes over the past nine years or so.

Andrew Robertson? Integral at left-back across the duration of Jurgen Klopp’s reign. Alisson Becker is one of the finest goalkeepers of his generation and Sadio Mane and Bobby Firmino joined Salah for many remarkable years, tying together in an attacking triptych for the ages, wreaking havoc and lifting trophies.

But what about those of a more clutch nature? Liverpool have fashioned some real superstars across the past decade, but those of less sweeping legacies still triumphed in playing a fundamental role too.

Liverpool's most clutch players

Last season, while he certainly had his negatives, Darwin Nunez proved to be Liverpool’s go-to man for coming up trumps, notching five match-winning strikes in the Premier League.

Darwin Nunez for Liverpool

Nunez needs to find and sustain his clinical edge but no one can deny that the man’s a maverick, a born entertainer. Special shoutout to Wataru Endo too, for the Japan midfielder brought his tough-tackling style to English football and often helped Liverpool over the line in the later stages – notably against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final.

There have been many further cult heroes to grace the Anfield walls across this illustrious epoch in Liverpool’s history; Xherdan Shaqiri is another.

None, however, carry the aura nor the impact of Divock Origi, who is regarded as one of Klopp’s most memorable members.

The Belgian’s arrival predated Klopp’s. He completed a £10m transfer from LOSC Lille in July 2014 before returning to the French club on loan for the 2014/15 season, scoring nine goals in all competitions.

He left a hero. A deep-diving breakdown into Origi’s Anfield career would yield middling findings. He scored 41 goals across 175 matches in total, with just 22 Premier League goals struck across seven seasons. Hardly the stuff of legends.

But a legend he is. Klopp said so. Origi’s unmatched quality in popping up on the biggest moment to score an all-important goal for Liverpool is something that cannot be taught. He simply has it.

His two-goal haul in the Reds’ historic turnaround victory over Barcelona is enough to erect a statue, but then the 29-year-old went on to seal the deal against Tottenham Hotspur in the final, sparking pandemonium among the Liverpool fanbase.

Everton must have despised Origi, for he seemed to invariably emerge in the right place and send Liverpool’s rivals in a spin.

Arne Slot had inherited a team of high-class quality, evidenced through Liverpool’s staggering start to the campaign, – the Reds are commandingly atop the Premier League and Champions League tables – but he’d surely take Origi into his brood, simply for the unique, clinical dimension that he offers.

It might not seem like it, but Slot may actually boast his own version of the Belgium international, and his name’s Caoimhin Kelleher.

Caoimhin Kelleher is the new Divock Origi

It’s remarkable that Liverpool have had Alisson sidelined for as much as they have across the past year or two and fans have scarcely felt his absence, for Kelleher has been such a titan between the sticks.

Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

Last season, Klopp claimed that the Irish shot-stopper is “the best number two in the world” but to be honest, he’s probably one of the world’s finest, with his performances proving to be so awe-inspiring for the Redmen.

He’s only made 57 appearances for Liverpool since emerging from the youth ranks, but Kelleher has certainly produced results worth bragging about when unleashed, instrumental in lifting two Carabao Cup titles and the FA Cup too.

Alisson has indeed been absent for much of Slot’s reign so far but Kelleher has stepped up and then some, saving Kylian Mbappe’s penalty as Liverpool defeated Real Madrid in the Champions League group phase.

You could say that his remarkable success in popping up when his outfit need him is reminiscent of Origi, who was never really the number one up front on Merseyside but still played his part triumphantly.

Journalist DaveOCKOP saw it from way back, stating in December 2021: “Kelleher has a bit of Origi about him. When he appears it’s magic.”

The signs were there from the offing, and now Liverpool are reaping the fruits of Kelleher’s development. There must be some part of FSG that bemoan the decision to splash £29m on Giorgi Mamardashvili this summer, with the Georgian goalkeeper snapped up prudently as Alisson’s long-term successor.

Liverpool’s net is sure to be in safe hands with the 23-year-old Mamardashvili, who is back on loan with Valencia for the duration of the current campaign, but Kelleher might actually be operating at the superior level right now.

Market Movers

Football FanCast's Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club's star player or biggest flop worth today?

In any case, Liverpool have triumphed with the Republic of Ireland international, who has actually signed from Ringmahon Rangers in his homeland as a 17-year-old for a £30k figure and has since paid back that outlay for sure.

In fact, given that Chelsea are displaying interest in the monstrous player and have floated figures reaching £35m, Liverpool are going to hit the veritable jackpot when he is sold. When assessing the two sums, Kelleher’s hike in market value can be extrapolated to a 116567% rise – which is absurd.

Origi might be an Anfield star no more, but his spirit certainly lives on. Kelleher is proving to be one of Liverpool’s most clutch sensations of modern times, and if the lofty goals are achieved under Slot’s management this year, he too will cement cult status at this high-flying football club.

Tamim: 'Afghanistan were hungrier than us to win the last game'

The Bangladesh captain says he wants his side to finish in the top four on the World Cup Super League points table

Mohammad Isam28-Feb-2022

Rashid Khan picked up 3 for 37 to help bowl out Bangladesh for 192•BCB

Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal called Afghanistan the hungrier of the two sides following the visitors’ seven-wicket win in the third ODI in Chattogram. Tamim’s frustration stems from his side’s meek surrender in a match that carried ten World Cup Super League points even though it was a dead rubber as far as the series was concerned.Tamim has been stressing on treating every game equally since Bangladesh won the ODI series against Sri Lanka last May. There too Bangladesh played poorly in the third match. He repeated the message ahead of the third ODI in Zimbabwe in July, which Bangladesh closed out successfully. On Monday, they were bundled out for 192, before losing with 59 balls to spare.”Losing back-to-back wickets makes it difficult,” Tamim said. “Three run-outs also didn’t help. If we could have managed 250, we could have probably had a better chance. Credit goes to Afghanistan. They were hungrier than us to win the last game. Rashid [Khan] bowled very well today although we played their spinners really well in the first two games. [Rahmanullah] Gurbaz batted really well.””I wanted the team to finish [the series] on a high and get the maximum points,” Tamim said. Bangladesh currently sit atop the points table, but they have challenging assignments up ahead, and Tamim wants his team to aim for a higher position on the World Cup Super League table, not just be satisfied with the World Cup qualification. The top eight teams on the points table automatically qualify for the global event, with the others facing a qualification tournament.”You don’t know about the future,” Tamim said. “We are playing next against South Africa and Ireland in their conditions. We are playing against England too, so there’s nothing guaranteed. You have to make sure you get maximum points from every opportunity.”If we win one or two [matches], we will probably qualify for the World Cup. [But] it is not my target. My personal target as a captain is to finish in the top four. If you want to claim that you have come to win the 2023 World Cup, it wouldn’t make sense if you qualify as the seventh or eighth team.”His opposite number Hashmatullah Shahidi was glad Afghanistan could grab ten points after conceding the series. Afghanistan end this series at No. 4 on the points table.”Every game was important for us in this ODI series,” Shahidi said. “We were disappointed after the first two games, but that happens in cricket. These ten points will make our future a little bit easier. I am happy how we played.”Shahidi credited the spinners and fielding efforts but he had special praise for Gurbaz who struck an unbeaten hundred.Rahmanullah Gurbaz struck an unbetaen 106•BCB

“I feel very proud of the way we played in this game,” he said. “Gulbadin [Naib] took a great catch [to get rid of Litton Das]. The way Rashid and [Mohammad] Nabi bowled, the three run-outs, all of these were turning points.”The way Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Riaz Hassan started… Gurbaz got injured in the last game, so he was still not feeling good yesterday. When he told me that he is available, I gave him confidence. I told him, ‘You are the one I have belief in.’ I told him that whenever he goes out there, he should try to score a hundred.”He is a match-winner. Whenever he gets a start, he makes it big. We have a bundle of youngsters in the team. Ibrahim Zadran is technically really good. Riaz Hassan gave us a good start today. I am sure they will all play well for Afghanistan in the future.”Tamim too reserved special praise for Litton who had scores of 136 and 86 in the last two ODIs. Litton has turned around his form since the T20 World Cup, scoring hundreds against Pakistan and New Zealand in Tests, and finishing as the team’s highest scorer in this ODI series.”It is really pleasing to see him shining,” Tamim said. “I hope he can continue to do so in the near future. He is a quality player. I think he batted exceptionally well in the second game and today. He was very calm at the start but he never missed an opportunity to score runs.”You had to bat as if you were batting in a Test match because we were playing on a grassy pitch for the first time at home. The ball does a bit. He played the three spinners with a lot of comfort.”

A bola chegou a raspar no travessão.

Ben Duckett ton helps Nottinghamshire wriggle out of Glamorgan clutches

Visitors put down key chances before wrapping up Notts for 302

Glamorgan 33 for 0 trail Nottinghamshire 302 (Duckett 122) by 269 runsOpener Ben Duckett, a potential candidate for an England recall this summer, posted his first century since May last year as Nottinghamshire were bowled out for 302 on the opening day of their LV= Insurance County Championship match against Glamorgan at Trent Bridge.Duckett was dropped on 29, needed treatment after being struck on the hand and took a blow on the helmet batting on what proved at times to be a testing pitch. He made Glamorgan pay heavily for giving him a life, hitting 12 boundaries before he was out for 122, his wicket falling to Australia’s world number one Test batsman, Marnus Labuschagne, making his first appearance of the season for the Welsh county and taking 2 for 11 bowling seam rather than his more usual legbreaks.Skipper Steven Mullaney provided the most significant support for Duckett, scoring 44 as the pair added 116 for the fifth wicket, but Glamorgan fought back against the Division Two favourites to claim the last six Nottinghamshire wickets for 44 runs in the final session, Michael Neser taking 3 for 56.Presented with a pitch with more than a tinge of green, Glamorgan skipper David Lloyd chose to bowl on winning the toss. Nottinghamshire reached lunch two down for 108.Haseeb Hameed suffered an unlucky dismissal, run out on 34 as Glamorgan seamer James Weighell stuck out a leg in an attempt to stop a drive back down the pitch by Duckett and diverted the ball on to the stumps at the non-striker’s end.Yet Hameed had given an early chance off Australian quick Neser, which evaded Sam Northeast at second slip. It was Northeast – who spent the latter part of the 2021 season on loan at Trent Bridge – who dropped Duckett on 29 just before lunch off Lloyd’s medium pace.Northeast held one morning chance, giving Neser the wicket of opener Ben Slater for 17 via a straightforward slip catch.Joe Clarke, who pulled Lloyd for six, maintained an aggressive Nottinghamshire mindset. On 35, however, surprised by a ball from Timm van der Gugten that found some extra bounce, he gloved it on to his stumps. It was a breakthrough that brought a second for van der Gugten in his next over, when he saw Joey Evison dropped at second slip – Northeast again – but then had him leg before pushing forward for a duck, having last week made his maiden first-class century against Sussex.Almost all of the Glamorgan bowlers at times gave away easy boundaries. Mullaney, who made a career-best 192 at Hove, picked up where he left off but was out 10 overs into the final session for 44, caught by Northeast – this time at cover – as he drove Michael Hogan. His departure sparking something of a collapse as Labuschagne had Tom Moores nicking behind before Liam Patterson-White played across the line against Hogan and Labuschagne struck again with a ball that Duckett miscued to give him a simple return catch, Nottinghamshire losing four wickets for 12 runs to be 270 for 8.Neser bowled Brett Hutton to claim the third bowling point for Glamorgan with the second new ball before last-wicket pair James Pattinson and Dane Paterson somehow secured Nottinghamshire secured a third batting point, the Australian former Test fast bowler starting his third stint with a valuable 20 runs before Neser dismissed him via a steepling caught-and-bowled.Glamorgan openers Lloyd and Andrew Salter began the reply brightly, despite Lloyd being caught at second slip off a no-ball in Pattinson’s opening over, adding 33 in five overs before the close.

West Brom must finally ditch £7m dud who Ismael said had “everything”

West Bromwich Albion have become draw specialists in the Championship this season to the obvious frustration of their fans watching on.

After Sunday’s 2-2 draw with fellow promotion candidates Sheffield United, the Baggies are now up to a startling 11 draws in second tier action from 20 total games, as the West Midlands side begin to worry that these near-misses piling up could stunt their promotion chances.

West Bromwich Albion manager Carlos Corberan.

These draws can be stomached easier when you also consider Carlos Corberan’s men have only lost two times all campaign long, alongside the fact top quality stars in attack such as Josh Maja and Karlan Grant are more than capable of firing in the goals needed for an ongoing promotion hunt.

West Brom's quality in attack

Both players in question had arguably been written off in a West Brom shirt before now coming into their own, with Maja injury-prone last season and Grant loaned out to Cardiff City having found his minutes to be infrequent at the Hawthorns.

Maja is up to double digits with ten strikes tallied up from 20 league contests, whilst his 27-year-old teammate boasts five strikes away from the ex-Sunderland man stealing the spotlight, with three of those coming in his side’s last six second-tier clashes.

Ultimately, Corberan will hope more wins come his side’s way off the back of these entertaining attacking displays, as a victory has now eluded his men in their last four outings in the difficult division.

The Spaniard would love to call upon this other option up top if he wasn’t still sidelined with injury to help their search, which has proven to be a major problem for the £7m Baggies buy throughout his stay to date.

West Bromwich Albion striker Daryl Dike.

Why Daryl Dike must finally be sold

There was a notable buzz in the air when Daryl Dike swapped America for the Championship in January of 2022, having shone in the EFL for Barnsley previously, before making the switch to West Brom happen.

Dike would fire home a promising nine strikes from 22 games donning a Tykes strip before the Baggies swooped in, with then West Brom boss Valerien Ismael making him a statement buy after he had got the 6 foot 2 ace purring when the pair were together at Oakwell.

Ismael would even state at the time of his signing that Dike had “everything” you’d want in a top striker, with acrobatic efforts like this one managed for Barnsley understandably exciting those at his new club:

Unfortunately, whilst his spell in South Yorkshire was a dream, his time at West Brom has been nothing short of a nightmare, with the 24-year-old only fit for action 32 times across a gruelling three-season stay.

Looking at the table above, the eight goals next to Dike’s name make for some early positive reading, but the amount of games the former Orlando City man has missed due to recurring injury issues is alarming.

Missing a gigantic 121 games owing to injury – which adds up to 744 days and counting sidelined – a tough conversation will soon need to take place with Dike over his future at the club, with no real concrete update out in the open over when he will next be available for Corberan to select.

Earning a hefty £32.3k-per-week too whilst still being a permanent fixture in the treatment room, selling on Dike down the line when he’s fit enough to exit looks to be the most plausible ending for the American at the Hawthorns.

This would be a very disappointing end for the towering striker at the second-tier outfit, after he was once seen as a signing that could help the Baggies seal promotion back up to the Premier League.

West Brom must axe Albion dud who Bruce thought would be "a massive asset"

West Bromwich Albion could soon be faced with a decision to get rid of this high earner.

Lopetegui’s early reign has been one of real disappointment after the club spent over £120 million on new signings in the summer window, having won just five times over their opening 15 Premier League games.

There are also suggestions that Lopetegui has been clashing with key West Ham players behind-the-scenes, so it has been far from easy for the ex-Real Madrid and Spain boss, who is facing weekly speculation revolving around his position in the dugout.

4-1 loss

Former FC Porto boss Sergio Conceicao has privately expressed a preference over joining West Ham above the likes of Everton and Wolves, and there are numerous other candidates who’ve been linked with the potentially vacant post.

One of them is former Chelsea and Brighton boss Graham Potter, who has been out of work since his sacking by the former mid-way through 2023.

Potter is one of the West Ham managerial favourites, as per reports in the last fortnight, with the former Ostersunds boss also open to taking the job on a short-term contract until the end of the season.

That is according to reliable journalist Ben Jacobs, who also writes for TEAMtalk that Baroness Brady is pushing Potter for the West Ham manager’s job behind-closed-doors.

Jacobs claims there is still a very real possibility West Ham could sack Lopetegui over the next two weeks, depending on results, and Potter remains high on the shortlist alongside other names like Matthias Jaissle, Massimiliano Allegri, Edin Terzic and Conceicao.

What could give Potter an advantage over fellow contenders is his willingness to take the role on a short-term interim basis, a condition both Terzic and Allegri aren’t too keen on.

The tactician has undergone a very different pathway to most other elite English managers – first gaining attention by leading Swedish minnows Ostersunds FK from the fourth tier to Europa League last 32 – but this shouldn’t be seen as a deal-breaker.

“I spoke to Graham last year,” said Wayne Rooney on Potter in 2022, via an interview with The Times. “I had a few hours with him on Zoom, and he went through his journey with me. He was good, interesting.

“You look at Graham, or Arsene Wenger who went to Asia. [Jose] Mourinho has been in different places. Fergie started with small clubs in Scotland. Patrick Vieira managed over here [at New York City FC] and went to France.

“Everyone has a different pathway but they all did what they did to educate themselves and better themselves. Sometimes as a manager you just take the job that’s there, and work your way from there.”
