Arsenal lining up £90m move to sign "strong" star who may replace Trossard

Amid rumours that Leandro Trossard is attracting interest from the Saudi Pro League, Arsenal are reportedly lining up a big-money deal to sign a Premier League replacement in 2025.

Arsenal transfer news

The Gunners have suffered a damning reality check in recent weeks. In search of dethroning Manchester City at the third time of asking and returning to the top of English football, Mikel Arteta’s side have found themselves on the end of results to forget. Starting with defeat on the South Coast against Bournemouth, Arsenal have since drawn against title rivals Liverpool and suffered a surprise defeat at the hands of Newcastle United and Alexander Isak.

Now, potentially making matters worse, Saudi Pro League side Al Ittihad are reportedly eyeing a £40m move to sign Trossard in 2025, leaving the Gunners short within what is already a frontline that could do with sharpening at the best of times.

Arsenal plotting move to sign £25m Kiwior replacement ahead of Man City

The Gunners could finally get one over on their title rivals…

ByTom Cunningham Nov 3, 2024

If the Belgian does leave, however, it seems as though those at The Emirates have quite the plan in place. According to The Sunday People via The Daily Express, Arsenal are lining up a £90m move to sign Mohammed Kudus from West Ham United in a deal that would see the Gunners spend big.

Now 24 years old, Kudus showed plenty of signs that he has the ability to step into a top side last season before struggling since the arrival of under pressure Julen Lopetegui. With that £90m price tag there to be hit, Arsenal could enjoy a fairly simple deal all whilst weakening their London rivals and replacing Trossard, should he depart to Saudi Arabia.

"Strong" Kudus could strengthen Arsenal

Of course, there’s no escaping that £90m would be a staggering transfer fee to spend on Kudus, but that could be the price of sharpening the Arsenal frontline. Given that the former Ajax man can also play as an attacking midfielder too, there’s an argument that he could step in and also provide cover for Martin Odegaard should he suffer any future injury issues.

Mohammed Kudus for West Ham

The £90m man has earned plenty of praise during his time at the London Stadium, including from teammate Aaron Cresswell, who told the Iron Cast via BBC Sport: “I’ve just trained with him and you don’t want to go anywhere near him. I’m up against him all the time and I’m like: ‘Mo, go on over to the left!’ He’s a top, top talent and I think we haven’t seen the best of him yet.

“I won’t go near him in training because I know if I’m going to try to knock him off the ball I had better make sure he’s not looking and doesn’t see me coming. You just can’t get near him. He’s so strong, so quick, so sharp.”

With 18 goals and seven assists last season, Kudus may yet get his biggest move yet to return to such form.

Mahmood, Billings and Sangha propel Sydney Thunder to victory

England quick marks BBL debut with four wickets inside the first three overs of Thunder’s defence of 196

Saqib Mahmood made BBL history before Brisbane Heat’s tail saved some face as Sydney Thunder won by 53 runs at the Gabba. On debut for Thunder, English quick Mahmood became the first man in the BBL and only the 10th person in T20 cricket anywhere in the world to take four wickets inside the first three overs of an innings.Mahmood couldn’t believe his luck when Jimmy Peirson clipped one to deep fine leg, giving him 4 for 9 from just 11 balls after his first delivery was sent to the boundary by Chris Lynn.Lynn, Ben Duckett and Sam Heazlett all fell though, with the chase of the Thunder’s 7 for 196 looking all but over.A horror run-out added to Heat’s misery, the hosts sinking to 5 for 15 inside the first three overs, before bowlers Xavier Bartlett and Mark Steketee combined for a BBL record 79-run eighth wicket stand. That pair’s partnership came too late for Heat to even salvage the Bash Boost point, Steketee eventually falling just as a miracle comeback victory was being entertained.Sam Billings (64 off 27) had earlier powered the Thunder’s innings, the English wicketkeeper hitting five sixes and five fours as he swept both spinners and pacemen over the rope. His innings came after Alex Hales and Jason Sangha had set the tone, leaving Heat a huge chase if they were to win a second straight game.It could have been an even steeper task if not for Mitchell Swepson bowling Sangha around his legs. Bartlett also took two wickets but went for 45 from his four overs, while Steketee also grabbed two wickets on his return from national duties where he was briefly called up to bolster the squad after Pat Cummins’ Covid close contact drama.Thunder held back the in-form Alex Ross until the final over despite him coming off three unbeaten knocks, his last a whirlwind 77 off 49.Ross thought he’d found a boundary, but his lap sweep was well caught by wicketkeeper Jimmy Peirson. He had deflected the ball past his off stump towards fine leg, but Peirson reacted incredibly well to pouch the catch in his left hand.Tom Cooper entered the game as the Heat’s X-factor sub, in for Tom Abell after he jammed his hip while attempting an outfield catch in the second over.

8 duels won, 1 assist: Spurs star was insane in new role for his country

It’s never a good thing to say that the international break has come at the perfect time for your football club, but the international break has come at the perfect time for Tottenham Hotspur all the same.

Ange Postecoglou is trying to whip his talented squad into shape this season but chequered form is preventing Spurs from making headway in the Premier League.

Having been defeated at home against newly-promoted Ipswich Town, who hitherto were winless in the top flight, there’s plenty for the craggy-faced Postecoglou to chew on.

He’ll need his players to return from international action refreshed and injury-free next week, but he’ll still be hoping for some positive performance that could reorient certain struggling players.

How Spurs players are getting on

Cristian Romero has looked out of sorts this season and he won’t be feeling any better after Argentina suffered a shock defeat against Paraguay. Albeit, the centre-half didn’t have all that much to do, winning his one contested duel and completing 95% of his passes, as per Sofascore, before being withdrawn at the break due to injury.

Tottenham defender Cristian Romero

Guglielmo Vicario and Destiny Udogie’s Italy side enjoyed a 1-0 victory over Belgium on Thursday evening in the Nations League, though neither started, the latter introduced for the final 20 minutes.

On Friday, Euro 2024 champions Spain passed a tough test in Denmark and Pedro Porro made his mark at right-back, discernibly deeper than he’s used by Postecoglou, something that he clearly favours stylistically.

Over in Asia, Heung-min Son scored as South Korea defeated Kuwait 3-1. Also away from European competition, Yves Bissouma put in a barnstorming display for Mali against Mozambique in his country’s African Cup of Nations qualifier.

In a new role, he might just have been the pick of the Lilywhites bunch.

Yves Bissouma thrived in fresh role for Mali

Bissouma sits deep in Tottenham’s midfield, controlling and crunching ahead of the defensive partnership, typically Romero and Micky van de Ven. As per FBref, the 28-year-old ranks among the top 4% of midfielders across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for pass completion and the top 7% for tackles won per 90.

Tottenham midfielder Yves Bissouma

A high-energy player with a shrewd eye for a goal, Bissouma might be as combative as they come but he’s also endowed with high-level technicals and was utilised further forward against Mozambique on Friday evening.

Across his five qualifying campaign matches for Mali so far, the £55k-per-week talent has averaged 30 passes per game in the opponent’s half, whereas just seven per match in his own.

There’s perhaps something in that for Postecoglou, who could operate with Bissouma in front of the number six in a kind of roving role. He’s robust and dynamic enough, for sure, having won eight duels, completed four dribbles and picked up the crucial assist in Mali’s 1-0 triumph.

Ultimately, Premier League opponents will be made of sterner stuff, but Bissouma – whose nation have now qualified for next year’s AFCON – still produced an almighty performance and it’s one for his Spurs manager to consider going forward.

Tamim Iqbal steps away from T20Is for next six months

Decision effectively rules him out of T20 World Cup 2022, but he’ll reconsider if team’s circumstances become difficult

Tamim Iqbal has made himself unavailable from T20Is for the next six months, effectively staying out of contention for the T20 World Cup later this year. Tamim, however, said that he could reconsider this decision if the BCB asks him again before the World Cup, although he doesn’t believe it will be required. The announcement follows recent discussions between Tamim and top BCB officials including president Nazmul Hassan, who tried to dissuade him from taking the decision. Tamim had been mostly away from Bangladesh’s T20I side for the past 12 months. In a press conference in Chattogram on Thursday, Tamim insisted that it was a cricketing decision, and that his focus is on Tests and ODIs this year, but he will only reconsider T20Is if circumstances get difficult for the team.”There have been discussions about my T20I future,” Tamim said. “In the last few days, I have been doing meetings with the BCB president (Nazmul Hassan) and Jalal (Yunus) and Kazi Inam (Ahmed). They wanted me to continue T20Is till the World Cup (this year). I had a different sort of thinking. I will not be considering T20Is for the next six months. My full focus will be on Tests and ODIs. We are preparing for the World Test Championship and qualification for the 2023 World Cup. I will not be thinking about T20Is in the next six months. I hope that those playing will do so well, that the team won’t need me in T20Is. But if God forbid the team or cricket board needs me, and I am ready, I will possibly think about it.”Related

BPL draft: Dhaka sign Mashrafe, Tamim and Mahmudullah

Tamim drops out, says other players deserve a chance

Ahead of last year’s T20 World Cup, Tamim voluntarily pulled out of the tournament in order to give the other openers like Litton Das, Soumya Sarkar and Mohammad Naim opportunities. Tamim said at the time that since he missed the lead-up to the T20 World Cup, it was only fair for him to skip the tournament. His last T20I was against Zimbabwe in 2020, after which he missed the rest of the three-match series due to a knee injury.Tamim is Bangladesh’s third highest run-getter in T20Is. He has played 74 T20Is for Bangladesh and four for World XI teams – three in Pakistan in 2017 and one against West Indies at Lord’s in 2018. He has 1701 runs for Bangladesh, at an average of 24.65 and a strike-rate of 117.47, while his overall T20I record is 1758 runs at 24.08 and a strike-rate of 116.96. He is Bangladesh’s only centurion in the format.Till the end of 2018, Tamim was one of the most regular members of the T20I side, having played 75 out of 84 T20Is (89.3%) that Bangladesh played. But in the last three years, he has only played three out of 38 matches.Tamim will continue to play in domestic T20 leagues, having already made two half-centuries for Minister Group Dhaka in the ongoing BPL.Tamim insisted that the new players who will be tried in his place should be given a long rope. He drew an example from his, and other senior Bangladesh cricketers’ early days, to compare the situation for the likes of Naim, Sarkar and Saif Hassan.”We handed chances to a number of youngsters in the last (T20I) series. We cannot lose hope in them quickly. We have to give them time. I think six months is a good enough time. I am pretty confident that I won’t be needed in T20Is. Even then, if the team management or cricket board feels otherwise, I will be open for discussion.”The team has to go forward. You know my stand ahead of the last T20 World Cup (of giving the young openers more opportunities), so it won’t be wise to judge anyone after one or two series. Many of us seniors went through three or four bad series, and then bounced back with maybe three good series on the trot. Considering those who will play in my place, I am sure they will find their feet and do well,” he said.

Apesar do frustrante vice da Supercopa do Brasil no último domingo, é possível tirar pontos positivos do Flamengo diante do Atlético-MG.

West Ham could now sign once-£100m Fullkrug replacement on loan in January

Reputable news outlet The Telegraph have suggested that West Ham United are now contenders to sign a former £100 million-rated striker on loan in January, amid summer signing Niclas Fullkrug’s injury woes at the London Stadium.

Julen Lopetegui seals much-needed West Ham win over Newcastle United

Julen Lopetegui has been under serious pressure right from the very start of this Premier League season, with the Hammers spending north of £120 million in the summer window but not quite living up to expectations.

Manager approves "surprise" exit for star as West Ham eye move to sign him

The Hammers could sign him in January.

West Ham have won just four out of a possible 12 Premier League games, and a fair few of their performances have been rather unconvincing.

There are those who have been left “stunned” at how badly Lopetegui has started overall (Tom Rennie), but their 2-0 win over Newcastle United at St. James’ Park has bought the 58-year-old more time at least.

It was a much-needed three points at a difficult battleground, with goals from Tomas Soucek and Aaron Wan-Bissaka handing the Irons a crucial win and a fine start to club football’s resumption after the last international break.

A very difficult next test awaits West Ham as they prepare to host title contenders Arsenal at home, and Mikel Arteta’s side are beginning to find their best form again after a testing few weeks for the Gunners.

Lopetegui may also be without striker Fullkrug yet again, with the £27 million capture from Borussia Dortmund missing their trip to Newcastle, and he hasn’t played at all since their 3-1 defeat at Man City in late August.

The 31-year-old has been dealing with a persistent Achilles tendon injury, meaning he’s yet to get off the mark for West Ham, and hasn’t been given a chance to justify his price tag.

This has even led to reports that West Ham could offload Fullkrug in January, with technical director Tim Steidten looking at dipping into the loan market for an emergency striker.

West Ham could sign Brighton striker Evan Ferguson on loan in January

Now, according to The Telegraph, it is believed Brighton starlet Evan Ferguson has been made available for a mid-season temporary deal.

They go on to claim that West Ham could be interested in signing Ferguson on loan, as one of the plethora of Premier League sides struggling for goals right now, alongside Leicester City, Fulham and Newcastle.

The Republic of Ireland international is regarded by some as one of the country’s most promising young forwards, with the Seagulls even slapping a £100 million price tag on his head at one point.

Ferguson’s lack of opportunities has seen his valuation fall to around £60 million, and Brighton are apparently willing to green-light a loan, so the 20-year-old can rediscover his best form.

“When you look at him, the way he plays, his appreciation for the game, his movement and finishing both feet, good in the air and good pace,” said pundit Ian Wright on Ferguson (as transcribed by HITC).

Brighton and Hove Albion striker Evan Ferguson.

“He has all the attributes at 18. Very mature in the way he plays. All he has to do is keep doing what he is doing and they are going to start talking about him in million terms because that striker is not allowed. You can’t find that guy to come around, who is 18, in the Premier League and at the perfect club to continue to grow.

“They aren’t going to be able to hold onto that guy if he carries on doing what he is doing. He is too good. So intelligent – for 18, it’s really, really composed finishing.”
