Porro 2.0: Spurs open talks to sign £34m ace with "obscene pace"

It's been a busy summer for Tottenham Hotspur so far this year, both on and off the pitch.

The North Londoners have already secured the services of Archie Gray, Yang Min-Hyeok, and, most importantly, Dominic Solanke.

However, they've also been working on selling players, with Emerson Royal completing his move to AC Milan on Monday for an undisclosed fee.

emerson-royal-tottenham-hotspur-crystal-palace-premier-league-outstanding-revive-mason

This exit means the club is short at right-back, although interestingly, recent reports have linked them to a star who's earned comparisons to Pedro Porro.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

Daniel Levy and Co may have only just completed the impressive £65m capture of Solanke over the weekend, but a recent report from journalist Bruno Andrade has revealed that the club are now interested in signing AS Monaco's Vanderson.

In fact, Andrade has actually revealed that the Lilywhites have already "opened talks with Monaco" and that the French side are "expecting an offer in the region of 40 million euros."

That fee converts to around £34m, and while that's a lot of money, the sale of Emerson means that a new option at right-back is probably needed this summer.

Monaco's Vanderson

Moreover, Vanderson has impressed for Les Monégasques and the fact he's been compared to Porro should encourage fans that this is a deal worth pursuing.

Vanderson's comparison to Porro

So, Vanderson and Porro share one fundamental similarity: they are both very attacking full-backs.

Tottenham defender Pedro Porro

For example, when talking about the Monaco ace, respected data analyst Ben Mattinson described him as "very good going forward", while U23 scout Antonio Mango claimed he is blessed with "obscene pace and acceleration."

Likewise, Mango described the Spaniard as an "aggressive" full-back with "a wonderful low centre of gravity" who is "extremely dangerous" in attack, which is hard to deny when you watch him play.

Vanderson

However, while the praise and analysis help us understand how they operate, you can also see their forward-thinking tendencies in their raw output.

For example, in 37 appearances for the Lilywhites last season, the former Sporting CP gem scored four goals and provided seven assists, equating to a seriously impressive average of a goal involvement every 3.36 games.

Likewise, while he could only make 23 appearances for Monaco last season partly due to injury, the Brazilian defender still scored three goals and provided four assists, meaning that he maintained an average of a goal involvement every 5.75 games, which is still impressive for a player in his position.

Finally, if people are still unsure of how similar the two right-backs are, they only need to look at Football Transfers, which has ranked Porro as the fifth most comparable player to Vanderson across football.

Ultimately, while he could cost the club a pretty penny, bringing the Monaco man in to replace Emerson this summer and fight for a place in the team seems like the perfect way to maximise Postecoglou's attacking philosophy in every aspect of the team.

Therefore, Levy and Co should do what they can to get this deal done, and who knows, another attack-minded full-back in the team could even help Solanke hit the ground running.

Confident Knight Riders out to break the Mumbai Indians jinx

Rohit Sharma’s men have won nine of the last 10 completed fixtures between the sides

Sreshth Shah12-Apr-2021

KKR’s bowling came good in their tournament opener•BCCI/IPL

Big pictureFor Mumbai Indians, there are two things that are as constant as the pole star. One, they don’t win their tournament openers – they’ve lost every opening fixture since 2013. The other is their utter dominance over Kolkata Knight Riders, having won 21 of the 27 completed matches, including nine in the last ten. Therefore, the defending champions should be quite comfortable facing their favourite opponents in search of their first win of IPL 2021.Their defeat to Royal Challengers Bangalore wouldn’t have caused many headaches. Despite their hallowed middle and lower-middle order failing – a failure only because of the high standards they’ve set for themselves – they lost only off the last ball. Their two latest recruits, the tall left-arm seamer Marco Jansen and the big-hitting Australian Chris Lynn proved they were good buys as well, taking 2 for 28 and top-scoring with 49 respectively. It’s just need a question of winning the small moments that they lost in their first game. But this is not the Knight Riders that almost conceded victory whenever they faced Mumbai previously. Under Eoin Morgan, they showed in their opening-game win just how they will be playing this season. They will not be afraid to play the big shots, even if wickets fall in a flurry, and their uncapped Indian batsmen Nitish Rana and Rahul Tripathi are high on confidence after hitting half-centuries against Sunrisers Hyderabad. With the ball, Shakib Al Hasan showed why he has replaced Sunil Narine in the XI and captain Morgan wriggled the side out of few difficult scenarios by using his bowling options smartly. However, the pace unit Knight Riders will be facing will be vastly different from the Sunrisers game, with Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult bringing more pace and hostility. If they can take care of the two quicks, and should their hard-hitting middle-order outscore Mumbai’s powerful counterparts, then they will be well placed to become IPL 2021’s early pace-setters.In the newsde Kock is out of quarantine, has trained with the team, and is available for selection. It’s likely he’ll come in for Chris Lynn, who made his debut the other night. Zaheer Khan, Mumbai’s bowling coach, has also said that Kieron Pollard – and not Hardik Pandya – is their preferred sixth-bowling option, for now. Hardik’s bowling workload is being consciously managed, but he does remain available to bowl.Likely XIs Mumbai Indians: 1 Rohit Sharma (capt) 2 Quinton de Kock (wk), 3 Suryakumar Yadav, 4 Ishan Kishan, 5 Hardik Pandya, 6 Kieron Pollard, 7 Krunal Pandya, 8 Rahul Chahar/Jayant Yadav, 9 Marco Jansen, 10 Trent Boult, 11 Jasprit BumrahKolkata Knight Riders: 1 Shubman Gill, 2 Nitish Rana, 3 Rahul Tripathi, 4 Andre Russell, 5 Eoin Morgan (capt), 6 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 7 Shakib Al Hasan, 8 Pat Cummins, 9 Prasidh Krishna, 10 Harbhajan Singh, 11 Varun ChakravarthyStrategy puntMumbai could play offspinner Jayant Yadav over legspinner Rahul Chahar. Knight Riders’ top seven has three left-handers, and they’ve previously used him specifically for match-ups to left-handers. Mohammad Nabi’s two wickets against Knight Riders on Sunday could tempt Mumbai to take that route. From a numbers perspective: Chahar struggles against left-handers, averaging 59.6 at an economy of over eight against them. Mumbai got Yadav into the XI for the playoff game against left-hander heavy Delhi Capitals last season too. Although Pat Cummins was used as a middle-overs enforcer against Sunrisers, he may be used as a death-overs bowler against Mumbai. Both Pollard and Hardik are less potent against deliveries that are back of a good length or short, which Cummins will be able to execute with high speed. Pandya, especially, struggled against those type of deliveries in the England white-ball series.Stats that matter Chepauk remains one of the few IPL grounds that favours the side batting first. 36 of the 59 IPL games played at Chepauk have been won by the team that has batted first. Since IPL 2019, the average first-innings winning score here has been 171. Mumbai and Knight Riders are the two most consistent six-hitters in the league. Since IPL 2019, Knight Riders hit 8.2 sixes per innings while Mumbai hit 7.8. Bumrah’s economy of 8.0 against Knight Riders is his worst. Karthik has a strike-rate of 192 against him. No batsman has scored more runs in the Powerplay than de Kock (628) since IPL 2019. Rohit holds the IPL record for most runs (939) against a particular opponent (Knight Riders, in this case). If he gets 61 more, he will become the first man to hit 1000 runs against one opponent.Quotes”Rohit is unbelievable against KKR. Having said that, it takes one ball to get anyone out and we need to get him early. He scores against KKR every time, maybe this time he won’t, and then we’ll be able to put pressure on Mumbai.”
“It’s a good headache to have. We are lucky and fortunate to have such a squad where people are waiting to grab those opportunities and pushing each other.”

Clement could solve Propper blow by unleashing Rangers’ "warrior"

Glasgow Rangers return to Premiership action this afternoon following a two-week break and Philippe Clement will be aiming to secure another three points.

The start to the 2024/25 season hasn’t been great as the Light Blues have won just twice in all competitions, already slipping two points behind Celtic in the title race.

A 2-0 win over St Johnstone last weekend saw the Gers progress to the quarter-finals of the League Cup, but it is clear that performances have to improve going forward.

The clash against Ross County at Hampden Park today is the ideal opportunity for the team to finally deliver a confident display from start to finish.

Clement will be without a few of his first team regulars for the tie against the Staggies, which could see some rotation of his starting XI.

Rangers team news vs Ross County

Clement spoke to the media ahead of the weekend clash, detailing who was out injured for the Light Blues and who could return to the team.

He said: “Leon (Balogun) has returned. Robin (Propper) is a doubt for tomorrow but will be available next week. Oscar Cortes, I expect in training next week. A small muscle issue with Scott Wright has him a doubt.”

Seeing Cortes back in training is a big positive for the manager, as the young talent could make a big difference out wide.

Oscar Cortes

Losing Robin Propper for the tie against County will be a blow for the club, however, as the Dutch defender was settling in rather nicely at the club.

Robin Propper’s statistics so far at Rangers

Since joining from FC Twente a couple of weeks ago, the 30-year-old has already made three appearances for the Light Blues, playing in the Premiership, League Cup and Champions League.

On the early evidence, Propper could be a solid signing by Clement, displaying his abilities in the 2-1 league win over Motherwell a couple of weeks ago.

Indeed, the centre-back took 104 touches while finishing the game with a 91% pass success rate, showing he is always keen on getting on the ball in order to circulate the ball well.

Propper’s strength in one on one battles will also prove to be an excellent trait going forward, as he won 70% of his aerial duels against the Steelmen, along with making two tackles and one interception.

His loss could be felt today, and with Ben Davies seemingly close to a loan move to Birmingham City, Clement isn’t exactly blessed with options to partner John Souttar at the heart of the defence.

Thankfully, Leon Balogun is back to full fitness following a brief injury and this could see the Nigerian veteran come straight back into the starting XI against County this afternoon.

Leon Balogun’s Rangers statistics

The defender initially joined the Light Blues in the summer of 2020, arriving as one of Steven Gerrard’s signings ahead of the unbeaten title-winning campaign.

He played his part in the success, making a total of 28 appearances for the club before becoming an integral part of the first team the season after, playing 37 times as the Gers reached the final of the Europa League.

Two seasons, two trophies. Not a bad haul indeed. Yet he was released that summer after the expiration of his contract.

A spell at QPR yielded little success, and he was soon back in Glasgow, joining on a one-year deal last summer, initially thought of as cover for the main defensive options under Michael Beale.

Balogun ended up playing 19 times, including 14 Premiership games as he continued to showcase his abilities.

The 36-year-old kept seven clean sheets in these games, was dribbled past on just 0.3 occasions per game and won 7.3 total duels per game – a success rate of 68% – not bad statistics at all considering how few chances he got in the starting XI.

These performances led to the club giving him a one-year extension to his contract. It was a wise move, especially considering he knows the league inside out and the expectations that come with playing for Rangers.

Clement even hailed Balogun as a “warrior” after he suffered a facial injury during a win over Livingston last term and these fighting qualities will stand the club in good stead.

Clement must unleash Leon Balogun against Ross County

It appears as though he could be playing a more reserved role this season, as Clement seems to favour a partnership of Souttar and Propper.

With the Dutchman out injured for the clash against County, Balogun should be brought straight into the starting XI, especially after a couple of solid cameos during the first two league matches.

Leon Balogun

The 6 foot 2 titan has averaged only 24 minutes in the matches against Hearts and Motherwell so far this season, yet the 36-year-old has won a staggering 81% of his total duels, lost possession only five times on average per game and committed zero fouls.

His experience will come in handy as County travel down to Glasgow, as a win will set up the Light Blues nicely for the tie against Celtic a week later.

There could well be another centre-back signed before the end of the transfer window, especially considering Davies is close to joining Birmingham, but that shouldn’t mean Balogun’s impact will diminish.

Ben Davies

The veteran still has plenty to offer in a supporting role, gaining the trust of the manager and his teammates due to his abilities at the heart of the defence.

Whatever happens, securing three points against the Highland outfit in Glasgow this afternoon is all that matters.

A win would continue the momentum heading into one of the most important Old Firm derbies in recent memory for the Gers.

A win against Celtic could give Clement a boost which may turn Rangers’ fortunes around. Another defeat, however, and they could be waving goodbye to the league title after just a handful of matches.

Arsenal are beginning to unleash their very own answer to Haaland

It's not very fair is, it? Come on Erling, these people have families. The rampant Norwegian is proving to be the usual source of chaos, chaos that once all is said and done will probably see Manchester City beat Arsenal to the Premier League title for the third year in a row.

Haaland is a robot, an alien, a footballing juggernaut who destroys everyone and everything in his wake.

As Arsenal slumped to a 1-1 draw with Brighton in Saturday's lunchtime kick-off, Man City responded in emphatic fashion. Well, their striker responded.

Pep Guardiola's main man was at it again at the London Stadium to down West Ham in brutal, mesmerising fashion.

Haaland's performance against West Ham

The Norway international's hat-trick against Ipswich Town the weekend prior felt inevitable. Kieran McKenna's men performed some admirable business in the transfer window but very little can prepare you for the onslaught of Haaland.

The Tractor Boys went 1-0 up but the powerhouse forward responded by knocking three goals past them. Well, he was at it again against West Ham on Saturday evening.

Another hat-trick was notched up to take his early season tally to seven goals in three outings. For anyone who doesn't have him in their fantasy team, quite frankly, what are you playing at?

This is an unstoppable beast and the way in which he took his trio of goals in the capital two days ago was freakish. The second was a rasping crunching effort that soared past the goalkeeper and the third, out of nowhere, was quite magnificent.

Haaland ran in behind and comfortably slotted the ball past substitute goalkeeper and former Arsenal man Lukasz Fabianski as if he wasn't even in the net.

So, good luck Gunners. Truly, good luck finding a way to beat Man City when they have him up front.

How do they respond? Well, despite not adding a centre-forward to their ranks over the summer, they are beginning to build quite the weapon up front.

Arsenal's answer to Haaland

Now, hear us out, but Kai Havertz does have similar attributes to Haaland.

He may not have the goalscoring prowess – although that is improving – but he has a lengthy build that ensures he is a nightmare for defenders, boasts remarkable strength and is left-footed.

That last one is rather tenuous, admittedly, but like we said, hear us out for a few minutes, he has come a long way since his blase attitude was said to be "like Mesut Ozil" by Paul Merson.

Standing at 6 foot 4, the £65m signing from Chelsea is actually the same height as City's no.9. So, there's the first box ticked.

Where else are they similar? Well, they've got that style of play that looks rather effortless. The German has already been compared to a figure like Dennis Bergkamp and it's clear to see why.

He may not be as graceful as the great Dutchman but like Haaland, that wirey frame and the long strides they possess come in handy when looking for two things; someone to hold the ball up and someone to regularly hassle defenders.

Until recently, Havertz had been playing as more of a false 9 in the Arsenal team. Yet, in 2024/25, he's been given the keys to become the leading man. The way he took his goal against Brighton on Saturday was Haaland-esque, racing onto a ball in behind and plonking the ball over Bart Verbruggen.

Stylistically there are also clear differences. Haaland has pace. Havertz isn't blessed hugely in that department. The numbers do tell us something interesting though, even if we can't quantify their biggest similarity; strength.

As we noted above, there are clear differences in some areas. Havertz is more creative, boasting more progressive passes per 90 minutes. There is a reason former teammate Roberto Hilbert once declared the Germany international has "some things Ozil had". This time we're comparing the two Germans in a positive light.

That said, they aren't really too dissimilar in the carrying department. They don't complete an awful number of passes per 90 minutes and defensively they've actually been relatively on par this term, leading the press with 0.67 tackles apiece.

There is little chance that Havertz ends up ending the campaign as prolific a goalscorer as Haaland but both of them, with their languid and rangy playstyles, will prove key in the destination of this season's Premier League title.

England coach Chris Silverwood and elite pace bowling lead Jon Lewis were in attendance to see his progress on Thursday, when Archer underwent a full session of batting and bowling in the nets, followed by some running work.He was back at the ground on Friday, doing some sprints on the outfield during the lunch break of Sussex’s match with Yorkshire, in which England captain Joe Root is also playing.”The England and Wales Cricket Board has confirmed that England and Sussex bowler Jofra Archer will not play in the 2021 Indian Premier League,” the ECB said in a media release on Friday. “Archer returned to bowling this week with higher intensity, and the ECB and Sussex medical teams will continue to monitor his progress.”The ECB pointed out that Archer was “expected” to return to playing cricket in the “next fortnight” if he could “bowl and prepare pain-free.” It is understood that Archer could return to playing in a second XI match in the next fortnight followed by a Championship game for Sussex in mid-May.The Royals were initially optimistic about Archer’s return, accounting for the strike bowler missing out on at least their first four matches in the league phase. Such optimism evaporated soon after the ECB said on April 11 that while Archer would be returning to training there was no date set for his return to playing. The other big deterrent for Archer, who was the Most Valuable Player in IPL 2020, was the mandatory week-long quarantine participants have to serve upon entering the IPL bubble this season. All three concerned parties, Archer, the ECB and the Royals, agreed that it would interrupt the fast bowler’s preparation and bowling build-up.Archer returned to England in March after T20Is in India for surgery on his right hand to remove fragments of glass wedged in during a fish tank accident at home in January. Simultaneously, Archer also received treatment for a longstanding elbow injury for which the fast bowler has taken cortisone injections. At the outset of this IPL, Kumar Sangakkara, the former Sri Lanka captain and now the Royals’ team director, had said while Archer’s unavailability was a “big blow”, the franchise could not act “selfishly” and would take a “holistic view” about his return.
