European giants open to selling "great" £50m+ Man Utd target; talks ongoing

With talks ongoing, one European giant are reportedly open to selling Manchester United's target this summer in a deal that would go a long way in solving Erik ten Hag's midfield problem.

Man Utd transfer news

Whilst their summer business is yet to officially get underway, Manchester United have already stolen the headlines on more than one occasion, whether that be for their reported interest in Joshua Zirkzee or the likes of Matthijs de Ligt. The former has been particularly high up on the Red Devils' wishlist and may yet arrive to finally put an end to United's goalscoring problems in the coming months.

De Ligt

Goals weren't the only problem at Old Trafford last season, however. Ten Hag's midfield also struggled as Casemiro's action-packed career finally showed signs of catching up to him at 32 years old. The bright spark was Kobbie Mainoo, who emerged from United's academy before breaking into Gareth Southgate's Euro 2024 squad, and may start England's last-16 clash against Slovakia this Sunday.

Alas, at 18 years old, the Old Trafford star can't be tasked with improving United's midfield on his own and that's where one target could come in this summer.

He’s one for the future.

ByTom Cunningham Jun 29, 2024

According to Fabrizio Romano, Paris Saint-Germain are now open to selling Manuel Ugarte this summer, and talks with Manchester United remain ongoing in pursuit of agreeing a deal to sign the midfielder valued at over £50m this summer. The Red Devils have already reportedly seen one bid rejected for the Uruguay international, but seem likely to go again in the hope of reaching PSG's reported valuation ahead of next season.

"Great" Ugarte can ease the pressure on Mainoo

As impressive as the rapid rise of Marcus Rashford was, going from academy graduate to certified star, the forward is now paying the price for bearing the heavy responsibility of carrying the Red Devils from such a young age.

Those at Old Trafford must learn from that harsh lesson when it comes to Mainoo. The 18-year-old may be ready to start week-in, week-out for Ten Hag, but putting the pressure solely on him to transform the heart of the Dutchman's side may only see a repeat of Rashford's struggles.

Previously described as "great" by Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig, signing a player of Ugarte's calibre could ease that pressure and allow Mainoo to step things up even more for the Premier League giants.

With negotiations reportedly ongoing, United's summer business may well get underway sooner rather than later in an attempt to solve last season's problems.

Gloucestershire have announced the signing of Daniel Worrall, the South Australia seamer, as an all-formats overseas player for the 2021 season.Worrall, 29, has had two brief stints at the club in the past, playing six games at the start of the 2018 campaign and two Royal London Cup fixtures in 2019 before a season-ending back injury. The club have struggled to a find an overseas player who is available for the full season since Michael Klinger’s retirement from first-class cricket ahead of the 2017 County Championship, instead largely relying on homegrown players and occasional short-term signings in red-ball cricket. They had signed Jerome Taylor, the former West Indies seamer, as a Kolpak player before the Covid-19 pandemic and he was due to move to an overseas deal after Brexit, but ESPNcricinfo understands that contract is not likely to be fulfilled. They had also signed Qais Ahmad and AJ Tye for last summer’s T20 Blast before their deals were cancelled due to international travel restrictions.ALSO READ: County ins and outs 2020-21Having initially made his name as a red-ball bowler, Worrall has developed as a limited-overs option in recent seasons, taking the new ball for Melbourne Stars in last season’s Big Bash League as they reached the final.”I am grateful for the opportunity to come back to Gloucestershire as I feel I have plenty of unfinished business with the club,” Worrall said. “I am confident that I’ll be able to come to the UK and make a difference in the new season.”I have played a couple of seasons with Gloucestershire and love being in Bristol. The squad has had a couple of changes and the injection of some young talent into the group is exciting for the future of the club.”Richard Dawson, the club’s head coach, said: “First and foremost, Dan is a quality opening bowler who has shown previously at Gloucestershire how highly skilled he is, especially in English conditions.”He’s a great person to have in the changing room and to have a new-ball bowler for the whole season is a positive boost not just for the bowling attack but for the whole squad.”

He’s a Kilman upgrade: Wolves have strong interest in £25m defender

Wolverhampton Wanderers have made a solid start to their transfer business so far this summer, signing Tommy Doyle, Pedro Lima and Rodrigo Gomes as Gary O’Neil looks to flood his side with young talent.

The Old Gold will also have to sell a player or two in order to balance the books, but it remains to be seen who will follow Max Kilman out the exit door.

Wolves manager Gary O'Neil before a Premier League game.

The defender joined West Ham United for a £40m transfer fee recently, yet the manager is eyeing up a replacement for the player…

Wolves eye move for Kilman replacement

According to Caught Offside, Wolves have what is described as 'strong interest' in Strahinja Pavlovic as they seek to land a replacement for the departed Kilman.

Serbian defender Strahinja Pavlovic

The Old Gold face some stiff competition, however, as Chelsea and Aston Villa eye a move for the Serbian centre-back, while Newcastle United and AC Milan are keen admirers too.

The asking price for the current RB Salzburg defender stands at €30m (£25m), which may prove to be a stumbling block for the Molineux outfit, despite raking in £40m from the sale of Kilman.

Pavlovic featured for Serbia at Euro 2024 and there is no doubt the defender would be an excellent signing this summer.

How Pavlovic compares to Max Kilman

The 23-year-old shone at Euro 2024, although Serbia were knocked out in the group stage. Across three matches, he won 8.7 total duels per game – a success rate of 70% – made 3.7 tackles per game and recovered four balls per game.

It was hardly surprising given how impressive he was at club level last term. Defensively, he won a staggering 8.8 total duels per game while making 2.5 tackles and recovering 7.3 balls per game.

The centre-back also demonstrated his forward-thinking abilities, as when compared to his positional peers, Pavlovic ranked in the top 1% for successful take-ons per 90 (0.73), along with ranking in the top 9% for progressive carries per 90 (1.28) in leagues similar to the Austrian Bundesliga.

Max Kilman for Wolves

In comparison, Kilman failed to rank in the to 30% for both progressive carries and successful take-ons per 90 when compared to his own positional peers across Europe’s top five leagues, showing that Pavlovic is a clear upgrade in terms of bursting forward from defence.

With regard to defensive stats, Kilman averaged 4.2 total duels won per game, made 1.2 tackles and recovered 4.7 balls per game in the Premier League last season.

Comparing both defenders, there is only one winner. Pavlovic would be an ideal signing to fill the void left behind by the Englishman, and it is something O’Neil really has to consider.

Talent scout Jacek Kulig described him as an “old school CB” during the 2022 World Cup as Serbia came up against Cameroon, Brazil and Switzerland.

£25m may prove to be a lot on the surface, but if Wolves are aiming for a top-half finish in the league next season, a player of Pavlovic’s ability is a must.

Shan Masood, Mohammad Abbas, Haris Sohail dropped from Pakistan Test squad

Haris Rauf one of several new faces as new chief selector Mohammad Wasim names his first squad

Shan Masood, Haris Sohail and Mohammad Abbas have all been dropped for Pakistan’s two-match Test series against South Africa in a dramatically overhauled squad. The home series, which kicks off in Karachi on January 26, also sees several newcomers in the 20-man squad, with Haris Rauf, Imran Butt, Kamran Ghulam and Salman Ali Agha among a slew of players brought into the fold.Babar Azam has recovered sufficiently to take over the Test captaincy from Mohammad Rizwan, who deputised for the batsman in New Zealand, where Pakistan lost both Test matches. He is set to take charge of the red-ball side for the first time, and has been handed a squad which could feature several first-timers, with new chief selector Mohammad Wasim ringing the changes in the first squad he has been tasked with naming.Once the No.1-ranked ODI bowler in the world, Hasan Ali is back in the Test side after a supremely successful Quaid-e-Azam Trophy season, which ended with him being named player of the tournament. The 26-year-old Central Punjab bowler took more wickets than any other quick all season, with 43 at 20.06 per scalp. After a number of years out of the game with a back injury which still needs careful tending to, Ali has appeared to regain the yard of pace he lost through 2019 and 2020, which resulted in him losing his central contract and dropping out of Pakistan contention completely. Moreover, Pakistan have struggled with runs lower down the order, and Ali’s ability with the bat – he scored a hundred in the final of the QeA Trophy – looks set to count in his favour. Some of the omissions are enforced, however. Shadab Khan continues to nurse the groin strain that kept him out of the Test series against New Zealand, while a hamstring niggle has put paid to any chances of Naseem Shah’s involvement.27-year-old offspinner Sajid Khan gets a call-up to the senior side for the first time after finishing the QeA season as the most prolific wicket-taker, with 67 for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Yasir Shah, Nauman Ali and allrounder Mohammad Nawaz are the other spinners in the squad, while 36-year old Sindh fast bowler Tabish Khan has a shot at a possible late-career bloom should his domestic form be rewarded with a Test cap. With Masood struggling badly for runs since scoring 156 in Manchester in the first Test against England last summer – he managed only 33 runs in his following eight innings, including four ducks – one of Abdullah Shafique or Imran Butt looks set for a Test match debut this series. Imam-ul-Haq’s ongoing thumb injury means there’s a vacancy at the top alongside Abid Ali, and with both Shafique and Butt part of the squad that travelled to New Zealand, they both have a clear opportunity to press their claim for that slot. The tour of South Africa comes at a time when head coach Misbah-ul-Haq and bowling coach Waqar Younis find their positions under further scrutiny than at any time since their appointments 18 months ago. Earlier this week, the PCB cricket committee met to analyse the team’s performances, terming them disappointing, and resolved to meet again following the series against South Africa.Significantly, this is the same committee that put an end to Mickey Arthur and Grant Flower’s tenure as head coach and batting coach respectively in 2019, and retains the power to recommend changes once more if they feel they are merited. The decision to meet after the series is viewed as the clearest indication that the fates of several members of the team management could hinge on its outcome. The 20-man squad will be whittled down to 16 in the coming days. The South African side is set to arrive in Pakistan on a chartered flight tomorrow (January 16) and will be tested for Covid-19 upon arrival and form a bio-secure bubble for the duration of the tour. They will quarantine until January 20, when they will be tested again before a decision is taken on when the side begins training. The first Test begins on January 26 in Karachi, with the second on February 4 in Rawalpindi. The sides are then set to play three T20Is in Lahore to round off the tour.Pakistan Test squad Abid Ali, Abdullah Shafique, Imran Butt, Azhar Ali, Babar Azam (c), Fawad Alam, Kamran Ghulam, Salman Ali Agha, Saud Shakeel, Faheem Ashraf, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Rizwan, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Nauman Ali, Sajid Khan, Yasir Shah, Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Tabish Khan

Imagine him & Kilman: West Ham very keen on "exciting" defender

As the 2024/25 Premier League season fast approaches, teams are beginning to race for their main targets in the transfer market, looking to bolster their squads ready for the new season.

Julen Lopetegui has already got the wheels in motion, with the new additions of Max Kilman and Luis Guilherme at West Ham this summer, but it doesn't look like it is going to stop there for the Hammers.

West Ham are currently looking at more possible recruitment, with plenty of center forward links, left-winger appreciation such as Crysencio Summerville, right-full-back focus with links to Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and even a partner for new centre-back Kilman.

West Ham's hunt for another defender

According to reports from talkSPORT, West Ham are among the clubs who are said to be 'very keen' on Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah, who has recently been left out of their pre-season tour squad. Crystal Palace are also reportedly interested in the English defender.

Chalobah made 17 appearances for Chelsea last season in all competitions, scoring one goal, and contributing to three clean sheets in his 1,227 minutes of football.

Trevoh Chalobah

He has been described as an "exciting" talent by analyst Raj Chohan on X, referencing his ability to anticipate danger, positioning to cut things out, and ball-playing ability.

Chalobah and Kilman as a partnership

The right-footed Chalobah, and left-footed Kilman both stand at 6 foot 3. This could provide a very strong base, with a mixture of physicality, recovery speed, aggression and on-ball ability.

Both players are comfortable on the ball, Chalobah showing this with Chelsea (a more ball-dominant side), averaging 74.02 passes attempted per 90, and a 89.4% success rate.

Whilst Kilman played in a less ball-dominant side, he doesn't have as good numbers, averaging 60.76 passes attempted per 90, and an 85.7% success rate.

However, Kilman has the ability on the ball, is very composed, and these metrics are slightly lower due to style of play, rather than his individual ability.

The current partner for Kilman would most likely be the Frenchman, Kurt Zouma. However, if Chalobah was to join, this would likely become Kilman's main partner. Therefore, it's worth looking at the metrics of both Chalobah and Zouma.

Whilst many of the passing metrics could be down to style of play for Zouma – much like Kilman at Wolves – it isn't even close in the ball playing stats, Chalobah bettering the current Hammers centre-back for passes attempted, completion rate of passes, and progressive passes.

This could imply Lopetegui's desire for ball-playing defenders, and a change in style for West Ham, from the more pragmatic, counter-attacking philosophy of David Moyes.

Kurt Zouma for West Ham

Jacek Kulig (Football Talent Scout on X) has labelled Chalobah a "monster", referencing his stats when he broke into the Chelsea side under Thomas Tuchel, back in 2021. West Ham could be set for a bargain, therefore, and a perfect partner to their already expensive defensive signing of Kilman.
