Exclusive: Liverpool must back Klopp to land Teixeira – Barnes

Liverpool should back Jurgen Klopp with a serious move for Alex Teixeira in the summer, if the German still wants the Shakhtar Donetsk ace.

The Brazilian attacking midfielder was strongly linked with a move to Anfield during the closing stages of the transfer window just gone, but a deal proved too expensive with the Ukrainian giants refusing to dip below their £38m valuation.

Missing out on Teixeira has come as a blow, with the 26-year-old’s 22 league goals in 15 games this season suggesting he could have helped to increase the Reds’ potency in the final third – they’re the lowest scorers in the Premier League’s top eight with 30 in 24 games.

Since the close of the window reports have suggested that Liverpool may go back in for him this summer, and TitanBet brand ambassador Barnes told FootballFanCast he’s hopeful his old club will re-visit the deal:

“If the manager likes him and he fits in to what he wants then they should go for him.

“I know he’s a very good player. He’s quick, he’s strong, but there are lots of players that are good. Obviously he [Klopp] likes him, that’s why they went for him, but whether they went for him because they thought there was a chance in January and there are other targets for the summer, I don’t know.

“Klopp likes him, so I think he will go back for him in the summer.”

However, Barnes is glad that Liverpool didn’t spend over the odds for Teixeira.

When asked if he was disappointed to see a deal fail to come to fruition, the Kop idol said:

“Not necessarily. If they wanted him badly enough in January they would have got him, and obviously they didn’t want him that badly. I don’t think they [Liverpool] should be held to ransom.

“Fans may be disappointed, and I understand that, but the club has a budget for players, and if the other club wants more money, then a deal won’t happen.”

Newcastle winger and manager lambasted for shocking first-half Chelsea display

Chelsea took a commanding 2-0 lead inside nine minutes of action at Stamford Bridge against Newcastle United.

Unlike the reverse fixture between the two earlier this season, where a vibrant Toon side shell shocked the lethargic Blues, the Premier League champions took full control of proceedings early on.

While that was largely down to their excellence, the inefficiency of the Magpies largely helped them out.

Particularly young Rolando Aarons. Granted, the 20-year old is having to deployed in an unfamiliar left-back role, but his poor pass led to Pedro racing through with just the ‘keeper to beat.

Manager Steve McClaren has had his hand forced somewhat due to the injury crisis dogging his squad currently, but has still come under fire for his decision to play Aarons at left-back.

Jack Colback, who can certainly do a job in the role, is sat on the bench, much to the dismay of the Geordie faithful.

10 tweets that prove unfortunate Everton star won’t get the respect he deserves

Poor old Leighton Baines. Due to the fact the Scouse mod-rocker had the excellent Ashley Cole to battle with for most of his career, his talent wasn’t recognised at international level often enough.

30 England caps is a respectable tally no doubt, a haul which hundreds of hopefuls would envy, but perhaps not a fair reflection just how good the 31-year old was in his prime.

However, after a season marred by injury, it appears the former Wigan defender has succumbed to the foe that ultimately gets us all, Old Father Time.

Despite being one of the best operators in his position – one of the few left-backs who took his defensive duties as seriously as his attacking ones – Baines has no doubt dropped in form.

Despite the England national side’s constant disappointment, few can doubt their strength at left-back. Not that it helps an awful lot, but still, we need something to cling on to.

Baines has been the biggest victim of that. Few could have displaced Cole, who has one of the best in the world, but the notion of replacing him in the role has almost utterly disappeared.

Luke Shaw will presumably be the long-term option going forward, while the likes of Ryan Bertrand, Danny Rose and Aaron Cresswell surely provide better options.

Caught between two times, Baines is unlikely to be given proper respect for just how good he was in his prime.

The five greatest Champions League finals of all time

The Champions League Final is here! Real Madrid vs. Atletico Madrid sees two of the world’s biggest clubs facing off in one of the world’s most famous stadiums for the greatest prize in club football.

The San Siro has seen some incredible games over the years – it’s the home of both AC Milan and Inter Milan after all – and has hosted three previous finals.

Only the world’s top clubs get to compete for the big prize and Barcelona of course won the trophy last season, but who will win it this year in Milan?

The two Madrid clubs battled out in the Champions League final just two seasons ago as Real Madrid triumphed 4-1 to win ‘La Decima’ (their tenth European Cup). Although the match looked like a walkover for Real, the game was a lot closer than the scoreline suggests, with Atletico leading 1-0 until the dying seconds of the 90 minutes before Real Madrid ran away with the game in extra time.

But here, we look back at the FIVE best Champions League finals of all time.

FIVE – Celtic 2-1 Internazionale

In 1967, Celtic became the first British team to ever win the Champions League – back then, the trophy was called the European Cup – but this game was a match to be treasured for football history. Every Celtic player on the pitch was born in Glasgow and the game was a real fairytale for the Scottish side. Inter played with a defensive mindset and took the lead early on, but Celtic rallied on and replied with two goals to win the match, Bobby Murdoch with the winner, and becoming an instant British hero.

FOUR – AC Milan 4-0 Barcelona

AC Milan finished this season in a miserable 7th position, but the Rosseneri used to be an incredible side. Milan have won the European Cup seven times and this was perhaps their greatest victory. The 1994 final saw Barcelona absolutely battered and out-classed by the Italians who ran away with the game and left Barcelona embarrassed. It was definitely one of the greatest final performances of all time.

THREE – Manchester United 2-1 Bayern Munich

AND SOLSKJAER HAS WON IT! Manchester United won the second of their three European Cup titles in 1999 in the most dramatic fashion. Bayern Munich took the lead at the Camp Nou in just the 6th minute of the match, Manchester United grabbed an equaliser with what looked to be the last kick of the game through Teddy Sheringham but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer snatched the win for United deep into injury time. United scored two goals in a matter of minutes to snatch the trophy from Bayern Munich’s hands.

[ad_pod id=’greatest-players’ align=’center’]

TWO – Real Madrid 7-3 Eintracht Frankfurt

The fifth ever European Cup final is to this day, the record holder of the highest attendance and the most goals. Real Madrid won the cup for the fifth year in succession, this year the Madrid giants are hoping to claim the trophy for the 11th time. This game in 1960 saw just two players grab the goals for Real Madrid, 4 from Ferenc Puskas and a hat trick from Alfredo DI Stefano completely swept away the German side.

[ad_pod id=’greatest-players’ align=’center’]

ONE – Liverpool 3-3 Ac Milan

And of course, Liverpool vs. AC Milan, you knew it when you clicked on the gallery. Milan stormed to a 3-0 lead at half time through goals from captain (and oldest Champions League final goalscorer ever), Paolo Maldini and a further two from Hernan Crespo. Astonishingly Liverpool recovered from the three goal deficit and brought the match back to 3-3 in a staggering six minute spell, with Steven Gerrard, Vladimir Smicer and Xabi Alonso rescuing the match for the Reds. An inspired performance from Jerzy Dudek, in which he made a few incredible stops from Andriy Shevchenko, took the game to a penalty shootout where Liverpool triumphed 3-2 thanks to Dudek’s heroics.

In Istanbul… WE WON IT 5 TIMES.

Five signings to keep Middlesbrough in the Premier League

After a pulsating 1-1 draw on the final day of the Championship regular season with Brighton, Middlesbrough confirmed their return to the top flight for the first time since 2009. Boro pipped the Seagulls to automatic promotion on goal difference to join Burnley in the Premier League next year and now attention is turning to how best to go about the transfer window this summer.

With the new TV deal coming into play, the North East club will have better funding than most of the sides to have ever come up into the top division of late and this will prove vital in their quest to stay in the big time for more than just the one season.

Promoted sides are usually some of the most active teams during a transfer window and with the new riches winging their way to each of next season’s 20 clubs, Middlesbrough will be looking to do plenty of business. It’ll be tough to stay in one of the world’s most competitive leagues but here at FootballFanCast we think signing these FIVE players would go along way in helping them do that.

Michel Vorm

Dimitrios Konstantopoulos has been a permanent fixture for Middlesbrough this year, featuring in every Championship game, keeping 22 clean sheets in the process. Impressive stats to say the least with the best defensive record in the league but keeping out Premier League attackers is a completely different proposition.

Konstantopoulos, at the age of 37, doesn’t have many years left and Boro may want to make the change now before the Greek veteran shows the inevitable signs of decline.

Someone like Michel Vorm would be ideal for Boro. He has Premier League experience and knows how to stay up from his Swansea days. Add in that he doesn’t currently play for Spurs and the Dutch international becomes an attractive option, and one that would surely jump at the chance for first team action.

Ross McCormack

Looking at Middlesbrough’s strikers, there’s a surprising lack of goals.

David Nugent has eight in 38 games, Cristhian Stuani seven in 36 and Jordan Rhodes six in 18. Whilst Rhodes came in halfway through the season, more had been expected of him and, if Jermain Defoe at Sunderland tells us anything, proven goalscorers stave off relegation. Rhodes may still come good but the Riverside club should bring in McCormack, who’s done wonders for a poor Fulham side scoring 21 goals and providing 9 assists.

Moussa Sissoko

Since Rafa Benitez joined Newcastle Sissoko has shown off the ability many suspected he had.

He combines strong running and an eye for a pass – he had made six assists this season – to make him a good box to box midfielder. He would add the required energy to compete in the midfield in a Premier League and would surely fancy another crack at the top flight after Newcastle’s relegation.

Idrissa Gueye

Gueye’s efforts have unfortunately been shrouded by the ongoing shambles at Aston Villa.

The midfielder would have been in for a strong chance for winning Player of the Year at the club had their awards gone ahead. Gueye tried in vain to halt the slide of the Midlands side, with his better passing percentage than N’Golo Kante and almost identical interceptions per game figures as the Frenchman illustrating his efforts. Gueye deserves another go, and could be an inspired signing if Middlesbrough go for him.

Gaston Ramirez

Although already at the club Ramirez is only currently on loan in the North East. The Uruguayan has found it difficult to settle in Britain but seems to have finally found a solid footing at Boro.

Seven goals in 18 games make for eye-catching reading from midfield and if the deal can be made permanent, Ramirez might finally be able to realise his potential at the Riverside next season.

Four top strikers that should be on Wenger’s Arsenal list

Arsene Wenger has already missed out on Jamie Vardy and could lose out again.

Alexandre Lacazette, who appears to be linked with most clubs, looks as though he is being lured away by Juventus to Serie A. That means that both Premier clubs, Arsenal and long-time admirers, West Ham, will have missed another opportunity to sign an overpriced striker from France.

Since Mr. Wenger will not pay over the odds for anyone, Lacazette’s increasingly spiralling fee will put the Frenchman off and his search for a quality forward will continue.

Arsenal have pots of money to spend and so far Wenger has been reluctant to use much of it, much to the chagrin of the supporters.

However, this season, Arsenal really do need better than Olivier Giroud or someone alongside to help the French striker, as he continues to be one of the most inconsistent in the Premier League.

So, here are FOUR alternatives for Wenger to ponder…

Karim Benzema

Arsenal were linked with the frontman 12 months ago, but nothing came of it, but now, Real Madrid might want to sell.

Los Blancos are after Bayern’s Robert Lewandowski. If they get their man, Benzema could be on his way out and Wenger will surely want to snap him up. Madrid President, Florentino Perez is a big fan of the Polish striker, although Zidane wants to keep his fellow countryman at Real.

At 28, Benzema has been tracked by Wenger since his days at Lyon. 111 goals in 215 appearances is reason enough to pursue this striker.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

The Borussia Dortmund striker was thought to be heading to the Etihad not so long ago, but Wenger is more than just a little interested in the 27-year-old Gabon striker.

54 goals in 94 appearances for the Bundesliga star means that there will be a race for the pacey forward. One the deadliest strikers in the world just now, Aubameyang bagged 39 goals last season in 49 appearances, but doubts as to whether he will leave have increased in recent days. Dortmund are being picked apart by clubs and could see up to four of their stars leaving this summer, so they’ll fight to keep ‘Auba’, one would presume.

[ad_pod id=’1617-transfers’ align=’center’]

Stefan Jovetic

The Inter forward is still considered the most likely player to move to the Emirates this summer. The Montenegrin, according to Sport Mediaset, who are one of a number of media outlets linking the player with a switch to north London, suggested that he was not part of Roberto Mancini’s plans at San Siro.

Jovetic signed a permanent contract with Inter from Manchester City following an 18-month loan deal not long ago, yet a fee of around £13m could see him wearing the red and white of Arsenal.

[ad_pod id=’1617-transfers’ align=’center’]

Romelu Lukaku

The Everton man is being targeted by Wenger behind the scenes.

The Belgian is away on international duty at the moment, but it is said that Lukaku is open to joining Arsenal. Chelsea also want their ex-player back, but Arsenal appear to be leading the chase for the Belgian forward after reportedly agreeing personal terms.

4-3-3… The big money Everton XI Koeman could build after Lukaku & Stones sale

The appointment of Ronald Koeman at Everton has brought with it a dose of excitement amongst  the Everton faithful.

Koeman did a fantastic job with Southampton, improving the side year-on-year despite selling big names, and consolidating their position in the Premier League.

Conversely, Roberto Martinez saw his side slip down the table during his tenure in charge of Everton, failing to get the best out of his stars and seeing his side get worse year-on-year.

Foeman’s appointment is expected to bring change at his new side, but not before a dose of familiarity for the ex-Southampton boss. Both Romelu Lukaku and John Stones are both expected to be sold this summer for big money, leaving Everton with a gaping hole in their first team – but with a huge boost to the sides bank account.

As a result, you would expect that the side will dip into the transfer market in the coming weeks and attempt to pump some of that money right back into the side.

With that, this BIG MONEY 4-3-3 Everton XI that Ronald Koeman could build might just be unstoppable…

GK: Marteen Stekelenburg

Martin Stekelenburg was Koeman’s first signing as Everton boss, with the Dutch keeper a veteran between the sticks.

He seems a shoe in to get the nod ahead of Roubles next season, with the new keeper possessing a wealth of experience and knowledge, whilst he is also familiar with Foeman’s methods.

A well versed, experienced keeper; a great way to start.

RB: Seamus Coleman

Probably the easiest slot to fill in this whole team; and he’s one of their own.

Seamus Coleman has been one of Everton’s stand out stars in recent years, and is a shoe in to continue his dominance on the right hand side of the defence.

Strong both offensively and defensively; he really is the complete full back – and Everton have done great business by holding onto him.

CB: Ashley Williams/Mateo Musacchio

Football – Nottingham Forest v Swansea City – Pre Season Friendly – The City Ground – 15/16 – 25/7/15Swansea’s Ashley WilliamsMandatory Credit: Action Images / Alan WalterEDITORIAL USE ONLY.

The first change in this new look Everton side comes at the back, with the club seemingly keen to replace the imminent departed John Stones.

The club have reportedly enquired about Valencia centre back Mateo Musacchio, whilst Sky Sports have confirmed that a bid has been put in for Swansea captain Ashley Williams.

Both stars would come at a high cost; but both defenders are absolute stalwarts.

A worthy, and dare I say it BETTER, replacement for John Stones

CB: Phil Jagielka/Ramiro Funes Mori

Depending on whether one of those new central defenders, it seems likely that it will be a competition between Jagielka and Funes Mori next season for the other spot in the middle of the defence.

Both played well last season and are deserving of their place, but with only one spot going – one will have to miss out.

Phil Jagielka is of course a leader of the side, and so likely seems a shoe in; but his age makes it unlikely that he will play each week.

It will be interesting to see which one Koeman goes for; but both are stellar defenders.

LB: Leighton Baines

Leighton Baines came back from injury towards the tail end of last season, and looks over the worst of his fitness issues.

On form there is nobody better in his position in the Premier League, and fans will no doubt be hopeful  that he returns to his best form.

CM: Idrissa Gueye

Everton’s newest signing, Idriss Gueye recently completed his move from the recently relegated Aston Villa.

A stellar midfielder, the £10+ million signing will seemingly head straight into the Everton first team.

With James McCarthy running out of time to impress, and Gareth Barry getting on at 35; it could be an opportunity for Gueye to establish himself at his new side.

 CM: Ross Barkley

Ross Barkley may well find himself the only remaining member of the most discussed Everton trio, with Stones and Lukaku likely departing; but that may give him the confidence and role that he needs to really kick on.

Playing more advanced than his two midfield partners, Barkley will look to run at opposition defences and thread balls through for his new number 9.

On his day he is a star; next season will be a coming of age for young Ross.

 CM: Morgan Schneiderlin

Rumours linked new Everton boss Ronald Koeman with a reunion with ex-star Morgan Schneiderlin, who has been unable to break through at United, a few weeks ago; but those rumours never came to fruition.

It seems likely that cost was the main stumbling block in that potential move, with Mourinho likely to be keen to sell; but with the Stones and Lukaku money – now could be the time to pull the trigger on the deal.

Fantastically defensively and able to transition play between defence and attack; Schneiderlin is the complete midfielder – and would be able to reignite his career under Koeman once again.

 LW: Julian Draxler

Considering the calibre of club that are interested in Julian Draxler, this deal is unlikely – but what a signing it would be.

The German winger has recently revealed that he wants to leave Wolfsburg this summer, and has touted the Premier League as his ideal destination.

A natural left winger, Draxler possesses real pace and dribbling ability, making him a menace for opposing defences.

Everton may be able to convince Draxler to come to Merseyside with a hefty pay check; which the sale of Stones and Lukaku would allow. What a coup and what a signing he would be.

 ST: Mario Mandzukic

With Romelu Lukaku on the move, Koeman will no doubt be targeting a big money replacement; and the latest big name linked with the club is ex-Bayern Munich front man Mario Mandzukic.

Currently at Juventus, Mandzukic has been knocked down the pecking order following the signing of Gonzalo Higuain; and Everton are reportedly keen to bring the striker to Merseyside.

He has been prolific wherever he has been, and looks a perfect fit for the Premier League. Likely available at a fraction of the price that they may get for Lukaku; this looks like great business.

 RW: Gerard Deulofeu

Gerard Deulofeu had to settle for a rotational role with Everton last season; but the young Spaniard now finds himself at a crucial point in his career.

At 22 years old, he is just starting to reach the age where he will be expected to kick on and find his best form; and under a new boss with the right opportunity he could do juts that.

He has all the talent in the world; he just needs a chance to express it with weekly game time. Expect this one to be a BIG season for the young winger.

Over the moon…. Arsenal fans react to Walcott’s Basel performance

There was a time, not too long ago, when Theo Walcott was the scapegoat for many of Arsenal’s problems.

It’s true, the winger has had a pretty tough time of it and seemed to hit rock bottom last season with him being the subject of a lot of criticism and derision.

That all culminated in him missing out on a spot in England’s EURO 2016 squad and for many, it looked as though leaving Arsenal could be the best way forward for him.

But oh, how things have changed. All credit to Walcott, as he’s taken the flak and come out the other side swinging with a number of good performances. He’s scoring goals and looks hungry for more with arguably his best performance of the season coming last night in the Champions League against Basel.

He scored two at the Emirates Stadium as the Gunners swept aside the Swiss outfit, and his showing has left Arsenal fans purring. Here’s what they’ve had to say on Twitter…

Cresswell comeback can’t come soon enough as West Ham prepare for Palace

According to reports from Sky Sports, West Ham left-back Aaron Cresswell will be part of the matchday squad to face Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday.

What’s the word?

Cresswell’s yet to feature for the Hammers this term after suffering a horror injury in pre-season (video below) against Karlsruher. It was initially reported that he could spend up to six months on the sidelines but the left-back has healed quicker than expected and is in the Hammers squad to face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in Saturday’s 5.30pm kickoff.

Although it remains to be seen whether he’s fit enough to start, manager Slaven Bilic said of the 26-year-old; “Aaron Cresswell is back and looks sharp. He will be in the squad for Saturday and we will then make a decision.”

A big boost for the Hammers?

Most definitely. Cresswell has been one of the Hammers’ best performers since signing from Ipswich Town in 2014, with many calling for him to be handed a place in the England squad. Likewise, Bilic’s boys have suffered defensively in his absence, conceding the most goals of any side in the Premier League – a staggering 17 – and picking up just four points from their first seven games, leaving them in the relegation zone.

Cresswell isn’t the greatest of defenders; his game is more about making runs on the overlap and getting balls into the box with via a lethal left foot. But defences are all about familiarity and balance, something Cresswell’s return should provide.

Any other team news?

Havard Nordtveit and Jonathan Calleri have both returned to full training, but West Ham’s casualty list is pretty long. Summer signing Gokhan Tore, arriving on loan from Besiktas, is the latest member and out for up to six weeks with a quadriceps injury. Likewise, long-term absentees Andy Carroll, Diafra Sakho and Andre Ayew are still stuck on the sidelines.

Five images that tell the story of Spurs’ clash with Leicester

Leicester’s trip to Spurs this season does not have quite the same riding on it as their matches last season. The title contenders from 2015/16 are no longer clashing directly at the top of the table, but it still presented a tricky, enticing fixture for Spurs.

The game flung one way to the other. It was meant to be fun and it provided all the drama we could have hoped for at the start of the day. Fired up players and two managers fully focused on the game made for the contest that we had expected to see at White Hart Lane. Neither side held anything back, there was not even the suggestion of keeping energy in reserve, it was a full-blooded contest for the entire 95 minutes or so that the players were on the pitch.

An eventual 1-1 draw was a relatively fair result. Leicester played in the way we expect Leicester to play now and Spurs played how Spurs play. No pretences, no caution, just two sides competing with their all.

And we know you’re wondering quite how the game panned out. So, here are FIVE images that tell the tale…

Vincent Janssen’s troubled start at Spurs might not be quite over yet, but the striker has had some gentle relief in the form of penalty kicks.

After emphatically thumping home from 12 yards against Liverpool in midweek, Janssen opened the scoring from the spot against Leicester.

They competed like two teams on level footing, with hard tackles flying in from both sides. Cards a natural consequence of that and Jamie Vardy drew some of the referees attention as everyone would have expected.

It was a fiery match in parts and not the most comfortable game to officiate.

Near misses were not a rarity for Spurs on Saturday afternoon, as they failed to win their fourth straight game in all competitions.

Although they are still unbeaten in the league, difficulties finding the net from open play continued in this game and will have Mauricio Pochettino a little concerned.

Waves of late pressure from Spurs were broken up by the odd attack for Leicester, but nothing could split the two sides come the final whistle.

Two of the Premier League’s cheeriest mangers left knowing it could have been worse, although they’ll be wondering why they didn’t quite do enough to snatch victory.
