Everton fans think Toffees aimed cheeky dig at van Dijk in Gomes announcement video

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Everton fans have been reacting to Tuesday’s huge club announcement, as the Toffees confirmed the signing of Andre Gomes.

Everton have completed the signing of Gomes for a fee of £22m, reports Paul Joyce of The Times.

The Portuguese international has penned a five-year deal, which will keep him at the club until he is 30.

Of course, Gomes is already a hugely popular figure on the blue half of Merseyside, having spent the 2018/19 season on loan at Goodison Park.

He scored once and provided two assists in all competitions last season, hardly a prolific return from a central midfielder, but it’s his composure on the ball and superb technical ability that really stands out.

And fans have noticed something showing off that skill in the club’s announcement video, which included a clip of Gomes bouncing off Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk while running with the ball.

The Dutchman was not dribbled past once all season, stats claim, but Toffees fans are loving the club’s cheeky dig at their red neighbours.

The Verdict: Should Leeds sign Mark Travers?

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United have a lot of areas that need strengthening in the upcoming transfer window, but none may be as crucial as the goalkeeper position.

Kiko Casilla has been a tremendous flop since joining the club in January, and he may be on his way out of Yorkshire after just six months, while Bailey Peacock-Farrell doesn’t seem competent enough to be trusted as the number one for a team battling for promotion.

The latest rumour is that Marcelo Bielsa’s side will target Mark Travers as their new stopper as United are set to look into a loan signing for the 20-year-old.

The youngster is a largely unproven quantity at this level, having made just two Premier League appearances last season. Of course, he could be quality if he joins, but Leeds aren’t in a position where they can take any risks.

Football FanCast’s writers have attempted to dissect this story and deliver their verdict as to whether or not Leeds should sign him.

Matt Dawson

“With Kiko Casilla potentially leaving then bringing in a new goalkeeper must be at the height of Leeds’ priorities. However that being said, it’s difficult to work out whether Travers would be a good signing for the Yorkshire club. He’s a promising stopper and as we’ve seen with the likes of Ward, Henderson and Johnstone in recent years, signing relatively inexperienced ‘keepers on loan from Premier League clubs can work wonders. This seems like a positive step in the right direction.”

Billy Meyers

“Mark Travers was in heroic form against Tottenham on what was just his first Premier League appearance towards the end of last term. He showed real top-flight ability in that game, and appears to have the potential to become a very good glovesman – Leeds would be making a shrewd move if they sign Travers.”

James Beavis

“Yes, they should. Mark Travers impressed in his two Premier League appearances for Bournemouth towards the end of the 2018/19 season, and he clearly has the ability to seriously challenge Kiko Casilla next term. Marcelo Bielsa clearly isn’t convinced by Bailey Peacock-Farrell having not brought him back into the XI even when his Spanish teammate was struggling, so it is clear that a new face is needed. Travers ticks all of the boxes for what Bielsa needs, and he would be an excellent loan addition.”

West Brom fans have their say on Filip Krovinovic

[ad_pod ]

West Brom have been fleeting between the good and bad this year. Darren Moore was of course sacked, they failed to achieve promotion, but now they have the experienced Slaven Bilic at the helm.

He appears to be relishing the opportunity to get stuck in and he’s already been busy in the transfer market.

Express & Star confirmed this week that Albion had agreed a loan deal with Benfica for Filip Krovinovic, a 23-year-old attacking midfield player.

Reacting to the news on Twitter, West Brom fans shared both optimistic and cautious views on the potential arrival.

One fan claimed that he was exactly what Albion needed and a further supporter said he was an exciting prospect.

Another fan expressed his excitement at a deal for Krovinovic but was quick to note he knew little about the player. One individual hoped the deal was now wrapped up quickly.

The Croatian found it a struggle to get into Benfica’s team last term, making just 12 appearances in all competitions.

He did have a slightly more promising 2017/18 campaign, though, scoring twice across 19 matches.

Celtic face battle to land Jack Stacey

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Celtic are interested in signing Luton Town full-back Jack Stacey this summer, but now face competition for his signature from English Premier League side Bournemouth, according to The Daily Mail.

What’s the story?

Stacey was key man for the English Championship club last season, making 45 appearances in League One and directly contributing to 12 goals as they won the division and gained automatic promotion.

With the 23-year-old’s contract expiring next year, there now appears to be an opportunity to land a good value deal for the player, with the paper reporting that Bournemouth and Celtic are both in the hunt.

Celtic fans aren’t happy about Arsenal’s bid for one of their key players…

How badly do Celtic need a right-back?

The Hoops have already made three summer signings so far, but none of them have come in their most depleted area of the squad.

Christopher Jullien has arrived to compete in the centre of defence, with Luca Connell also joining to add competition to the midfield.

The club announced Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo as their latest signing on Thursday evening, who will provide much-needed back-up for Kieran Tierney, also protecting against the potential sale of the Scotland international.

Celtic have lost Mikael Lustig, Cristian Gamboa and Jeremy Toljan at right-back though and they must turn their priorities to that position, with just the inexperienced Anthony Ralston currently available.

Some ex-Celts, such as Jackie McNamara, are unimpressed with that option and with Europa League qualifiers less than a week away, the Hoops need a viable right-back in the door, whether that’s Stacey or not.

The deadline for adding a player to the squad for the first round against FK Sarajevo is 11pm on Thursday, with the option to add two wildcard options by Monday July 8 at 11pm.

The Bhoys simply cannot enter the season with just one extremely inexperienced right-back, which makes their pursuit of Stacey or a similar player absolutely crucial over the coming days and weeks.

Leeds fans excited by Alfie McCalmont after first-team debut

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United fans on Twitter have been giving rave reviews after young midfielder Alfie McCalmont made his first-team debut in a friendly against York City.

The fanbase have been excited about the prospect of the 19-year-old becoming a part of Bielsa’s plans for some time now, and on his first appearance, he didn’t disappoint.

He has previously been named as one of Leeds’ brightest young talents, and he has been capped at under-19 level for Northern Ireland.

He looked calm and composed in the middle of the park against York, and fans of the club were impressed by his performance.

Of course, it was only against a National League North side, but the supporters still liked what they saw from the young man.

It remains to be seen whether or not he will be handed a league debut in the upcoming campaign, but if the teenager can continue to produce impressive displays throughout the rest of pre-season then he’s certainly got a chance.

Spurs fans left confused by ridiculous transfer report

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur fans have been left confused by a frankly ridiculous transfer rumour from El Confidencial.

They claim that Real Madrid could buy Giovani Lo Celso from Real Betis in a deal worth €40m (£35.8m) plus Mariano.

That would then allow the club to bid for Spurs’ Christian Eriksen by offering the north London club the chance to take the Argentina international in part-exchange.

Spurs have been heavily linked with a move for Lo Celso this summer as they look to bring in further transfers to a squad that has already been reinforced with both Tanguy Ndombele and Jack Clarke.

Real, too, are said to be keen to sign Eriksen in this transfer window, with the Denmark international reportedly identified as an alternative to Manchester United’s Paul Pogba.

But Spurs fans do not believe the rumour, insisting that it is genuinely ridiculous to think Real would sign a player, only to then move him on straight away.

Manchester United: Club looking to use Phil Jones as part of Harry Maguire deal

Phil Jones is being considered by Manchester United as a potential makeweight in any deal to bring Harry Maguire to Old Trafford, according to The Telegraph.

Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers has blasted the two bids for the England centre-back, labelling them as ‘not anywhere near’ the valuation placed on Maguire, per the Metro, while ESPN suggest the Foxes value him at £80m.

He said: “Harry is a top-class player, and has attracted the interest of a number of clubs.”

“Any conversation with me and a player would be private. If a team like Man City or Man Utd are interested, I understand the attraction. We’re relaxed because until the valuation is met, there’s not a decision to be made.”

Obviously, Jones has had persistent injury problems during his time at Manchester United, with Transfermarkt collating the former Blackburn youngster has missed over 10 games a season since 2013/14.

Indeed, former Manchester City boss Stuart Pearce even questioned the decision to hand him a new deal earlier this year when speaking to talkSPORT, suggesting he didn’t believe the 27-year-old was worthy of a contract extension due to his injury issues.

Still, it’s not as if the England international doesn’t pull his weight when he does play. Indeed, he recorded the third-most (WhoScored) blocks and interceptions of anyone in the United squad last season, so his game obviously does have some pluses.

Sir Alex Ferguson was a very big believer in the England centre-back, and Jones’s statistics last season in comparison to Maguire’s show he can still come good for the Red Devils.

Last season showed that Maguire and Jones were similar in all defensive areas bar clearances made per game. Jones won more tackles (1.1), interceptions (1.3), committed fewer fouls (0.5), and made the same number of blocks (0.6) than Maguire. These stats show that the two players aren’t too dissimilar, so perhaps splashing £80m on Maguire would be somewhat unwise.

Rangers would be glad to get any money for Eros Grezda, says Jackie McNamara

[ad_pod ]

Pundit Jackie McNamara has told Football Insider he believes Rangers would be happy getting anything close to their original fee for Eros Grezda.

What’s the story?

McNamara thinks Steven Gerrard and director of football Mark Allen would be glad to get a fee even remotely close to the £1.8m they paid for the Albanian, never mind make a profit.

Gerrard brought the winger to the club last August from Osijek but he’s been far from a hit at Ibrox in the past year.

The 24-year-old played just 17 times in his debut season for the Light Blues, contributing to a measly three goals. This disappointing form has lead to links away from Ibrox as the club look to ship out the deadwood during a busy summer.

And McNamara says the Gers would be doing well to recoup their initial outlay on the winger, stating: “There’s a player that we’ve not really seen much of since he’s been there. I think if they can get anywhere near their money back they’ll be happy with that.”

Time to go

The former Scotland international’s comments come amid rumours that two Ligue 1 sides are looking to end Grezda’s horror spell at the Gers. According to Soccerlink.fr, the winger is a target for Dijon and The Scottish Sun reported that French top-flight counterparts Brest have joined the race for his services.

With a new bumper TV deal set to kick in next season, we might begin to see more French clubs start to splash the cash soon. But even with all the money in the world, you’d be hard-pressed to find someone with the lack of sense to give Rangers anything close to what they paid for the former Osijek wide man – two goals and one assist in a relatively weak division is truly shocking for an attacking player.

Also, given he’s unlikely to feature at all this season for Rangers with four new wingers arriving this summer, you’d imagine the club will just want him off the wage bill, and that desperation to flog him will hardly do his ever-decreasing value any favours.

McNamara is almost certainly right about Grezda’s potential fee, but the one crumb of comfort for Gerrard is that at least there is interest in his flop.

Arsenal fans react as Eddie Nketiah linked with loan move

[ad_pod ]

Despite emerging as one of the real shining lights of Arsenal’s pre-season this summer, it appears Eddie Nketiah could be spending the upcoming season away from the Emirates.

The highly-rated 20-year-old burst onto the scene in north London with a dramatic brace against Norwich in the League Cup, but has found first-team opportunities rather hard to come by.

Now, BBC Sport journalist David Ornstein has tweeted that Bristol City, amongst a host of other domestic and foreign clubs, are in talks to sign the striker this summer on a potential season-long loan deal. Leeds also want the forward, per BBC.

After hearing the news Nketiah could be set for a spell away, Arsenal fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the update.

[ad_pod ]

Some Gunners supporters thought a season of regular minutes in senior football would do the young prospect the world of good, and backed him to enjoy a similarly impressive campaign as when Jack Wilshere moved to Bolton back in 2010.

Others however raised concerns over how Unai Emery’s side would potentially be left without a back-up striker if Alexandre Lacazette, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Nicolas Pepe all start together.

Douglas Luiz can be a Premier League sensation now work permit saga has closed

[ad_pod ]

It is impossible to talk about Douglas Luiz without first touching on two words that have followed his short career around like a stray mutt. Those two words are work permit.

When the young Brazilian was signed by Manchester City in July 2017 for £10.7m he was immediately loaned out to Girona, the Spanish club that the City Football Group had recently acquired a majority stake in.

This made sense threefold because that summer Girona had achieved promotion to La Liga for the first time in their history, meaning the midfielder could acclimatise to European football in the challenging environs of a league similar in tempo and style to the one he had just left behind with Vasco da Gama.

Furthermore, Luiz was a highly regarded number six and it was in CFG’s best interests to maximise Girona’s chances of remaining in the Spanish top flight by loaning them the best of City’s peripheral talent. That close season also saw the temporary secondment of three other emerging stars.

The last consideration was that in Spain work permit issues for South American players are more lenient than in England and it couldn’t hurt Luiz’s cause – should he prove himself a success and return to the Manchester City ranks – if he boasted numerous appearances against Barcelona, Real Madrid et al.

Watch Aston Villa Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

The first two aspects of Luiz’s move worked like a charm. Girona finished a very respectable tenth while the youngster made 15 outings, not overly impressing but showing enough glimpses of his ability to break up play and pick a pass to retain Pep Guardiola’s attention.

It was with the work permit issue where the masterplan came unstuck. With City having missed out on signing Jorginho and in need of a back-up for the ageing Fernandinho, they turned to Catalonia.

Only the Premier League’s criteria is trenchant on a player needing to be a full international and/or be exceptional enough to have a first team spot presumed. Luiz was then 20 with only a handful of under 23 games for the Selecao under his belt. Everyone also knew that Fernandinho was the main man for the defensive midfield job at the Etihad.

Exasperated at the situation City sent him back to Girona and here he thrived, making considerably more impact in considerably more games.

And so eye-catching were his performances that Aston Villa thought they would chance their arm and take advantage of the circumstances with a £15m bid, aware that, for them, the latter of the Premier League’s conditions stands up. They succeeded too and in Douglas Luiz they have a steal.

In 2018/19 the 34-year-old missed 91 days through injury and, had he not been on loan, it can be reasonably assumed that Luiz would have featured in at least several games of a campaign that saw City crowned as champions.

More so, City’s insistence that a buy-back option to be inserted into the deal suggests they’re acutely aware of the calibre of player they’re letting go.

That City exercised a similar buy-back clause to re-sign Angelino proves that it’s one the champions are willing to exercise and not merely a ploy to spare their blushes further down the line.

Luiz is a player who could very conceivably settle and excel at the hub of what is already a strong Villa midfield.

Now the work permit has finally been sorted Dean Smith can consider how to introduce him into the fold.
