Get him in: Liverpool fans want James Maddison to arrive this summer

[ad_pod ]

A number of Liverpool fans have called on their club to move for Leicester City attacker James Maddison in this summer’s transfer window.

Maddison has impressed during his first season in the Premier League – scoring seven times and contributing seven assists in the top flight of English football.

The 22-year-old, who mainly operates in the number 10 position but can also play wide, penned a long-term deal with the Foxes upon his arrival from Norwich City last summer.

However, there is absolutely no question that the attacker’s head would be turned if Liverpool – Champions League finalists for the second successive season – were to make an approach for the Englishman.

A whole host of Liverpool supporters have been on social media discussing Maddison, and it would be fair to say that the majority want him to arrive on Merseyside ahead of the 2019-2020 campaign.

A selection of the Twitter reaction can be viewed below:

Zinchenko much more important to Manchester City than you might think

Manchester City have one hand on the Premier League, a sign of their brilliance leading up to the last game of the season. If you’ve just recovered from Vincent Kompany’s late, late winner on Monday night, it could be time to get ready to party again tomorrow…

Indeed, to have held off Liverpool throughout the season is one hell of an achievement and Pep Guardiola will likely (as per the Telegraph some time ago) then be rewarded with a gigantic budget in the summer, as a token of the owner’s appreciation.

Obviously, it is a hard task to pinpoint exactly where City could improve because of the positions many would have said straight away is left-back. Because of Benjamin Mendy’s struggle with injuries, a number of players have tried their hand at the role, including Oleksandr Zinchenko, who is now the starter in that role.

Zinchenko, (who is valued at £13.5 million on Transfermarkt) has once again been used at left-back this season but suddenly to great avail.

After struggling initially last season when drafted in to play that role, Zinchenko has since deputised for his World Cup-winning teammate extremely well. With that in mind, Guardiola must make use of the Ukrainian international rather than turning to Mendy next season, as the Citizens have been unstoppable with him on the field.

In his 13 Premier League appearances, Zinchenko and City have won every single won of them, keeping ten clean-sheets as well in the process. The 22-year-old has provided three assists during those appearances, whilst his defensive capabilities have massively improved as well.

Manchester City count themselves extremely lucky to have such a versatile player within their ranks as Oleksandr Zinchenko can play anywhere from left-back, to central-midfield. He has shown great maturity throughout the season and has adapted brilliantly to the role in which Pep Guardiola demands he performs.

Instead of spending millions on a new left-back, City should really consider sticking with Oleksandr Zinchenko and help him progress even more in the coming seasons.

Exclusive: Danny Pugh says Leeds must prioritise keeping Bielsa if they don’t go up

[ad_pod ]

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, former Leeds player Danny Pugh highlighted the one thing that United need to prioritise if they are not promoted to the Premier League this season.

The Whites were in the running for the top two throughout the campaign only to fall at the final hurdle and be resigned to the playoffs.

The 36-year-old made it clear as to what he thought the Yorkshire club’s first move should be if they aren’t triumphant in the postseason.

What’s been said then?

The Port Vale midfielder put a lot of his old team’s success down to Marcelo Bielsa’s influence this season, and he believes it is imperative that they ensure he stays next season.

“If Leeds don’t go up I think that they should do everything they can to keep hold of their manager,” said Pugh told Football FanCast.

“Leeds are built for the Premier League, and it would mean absolutely everything to the fans to see them back there, and the best chance of that happening is with Bielsa in charge.”

Bielsa must stay

The Argentine has made the Whites genuine promotion contenders while largely using the same squad that finished 13th last season.

Perhaps if the former Marseille manager would have had a bit more backing in the transfer market or a little more squad depth, then the club would have gone up automatically.

If the Whites don’t win the playoffs, then they must do everything they can to keep Bielsa at Elland Road.

The 63-year-old has completely transformed this squad, and if he were to depart the club, then they could easily slip back into mid-table obscurity.

Bielsa has a chance to leave a legacy at Leeds by getting them back to the Premier League after 15 years, and if the club allows him to walk away after just one season in charge, it may prove to be their biggest mistake ever (don’t need “ever” here) in years to come.

Arsenal: Kostas Manolas can take Gunners to the next level

If you were to ask an Arsenal fan what area of the pitch they believe needs the most work, the most common answer would be the defence.

The Gunners have at times been laughable this season due to some of the horrific defensive errors and lack of organisation that saw Unai Emery’s side finish outside the top-four for a third consecutive year, and work is expected to be done this summer.

Charlie Nicholas (via the Metro) believes Shkodran Mustafi should leave this transfer window with the German centre-back the main culprit for Arsenal’s shoddy defending and the north London side are highly expected to bring in one or two more defenders to improve the quality of what Emery has at his disposal, and a big name has been rumoured.

According to Il Messaggero, Arsenal are ready to activate Kostas Manolas’ £31 million release clause this summer as the Greek defender looks to move on from AS Roma after five years in the Italian capital if they don’t finish in a Champions League spot come the end of the Serie A season.

Manolas, who is valued on Transfermakrt at £40.5 million, has been rumoured with a move to Arsenal ever since his days at Olympiakos, and now the Gunners have the golden opportunity to finally secure the signature of the 27-year-old defender, who will be a game-changing signing for Emery.

It’s been a long time since Arsenal had a solid duo in the heart of the defence, but with Manolas, that will become a problem of the past with Sokratis and Rob Holding already at the club and both more than capable of complimenting the Greek in the starting XI.

Arsenal have long sought to sign Manolas, and this summer will be the perfect chance to bring in the man who will transform the club’s defence, and take them one big step forward into becoming an elite team again.

Arsenal fans, would Manolas change the team for the better? Let us know!

Transfer Focus: New Bielsa deal seemingly not enough to convince Phillips to stay

[ad_pod ]

According to reports in the Daily Mail, Aston Villa are the latest Premier League team to show an interest in Kalvin Phillips.

Norwich, Bournemouth and Newcastle are also apparently sniffing around the 23-year-old, and it seems almost inevitable that the Whites’ star man will be playing in the top flight next season.

Too good

Phillips’ performances over the past 12 months have shown that he has outgrown the Championship.

The midfielder has become one of the most valuable players in the division after the arrival of Marcelo Bielsa allowed him to show off his best attributes.

The destructive work he has done in the United midfield this season has shown his potential suitors precisely what he is capable of when he is deployed correctly, and his talents look like they would easily translate over to the Premier League.

Aged just 23 Phillips has a long career ahead of him, and if he wants to fulfil his aspirations of winning silverware and getting England caps, he has to move away from Elland Road.

Can’t keep him

Despite the fact he is a local lad and has played for the club for many years it seems impossible for United to keep hold of the midfielder.

Even though Bielsa has now signed his new deal, the rumours of Phillips’ departure haven’t subsided, and it seems just a matter of time before he leaves.

Although he has played his best football under the Argentine another season at Elland Road doesn’t come close to matching the allure that the Premier League has.

More money, chances at silverware and the potential to play international football is just too much of a pull for any young player, and unless the Yorkshire club get to the top flight soon, they will continue to see their best prospects poached by top-flight clubs.

Youri Tielemans would be right at home with Manchester City

Carabao Cup winners. FA Cup winners. Premier League winners. Pep Guardiola and his Manchester City team really are incredible, serial trophy collectors.

Their magnificent feat of 98 points, eclipsing Liverpool’s total of 97, was a sign of their relentless nature and never-say-die attitude.

To think they could have been 10 points behind the Reds had they lost to them in January is remarkable, because fast forward four months, and it’s Man City’s name on the trophy.

As ever, Guardiola will surely be demanding more. More from his current players and more from his superiors, so he can continue improving his team.

You may think, where can Manchester City improve? But bearing in mind that Fernandinho is 34 and David Silva 33, the future of central midfield needs to be taken into consideration.

So who is good enough to play for the Cityzens? Step forward, Youri Tielemans, who is currently being linked with a move to the Premier League champions (The Sun).

The Belgium international (who is valued at £19.8 million on Transfermarkt) enjoyed a brilliant loan spell with Leicester City from January onwards this season.

He was always dubbed as a midfielder with fantastic potential and his short stint in England has proven just that.

With three goals and five assists in just 13 Premier League matches, Tielemans was one of the star signings of the season, despite spending a matter of months in a Leicester shirt.

As a younger player at the age of 22, the Belgium prodigy would fit very nicely into Man City’s midfield, seeing as he already has the resounding qualities that could make him a success at the Etihad.

£40 million is how much Tielemans could cost (also per The Sun), nothing that would unsettle City’s enormous budget, so a deal should seriously be considered.

Do you think Youri Tielemans is what Man City need? Can he cut it amid their ridiculously talented engine room? Discuss in the comments down below!

Helder Costa can help turn Wolves career around by joining Leeds on loan

[ad_pod ]

According to Express & Star, Leeds are wanting to take Wolves man Helder Costa on loan ahead of the new Championship season.

What’s the word?

Wolves aren’t particularly full of depth, using just 21 players in the Premier League last term. One of which was Helder Costa who struggled somewhat in terms of his performance.

As a result, Nuno Santo may be willing to sanction a loan deal for the forward. Back in May, The Mirror claimed that the 25-year-old would be made surplus to requirements.

However, he could now be heading out on loan, rather than making a permanent switch elsewhere.

Express & Star have reported that Leeds want to take the Portuguese on a temporary deal as they prepare for another promotion charge next term.

Turnaround on the cards?

Costa is a fine Championship player, having notched double figures in terms of goal contributions in each of his two campaigns in the second tier.

In 2016/17 he found the back of the net ten times whilst laying on eight goals for his teammates. The following season was followed up by five strikes and a further six assists.

However, he’s found life in the Premier League tough. After starting matches on a regular basis until the end of November, he was then forced out of the team by a resurgent Diogo Jota, something that coincided with Nuno switching his formation to a 3-5-2.

Since then Costa has been a neglected figure, starting in just two league fixtures.

Having scored just once all season a loan spell could be exactly what he needs to rediscover his confidence and stage a turnaround.

Costa was once one of the leading lights in the Wolves team and as he approaches the prime years of his career, it’s vitally important he’s playing regularly.

Gareth Bale to Wolves? Wolves Fan TV discuss how ambitious Nuno Espirito Santo will be this summer in the video below…

On his day, the winger is an extremely canny operator, capable of providing a threat against most backlines. He’s found that difficult with limited game time, though.

As a result, a potential loan move to Leeds could be best for all parties. Costa’s contract doesn’t expire until 2021 so there’s still plenty of time for him to make it at Wolves.

Comparing Jurgen Klopp’s time at Liverpool with his spells at Dortmund and Mainz

[ad_pod ]

There are a few glaring similarities when it comes to Jurgen Klopp’s stints at Mainz 05 and Borussia Dortmund.

The charismatic German spent seven years at both clubs, before deciding to resign from both roles.

At Mainz, Klopp served as a player before taking the reins as manager, where he oversaw an excellent campaign that led to the club’s promotion to the Bundesliga in 2004. The German side remained in the top-flight under Klopp until 2007 when they were ultimately relegated.

Klopp stayed on despite this, but after failing to guide them to an immediate return, he resigned the following season and signalled an end to his seven-year stay in doing so – he departed as the club’s longest serving manager.

You can relive Liverpool’s Champions League celebrations in glorious 2D thanks to the guys at 442oons in the video below…

In 2008, the charismatic boss was appointed as manager of Borussia Dortmund, where he led a sleeping giant to the Bundesliga title in 2011 and the DFB-Pokal – Klopp also won the DFL-Supercup and successfully wrestled German football back from a dominant Bayern Munich side.

Despite this, things went slightly array in the 2014/15 and Dortmund finished the campaign in seventh place, having spent the majority of the season languishing in the bottom half – Klopp announced his departure in April that same term.

It is intriguing to see that, in both instances, things ended badly on a footballing front for Klopp with both teams.

Liverpool supporters will feel on cloud nine right now and will probably tell you that they’d want to tie the German down to a lifetime contract, but Mainz and Dortmund fans would’ve said the same thing at a similar stage of their time with Klopp.

The seven-year aspect of Klopp’s previous stints is interesting.

He seems to build up a rock solid relationship with his players and the supporters, and could very easily have spent longer if he wanted to; it should be noted that he has always left on his own terms.

News of a potential sabbatical from football in 2022 for Klopp has been doing the rounds, which if it were to materialise, would mean that Klopp would also be leaving Liverpool seven years on from his appointment in 2015.

Very interesting. Having said that, there are a number of reasons why things will be different at Anfield, rather than his tenure ending on another damp note.

At Mainz, his team were relegation fodder with every chance that the best players would be poached, whilst there would always be a desire from someone as ambitious as Klopp to push on and achieve something bigger.

At Dortmund, Bayern Munich were the team in Germany – if they came calling, it would be an extremely rare case for a player to say no. That was where most of Germany’s national team players plied their trade, and just the place to be in general.

That left Klopp always up against it. His chances of success were twice dented when Bayern nabbed wonderkid Mario Gotze from under his nose, before snatching his talismanic No.9 Robert Lewandowski on a free transfer.

At Liverpool, that simply wouldn’t ever happen.

English football is vastly different. There is no Bayern Munich-type club. There’s no Real Madrid, no Barcelona, no Juventus. The likes of Crystal Palace can sit comfortably and tell the big hitters: “We don’t need to sell, and we’re not going to.”

Although there is always the prospect of Real Madrid or Barcelona swooping, Liverpool certainly are in no danger of losing their best players to a big domestic rival, which often leads to a significant shift in power and creates ill-feeling amongst supporters.

Whilst there are similarities, there are also plenty of differences to Klopp’s current job in comparison to his former roles. Liverpool certainly aren’t under the same pressures as Mainz and while the Premier League remains ultra competitive at the top, it does feel as though this Reds team will be challenging for the next few seasons. Even then, the chances of them slipping into seventh like Dortmund did, amid this era of Big Six dominance, are exceptionally slim.

Perhaps it’s just a case of unlucky number seven for Klopp, but there’s reason to hope he’ll stay a little longer on Merseyside.

Jog on! West Ham fans react to Issa Diop to Man Utd transfer rumours

[ad_pod ]

Lots of West Ham fans have taken to Twitter to respond after Sky Sports reported that Issa Diop is on Manchester United’s radar.

According to the report, the Red Devils are prepared to offer £45m plus a player in order to land the 22-year-old centre-back, who the Hammers signed just last summer in a £22m deal.

West Ham ruined Arsenal’s unbeaten record at the Emirates in 2007 and history repeated itself at the weekend. Spurs fans don’t take it well in the video below…

The Frenchman starred for the Irons last term and made 38 appearances across all competitions, scoring two goals.

Football.london’s West Ham correspondent Sam Inkersole revealed that the east Londoners will not entertain any talk of a Diop exit – it would certainly take a lot to bring the young defender to Old Trafford given how impressively he performed last term.

Former United boss Jose Mourinho singled out the former Toulouse man for praise when his side lost 3-1 to West Ham last season, so Diop is a player who United fans will already have witnessed the full force of.

Let’s see how the West Ham fans on Twitter responded to the transfer talk…
