Aston Villa: Fans react to Martinez update

Many Aston Villa fans are reacting to a tweet which reports on what goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez did following the 3-1 loss to West Ham on Wednesday.

Jesse Lingard scored a brace on his Hammers debut during the match. Both of his goals however were ones which Martinez will probably feel he should have saved, as he managed to get his hands on the ball both times

According to @greggevans and tweeted out by @villareport, the Argentinian goalkeeper called on a few of the forwards for additional time on the training pitch this week. This was due to the fact that he wasn’t happy with his performance in the defeat to West Ham. One fan called him a ‘great professional’ after hearing the news.

Martinez has probably won a lot of points for Villa this campaign, but he was right to not be happy with his performance in that particular match. Clearly, the extra training worked wonders as he put in a solid performance in the 1-0 victory against Arsenal on Saturday.

Here is what fans said following the news:

Ralf Rangnick could revolutionise Celtic

In recent months, a whole host of managers have been tipped to replace Neil Lennon at Celtic.

The Northern Irishman has endured a torrid season at Parkhead, one that sees his team sit a massive 23 points behind Rangers in their quest for the SPFL crown.

They were dumped out of both the Champions League and Europa League while they have shipped goals at will. They have conceded 13 more than the Gers despite playing two fewer matches.

Eddie Howe was one of the first names to be put on Celtic’s radar but Frank Lampard and Rafa Benitez have also been touted.

Though, we want to focus on a man first discussed in the same breath as the Hoops back in November. That happens to be 62-year-old Ralf Rangnick.

Some Celtic supporters have been crying out for the German to replace Lennon and after he rejected the chance to manage Chelsea, he is still available on the managerial market.

Commentator Derek Rae revealed last year that for the Bhoys to get him, it would have to be a project that really interests him, one that allows the coach to do things his way.

At first glance, this doesn’t put Celtic in a good spot. After all, Nick Hammond does the recruitment while Peter Lawwell and Dermot Desmond make all the decisions at the highest level.

However, if Desmond can lure Rangnick to Parkhead, he could completely revolutionise Celtic. The things he achieved and introduced at RB Leipzig were incredible, but it all spurned from his early days in management.

In the 1990s, the German earned the tag of a “professor.” Take a look at football now and you’ll notice that a host of teams play with a high press. Think Manchester City, Liverpool or even Leeds and Southampton in the Premier League – they all play with that system.

The method of winning the ball back within eight seconds of losing it has become paramount. Though, the ideology behind that was pioneered by Rangnick.

“Five or 10 years ago, you were not afraid of what the other team was doing while you had the ball. Now, most teams in most leagues have some sort of plan for how they can hurt you when they do not have possession,” the veteran coach once documented.

Though not only was he a pioneer on the field, but he also brought in revolutionary methods off it. At Leipzig, he became what German reporter Guido Schafer describes as an “architect.”

He determined the way he wanted Leipzig to play – with a high press – and then set upon signing players to fulfil those needs. Remarkably, every player he wanted to sign was under the age of 23. Rangnick discovered the likes of Naby Keita and Timo Werner, players who quickly became stars in the Bundesliga.

But his eye-catching methods didn’t stop there. He expected players to arrive at training 90 minutes early in order to undergo saliva and blood tests. As a result, he was able to work out how hard his squad would be able to train. They would also test gluten and lactose and consequently tailor diets to each individual’s requirements. He also brought in a sleep coach.

Rangnick is the definition of meticulous and if Desmond could bring him to Celtic, the very face of the football club could change.

He is a pioneer of football and if anyone can revive the Glaswegians, it’s him. He seemed to know exactly what was required in order to take Leipzig up the football pyramid.

Celtic have long failed to capitalise on their dominance and really make a statement in European football. Getting rid of Lennon and hiring Rangnick could finally change that.

AND in other news, £3m Celtic gem could become a star if Desmond hires 42 y/o with “amazing” connections…

Alioski was disappointing vs Arsenal

Leeds were handed a defeat in the Premier League last night at the hands of a merciless Arsenal side. The struggling Gunners were 3-0 up before half-time even struck, thanks to a Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang brace and a strike from Hector Bellerin.

Aubameyang struck again in the second half, just two minutes after the restart but Leeds shifted up a gear in a desperate attempt to claw something back.

Pascal Struijk and Helder Costa found the back of the net but it was only enough to half the deficit. It was an overall disappointing performance from this Leeds side, with Illan Meslier receiving the brunt of the stick for letting four goals past him and conceding a spot-kick. One man who also heavily let the side down was Ezgjan Alioski.

Ezgjan Alioski vs Arsenal

Sofascore gave him a match rating of 5.9 which was the worst of any outfield player on the night, and when you look at some of his underlying numbers, it’s easy to see why. He made just 23 passes at an accuracy of 70% (only Klich fared worse), and was much lower than his 55 passes and 81% accuracy against Crystal Palace in the match prior.

He also failed to register a single block, interception or clearance and made just the one tackle, which isn’t good enough for a defender and significantly lower than his season average.

This campaign, Alioski has averaged two tackles per match in the Premier League, while he also has come up with 0.7 interceptions and one clearance per match too.

And that’s not all. As a full-back, the revolutionised role sees them contribute heavily to the attack as well as the defence. Alioski contributed two key passes and completed 100% of his crosses in the 2-0 win over Palace, but in his performance against Arsenal, he failed to put in a single cross and managed just one key pass.

Leeds have now slipped into 11th place after Arsenal leapfrog them and go two points ahead. For Alioski, his position at the club hangs in the balance. Talks have swirled around a potential exit for the £55,000 per week left-back as he finds himself linked to Galatasaray on a permanent contract.

Poor performances will only further nudge the North Macedonian out the door and force Marcelo Bielsa to bench him in favour of other personnel.

One of the big talking points ahead of the game was about Alioski coming up against Nicolas Pepe following the Ivorian’s sending off in the reverse clash at Elland Road earlier in the season, with Patrick Bamford openly revealing his teammate was looking forward to Sunday’s game.

Pepe of course didn’t come on, but Alioski’s awful performance will certainly not have made Bielsa happy. Bukayo Saka ran rings around him with his pace and movement, making seven dribbles and winning five fouls, both of which were game-highs.

Leeds’ full-back struggled to cope, and it was no surprise that Saka won his side a penalty (that was overturned by VAR) with a darting run infield that Liam Cooper had to come across to deal with because Alioski didn’t.

Meslier may take the headlines for his gaffe in the build-up to Arsenal’s legitimate spot-kick, but Alioski hardly covered himself in glory either, and Bielsa will be surely disappointed with him.

Leeds: Hay discusses Raphinha

Leeds United star Raphinha has had a solid debut season in the Premier League and it has not gone unnoticed, with clubs like Liverpool monitoring the winger. Phil Hay has provided an insight on his contract and discussed his arrival at Elland Road.

Hay discusses Raphinha

In a recent Q&A on The Athletic, via MOT Leeds News, one fan asked: “Do you know if Raphinha has a sell-on clause in his contract? Or a buy out clause? It seems ludicrous that Rennes have sold him for that price to us.”

Hay responded to this query, saying, “There are clauses in it. It was £17m plus add-ons but I’m not aware of a buy-out clause. You’re right about Rennes. I can’t understand their thinking at all. They seemed happy to take what they could get for him and essentially cover the cost of what they paid to Sporting CP. Very odd.”

Leeds have found a gem in Raphinha

Earlier this season, Hay waxed lyrical about the Brazilian, tweeting: ‘Raphinha btw. Seventeen million squids. Bargain.’ It is easy to see why he said this – in his 21 league appearances (including three from the bench), the 24-year-old has picked up five goals and five assists (Transfermarkt), a fantastic return for a relatively young player in a new league with a promoted team.

Journalist Henry Winter also waxed lyrical about the Leeds ace, saying: ‘Raphinha one of the stars of the season, one of the buys of the season’.

His underlying attacking stats show that he is unlucky not to have more goals, too, as he has managed 2.3 shots, 2.1 key passes and 1.7 successful dribbles per game (WhoScored) – stats which rank him highly among his teammates (he is second for shots and right at the top for key passes and dribbles among Leeds’ squad).

With all this taken into account, it is easy to see why Hay believes the club got a great deal for the Brazilian and the club need to do everything to hold onto Raphinha as he looks to be a good talent and has the potential to become even better in the near future.

Wolves: The stats behind Jonny’s poor game

Wolves’ defeat to Manchester City was hardly a shock. Nuno Santo’s men haven’t been their normal selves this term while City have been ahead of the pack in the Premier League by quite some distance.

Though, if it wasn’t for defensive errors then they’d have stood a chance of nicking a point on Tuesday.

Ki-Jana Hoever was given a horrendous night by Raheem Sterling and was then caught out by Kyle Walker for the hosts’ second goal. Leander Dendoncker, meanwhile, scored an unfortunate own goal to open the proceedings.

However, the ever-reliable Jonny also had a night to forget at the Etihad. The Spaniard’s return to fitness last month was a welcome boost to Wolves’ chances but he has played just one set of 90 minutes since coming back.

Clearly, he is not up to full speed and that was all too evident when they travelled to Manchester. Dealing with Riyad Mahrez is difficult on an ordinary day but when you’re not quite up to fitness yet, it was always going to be difficult.

The Algerian spun a web down the channel for City, catching Jonny out with his run for the opening goal. It was lapse defending from the left wing back who was anonymous going forward and ineffective in defence.

He made just one tackle as Mahrez delivered a mighty ten crosses and three key passes. The dazzling winger was also successful with five dribbles; all from Jonny’s side of the pitch.

With that in mind, it was unsurprising that he was hooked after just 52 minutes on the clock. In that time, he made only eight passes of the football, the lowest tally of anyone to start the match.

Furthermore, he also managed just 14 touches of the ball. That happened to be a lower number than not only goalkeeper Rui Patricio but also substitute Fabio Silva.

This was an incredibly poor night for Jonny. That being said, it’s important not to count this as a proper litmus of his abilities. The 26-year-old has been an extremely capable performer since signing from Celta Vigo; Nuno now just needs to get him fully fit again.

Crystal Palace: Fans discuss Chris Wilder

Several Crystal Palace fans have been discussing the possibility of Chris Wilder taking over from Roy Hodgson on social media.

That’s because of reports on Friday morning, suggesting Wilder is set to be sacked by Sheffield United. The Times’ Matt Lawton was one of the first to break the news just over 48 hours before the Blades’ trip to Leicester City. Sky Sports later confirmed that the 53-year-old has left the Yorkshire club.

Wilder made the move to Bramall Lane from Northampton Town in 2016 and led them from League One to the Premier League during that time.

It seems as if relegation back to the Championship is a formality, though, with United 13 points adrift of safety with 10 games of the season remaining.

The 53-year-old has taken charge of 227 matches with the Blades, averaging 1.59 points per game during that time.

With the news circulating rapidly, these Palace fans all shared their views on Wilder on Twitter, with many split on whether or not he would be a good option to potentially replace the sometimes-maligned Hodgson.

Arsenal fans slam Luiz vs Olympiacos

Many Arsenal fans were left to slam the performance of David Luiz despite their 3-1 away win at Olympiacos in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday night.

A first goal for Mikel Arteta’s team from Martin Odegaard, supplemented with further strikes from Gabriel and Mohamed Elneny, ensured that the Gunners will go into the second leg at the Emirates Stadium as firm favourites to go through to the quarter-final stage.

However, it was not as easy as the 3-1 scoreline suggests, with the north London club often creating their own downfall once again, with the most notable error coming from both Bernd Leno and Dani Ceballos in the lead-up to the goal scored by Youssef El Arabi.

Luiz was not immune to mistakes, either, as he made a big one in the first half which may well have cost his side.

The former Chelsea man did not have the best of nights by his standards in general, losing possession of the ball no fewer than nine times in total while also failing to make a single interception, earning him a quite measly 6.5 overall rating on Sofascore, the lowest out of any outfield Arsenal player to have started the game.

Arsenal fan reaction to Luiz display

These Gooners slammed his performance on Twitter, with one fan even going as far as to claim that the Brazilian defender is ‘useless’ and other saying he should ‘never play for us again’:

“David Luiz, Odegaard, Leno and Ceballos were poor last night. Arteta needs to fix this before the NLD on Sunday. #OLYARS #UEL”

Sheffield Wednesday: Harris endures nightmre

Sheffield Wednesday ended a run of seven straight defeats but still slipped ever closer towards League One after throwing away two points at Hillsborough against their local rivals last night.

Darren Moore’s side are cut nine points adrift of safety following the 1-1 draw with only ten games left to play. An unfortunate Callum Paterson own goal cancelled out Josh Windass’ equaliser.

It’s clear that the 46-year-old still does not know his best starting XI – or formation – but plenty of the current squad are doing him no favours. At times, they looked too vulnerable to overcommit and ultimately, shot of confidence.

As outlined by YorkshireLive reporter Dom Howson, Wednesday’s struggles in front of goal continued against Huddersfield, managing only two shots on target. He also claims that their expected goals record since Moore was appointed is yet to improve either.

Moore deployed a 3-4-3 formation with Windass and Kadeem Harris playing either side of Jordan Rhodes. Only two of the trio surpassed a rating of 7.0 as per SofaScore.

The one that didn’t was Harris – the natural winger. In fact, he had a complete nightmare of an evening on that right flank before being hooked on the hour mark.

His 6.5 rating was the lowest of any Owls player, and it’s easy to see why.

The 27-year-old dynamo, valued at £1.35m by Transfermarkt, recorded the fewest touches (26) of any Wednesday starter which goes to show just how ineffective and incapable he was of making an impact in the game. Even Keiren Westwood had more between the sticks (45). That’s never a good sign.

Harris made 58 touches against the league leaders on Sunday, in a game they weren’t expected to do well in whatsoever.

With so few touches, the former Cardiff ace struggled immensely, failing to deliver an accurate cross to Rhodes whilst he was hugely wasteful with three of his shots failing to find the target with one of those attempts being a big chance missed, via SofaScore.

The 5 foot 9 dynamo also lost possession seven times, meaning one in 3.7 touches were merely him giving the ball back to the Terriers, whilst he won just four of seven duels, proving to be lightweight up against his opposite number.

Howson graded Harris among his worst performers in his post-match ratings column, and said: ‘Another frustrating evening. Carried the ball forward but there was no end product to his forward thrusts. Looked disappointed to come off after the break.’

All in all, it was a complete disasterclass from the £10k-per-week Owls man in front of a manager he needs to impress, one that is also still searching for his right team.

On that basis alone, Harris may not be given another opportunity.

Pundit expects Celtic exit for Ntcham

Former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie has exclusively told Football FanCast that he expects Olivier Ntcham to be moved on this summer.

The French midfielder, whose contract with the Hoops expires this summer, is currently enduring a miserable loan spell with Ligue 1 outfit Marseille following on from his struggles at Celtic earlier this season.

Ntcham has been a regular in the side since arrival from Serie A outfit Genoa almost four years ago, but was restricted to just seven Scottish Premiership starts prior to his loan move back to France, which led to former Bhoys boss Neil Lennon saying he lacked “passion” for the Scottish game.

But just one day after Ntcham signed, Marseille and former Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas was sacked, meaning the midfielder’s struggles have continued, making just five appearances in all competitions and was hauled off at half-time during their defeat to Nice on Saturday.

Once Ntcham returns from his stint in France, his deal with Celtic will be almost up, meaning he could therefore become a free agent.

And that’s exactly what McAvennie, who wasn’t impressed with his switch to Marseille in the first place, expects to happen at the end of the season.

He told Football FanCast: “It’s a move that I wouldn’t have taken. Before they even got there it caused so much bother with the manager leaving and saying he didn’t want him. I would have walked off the plane and said I’m not going.

“I think the boy is a wonderful talent, I thought he was tailor-made to take Scott Brown’s place, but that’s not to be.

“He has got to come back, but I would imagine Celtic would want to move him on. We don’t know who the manager is. If it’s John Kennedy he will be moved on, if it’s a new manager he might think he’s got something. If it was me I’d keep him, but realistically he’s going to be moved on I would say.”

Liverpool’s Keita sees rating plummet

Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita has not had the best time of things since arriving at Anfield from RB Leipzig.

Brought to the club by Jurgen Klopp officially in the summer of 2018, the Guinean penned a five-year contract for a fee of approximately £48m.

His arrival looked a steal for the Reds, with Keita having harnessed a reputation as one of the most exciting midfielders in Europe with the German outfit. It certainly looked as though Michael Edwards had pulled off another masterstroke in the transfer market.

However, it has not panned out the way he or the club will have envisaged, with the 26-year-old’s transfer rating taking a nose-dive from its peak of £58.5m all the way down to his current valuation of £34.2m.

Even during Liverpool’s glorious 2019/20 campaign, his value dropped habitually, only plateauing in July of 2020.

It is the result of an inconsistent few years on Merseyside for Keita.

Since his arrival, he has started just 42 out of a possible 151 matches in all competitions for the Reds, that being down to a combination of poor form and consistent injury problems.

As it stands, should Liverpool have all of their midfielders fit and available, it is likely that he ranks below the likes of Fabinho, Thiago Alcantara, Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum in the pecking order at Anfield.

In all of his time with Liverpool, Keita has also scored just seven goals and notched four assists in all competitions. For context, he scored nine goals and contributed seven assists in his final season at the Red Bull Arena – indicating his huge drop-off at Anfield.

Despite Liverpool colossus Virgil van Dijk labelling the Guinean midfielder as “world class” prior to the 2020/21 season, Keita is yet to really show that with Liverpool, an aspect that has contributed to the dramatic decrease in his transfer valuation.

He and manager Klopp will certainly be hoping that his time with the club takes on somewhat of a more positive outlook in the next few seasons.
